Tips of Identifying USB Port Types

IntroductionUSB is very common, because it is indispensable for data transmission and charging. In modern life, we can see one or more USB ports on desktop computers, laptops, TVs, game devices, cars, media players, phones, and other electric devices, etc. USB devices are very important for our life. Look at your computer or smart phones, we probably know what it used for, however, fewer people know the full name of USB and what the real meanings of USB protocols and USB types.USB Ports, Cables, Types, & ConnectorsCatalogIntroductionⅠ Figure USB Ports and Standards OutⅡ USB Port Colors MeaningⅢ USB-C vs Type CⅣ USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0Ⅴ According to Labels Behind USB PortsHere are some easy steps to identify USB ports with different standards.Ⅰ Figure USB Ports and Standards OutUSB (universal serial bus) aims for input and output interfaces standard. It is widely used in information transformation products such as personal computers and mobile devices. The USB interface has hot-swappable, plug-and-play functions, and can be connected to a variety of external devices, such as a mouse and keyboard, etc. Our mobile phone charging uses the USB connector. These USB devices give us great convenience. USB chargers, USB connectors, USB hub, USB ports and USB cables, are all USB the same? What is USB 2.0 and USB 3.0? Low speed, full speed, and high speed mean what? What are Type-A, Type-B, and Type-C? Here you will get a full answer.Versions of USBThe USB 1.0/2.0/3.0 we often say refers to the technical specifications. The biggest difference among them is speed, that is, they indicate the speed of USB transfer files. The maximum transmission bandwidth of USB 3.0 is up to 5.0Gbps (640MB/s). Now many high-speed U disks or hard drives of portable electric devices use USB 3.0 or USB 3.1. USB also includes the old USB 1.1 standard and  USB 2.0 standard. The traditional maximum transfer rate of USB 1.1 is 12Mbps. Generally, manufacturers call its products that comply with the USB 1.1 standard as "full-speed USB." When the high-speed USB 2.0 was first introduced, the highest transmission rate was only 240Mbps. Later, the USB Promoter Group increased the rate to 480Mbps in October 1999, which is 40 times faster than the traditional USB 1.1. USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB 1.1. Of course, USB 1.1 devices are "upward compatible" with USB 2.0, but they cannot reach the transmission speed of USB 2.0 and automatically stay at low speed. The maximum length of the USB 2.0 cable is 5 meters, but if five USB adapters are used, the maximum length can be up to 30 meters.Although you'll still be able to connect old-school devices with USB Type-A or USB Type-B connectors, but now you have more choices, that is USB4. USB4 is a USB system specified in the USB4 specification which was released in version 1.0 on 29 August 2019 by USB Implementers Forum. It leverages the Thunderbolt 3 protocol to deliver speeds up to twice as fast as the USB version it replaces. The USB4 architecture defines a method to dynamically share a single high-speed link with multiple end device types to best serve the transfer of data by type and application. USB-A, USB-B, and USB-C Port Types-Which is faster?Type-A/B/C determines the appearance of the USB ports. For example, the mouse, keyboard, USB flash drive and other interfaces we use are generally Type-A, which is also the most widely used interface. Type-B is more common in printers, monitors and other devices. In the past, Micro USB and Mini USB commonly used in mobile phones were portable versions of USB 2.0. The appearance of Type-C is very recognizable, slimmer. Its biggest feature is flippability, that is, USB-C connector has no up or down orientation, so you never have to flip it over to plug it in.1) Type-A: Standard USB PortType-A is the most common types of USB ports on computers. It has a notable feature: direction requirements. The connector (male port) must be inserted into the interface (female port) from a certain direction, in addition, because the appearance of the two sides of the USB male port is very close, this insertion process often makes mistakes.2) Type-B: Commonly used in printer equipmentType-B is the most common and popular data interface type on printers and displays, and some displays will also use it.3) Type Micro-B: USB standard for mobile devicesCurrently, most Android phones use the Micro USB interface (USB Micro-B), which is still widely used in various mobile portable devices.4) Type-C: It will become mainstreamAlthough Type-C has just appeared, it is foreseeable that as the USB Type-C technology matures, various notebooks, tablets and even smart phones in the future will begin to use the USB Type-C interface. Ⅱ USB Port Colors MeaningColorUSB ConnectorUSB Speed StandardNoteWhiteUSB-A or USB-B  Micro USB-AUSB 1.0 or USB 1.1*BlackUSB-A or USB-B Micro USB-BUSB 2.0 Hi-Speed*BlueUSB-A or USB-BUSB 3.0 Super Speed*RedSleep-and-Charge USB-AUSB 3.1 Gen 2 USB 3.2Usually denotes an "always on" portYellowSleep-and-Charge USB-AUSB 2.0 or USB 3.0Higher power or "always on" portⅢ USB-C vsType CThe Type-C is the same as the USB C, because the USB C is also called USB Type-C. However, there are slight differences between them. Let’s look at the following facts.Features of USB-C Connector:1. Ultra-thinThe old USB port size is 14mm * 6.5mm, while the USB-C is only 8.4mm * 2.6mm.2. No OrientationLike the Lightning, there will be no problem regardless of whether it is plugged in or reversed. It claims to be able to up to 10,000 times of repeated plugging and unplugging.3. Fast Transfer RateThe maximum transfer rate of the USB-C port is 10Gb per second, which is much faster than USB 3.0.4. Two-way TransmissionUnlike the old USB port, the power can only be transmitted in one direction. The USB-C port is bidirectional, so it can have two transmission power ways. Therefore, users can not only use laptops to charge mobile devices, but also use other devices or mobile power sources to charge laptops.5. Strong Power Supply CapabilityThe standard specification cable equipped with Type-C connector can pass 3A current, and it also has a super USB power supply capacity, which can up to 100W of power.6. Backward CompatibilityUSB-C can be compatible with the old USB protocol, but users need an additional adapter.USB-C refers to the Type C port that uses the USB 3.1 standard, but it should be noted that USB-C is not equal to Type C. Because there are many Type C devices that can only reach USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 transfer rate. With the improvement of technology, Type-C also supports the USB3.1 standard. Because the voltage and current increase, the coding consumption is reduced, from 20% of USB 3.0 to 3%. In other words, users can quickly transfer data and video through Type-C, or charge faster. Also users can charge other devices with their mobile phones. As for the display, when using Type-C for data transmission, there is no need to use another power cord to power the display, which solves the problem of messy desktop cables. Even the relatively high-end HDMI and DP ports cannot do it.The USB-C connector can be expanded into three: power supply/ USB transmission/ VGA or HDMI, which is the next-generation mainstream USB interface. The type-c cable is also of great help to the arrival of the 5G. Because the port of it becomes smaller, the flattening of electronic products is promoted. And in the transmission of audio and video, the tc data line has faster speed. At present, well-known technology manufacturers such as Sony and Apple have widely used type-c cables on their electrical devices because they can support multiple formats and reduce the limitations of USB. In short, the arrival of the 5G actually wants everyone to experience faster bandwidth, so the corresponding supporting facilities should also keep up. The type-c cable is undoubtedly one of them. Ⅳ USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0Although USB has developed to the USB3.1 protocol, we often see two types of USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 on devices. How do we distinguish these two interface types in daily use? Some people will say that USB 3.0 port is blue and USB2.0 port is black, which is easy to distinguish. In fact, it is not. Even though most USB3.0 ports use blue, there are many special cases. Here are some examples. The color of the USB ports on some models does not have any special treatment, and it looks no different from USB 2.0 type, and it is all black. However, it is often marked with "SS" in front of the logo. "SS" is the abbreviation of "SuperSpeed USB", which means connector or port that uses the USB 3.0 standard. The black USB type is also suitable for USB 3.0. The USB ports in Apple's new MacBook notebooks are all USB 3.0 standard, but in order to keep in harmony with the color of the computer cover, a white connector design is adopted. The USB ports on the Razer gaming notebooks are also USB 3.0, but in order to match the bright green keyboard backlight on the body and the Razer logo, the color of the USB port adopts "green". It improves the recognition of the machine and the brand, because no third-party manufacturer has adopted a green USB interface design. In addition, distinguish the metal pins of the USB ports. Generally, USB 2.0 uses a row of 4 pins, while USB 3.0 has a two-row pin design, with 5 pins in the front row and 4 pins in the back row. In addition, there is also a hybrid port of eSATA and USB 2.0, which can plug in both USB devices and eSATA interface devices. However, they are common in business models of previous years. Ⅴ According to Labels Behind USB Ports"+" sign - It represents the USB interface with high current output capability. The ordinary USB interface provides a maximum current of 500mA, but it may not be able to drive when encountering "high energy consumption" devices such as mobile hard disks and USB optical drives. Therefore, when it appeared, the output current on this interface can reach 1000mA (1A), which greatly enhances the drive capability."SS" - It is actually a symbol of USB 3.0. If the USB port has “SS” (or “SuperSpeed”) on its label, it’s a USB 3.0 port. If it’s“SS 10”, it’s a USB 3.1 port."Lightning Logo" -It generally appears on notebooks, and the USB port with it has a power-off charging function. That is, it can use its own battery or an external power supply to charge the mobile device when it is turned off. The lightning mark with an arrow indicates the Thunderbolt 3: two-way charging and two-way data transmission. Thunderbolt 3 supports for up to 40Gbps of throughput, alongside reduced power consumption and the ability to move as much as 100 watts of power over the interface. And it also means that a single cable is all you need to push power and transfer a large amount of information (up to and including video data for two 60Hz 4K displays) to and from even a complex device like a computer, something many laptop manufacturers have been quick to take advantage of.USB is an important interface on the computer. Almost 90% of the external devices are connected by it for mobile hard drives, such as U disks, printers, etc. Understanding the above information can analyze and solve the most common problems of unrecognized external devices of USB. At the same time, it is also very useful for us to choose USB products. Ⅵ Frequently Asked Questions about USB Types and USB Versions1. Basically, oscillators transform unidirectional current flow from a DC source into an alternating waveform that, as determined by its circuit components, is of the desired frequency. By observing the behavior of the LC tank circuit shown in Figure 1 below, which uses an inductor L and a completely pre-charged capacitor C as its components, the basic theory behind the operation of oscillators can be understood. In this case, the capacitor initially begins discharging through the inductor, which results in the conversion of its electrical energy into an electromagnetic field that can be stored in the inductor. There will be no current flow in the circuit until the capacitor discharges fully. The stored electromagnetic field, however, would have created a back-emf by then, which results in the flow of current through the circuit in the same direction as before. This flow of current through the circuit continues until the electromagnetic field collapses, resulting in the electromagnetic energy back-conversion into electrical form, allowing the cycle to repeat. Now, however, the capacitor would have been charged with the opposite polarity, because of which an oscillating waveform is obtained as the output. However, because of the resistance of the circuit, the oscillations that occur due to the inter-conversion between the two energy-forms will not continue indefinitely as they will be subject to the impact of energy loss. The amplitude of these oscillations gradually decreases to zero as a result, making them damp. This means that the energy loss needs to be balanced to achieve continuous oscillations and constant amplitude. However, in order to achieve oscillations of constant amplitude, it should be noted that the energy supplied should be precisely regulated and must be equal to that of the energy lost.Ⅱ Definition of Voltage Controlled OscillatorA voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is an output signal oscillator whose output can be varied over a particular frequency range that is controlled by the DC voltage input. It is an oscillator whose output frequency is directly connected by its input to the voltage applied (FM control).A main parameter of the VCO is the sweeping time: this is the minimum time required to turn or sweep from minimum frequency to maximum frequency or reverse. From an external analog signal, the VCO can be modulated by amplitude (AM). To produce the requested RF power level, an external power amplifier may be required.Ⅲ Types of Voltage Controlled OscillatorThe VCOs can be categorized based on the output waveform:• Harmonic Oscillators• Relaxation Oscillators3.1 Harmonic OscillatorsThe output waveform that harmonic oscillators generate is sinusoidal. This can also apply to the oscillator that regulates the linear voltage. The LC and Crystal oscillators are examples. Here, the capacitance of the diode varies according to the voltage around the diode. This in turn alters the LC circuit's capacitance. Hence, the frequency of the output will change. The advantages are frequency stability in terms of power supply, noise and temperature, and frequency control precision. The only downside is that this form of the oscillator on monolithic ICs can not be implemented effortlessly.3.2 Relaxation OscillatorsThe waveform output produced by harmonic oscillators is a screwed tooth. Using the decreased amount of components, this type may provide a wide range of frequency. It can primarily be used in ICs that are monolithic. The oscillators for relaxation may have the following topologies: • Delay-based ring VCOs • Grounded capacitor VCOs • Emitter-coupled VCOs Here: In delay-based ring VCOs, in a ring shape, the gain stages are connected. As the name implies, in every single point, the frequency is connected to the delay. The VCOs of the second and third types act almost equally. The time taken in each stage is directly linked to the capacitor's charging and discharging time.Ⅳ Working Principle of Voltage Controlled Oscillator Using several voltage regulation electronic components such as varactor diodes, transistors, Op-amps, etc., VCO circuits can be built Here, using Op-amps, we are going to address the function of a VCO. Below, the circuit diagram is shown.A square wave is going to be the output waveform of this VCO. The output frequency is, as we know, connected to the control voltage. The first Op-amp will act as an integrator inside this circuit. The arrangement of the voltage divider is applied here. Because of this, half of the control voltage given as input is supplied to the Op-amp 1 positive terminal. At the negative terminal, the same voltage level is retained. This is to maintain the voltage drop, R1 as half of the control voltage, across the resistor. The current flowing from the R1 resistor passes through the MOSFET when the MOSFET is in good condition. The R2 has half of the resistance, the same drop in voltage and twice the current as of the R1's. So, the attached capacitor is charged by the extra current. To supply this current, the Op-amp 1 should have a gradually increasing output voltage. The current flowing from the R1 resistor passes through the capacitor and gets discharged when the MOSFET is out of order. The output voltage obtained at this time from the Op-amp 1 will decrease. A triangular waveform is therefore produced as the output of Op-amp 1. The Op-amp 2 will act as a catalyst for Schmitt. A triangular wave that is the output of the Op-amp 1 is the input to this Op-amp. If the input voltage is greater than the threshold level, VCC will be the output from the Op-amp 2. If the input voltage is lower than the threshold level, the Op-amp 2 output is zero. The output of the Op-amp 2 is therefore going to be square waves. LM566 IC or IC 566 is an instance of VCO. In fact, it is an integrated 8-pin circuit that can generate double-square wave and triangular wave outputs. Below, the internal circuit is depicted.Ⅴ Voltage Controlled Oscillator RequirementsThere are several parameters that must be considered before the design begins when designing a voltage-regulated oscillator, VCO. These describe the parameters of key performance required for the VCO. 5.1 VCO tuning rangeIt is clear that the oscillator that is powered by voltage must be able to tune over the range that the loop is supposed to work over. This requirement is not always simple to satisfy and, in certain extreme situations, can require the VCO or resonant circuit to be switched. 5.2 VCO tuning gainThe gain of the oscillator regulated by voltage is important. It is calculated per Hz (or V/MHz, etc) in terms of volts. It is the tuning shift for a given change in voltage, as indicated by the units. Any of the overall loop design factors and measurements are influenced by the voltage-controlled oscillator gain.At lower frequencies, the VCO response curves can be shown to be relatively straight. They typically flatten out at higher voltages, however, where the capacitance changes from the variable diodes decrease. 5.3 VCO V/f slopeFor any voltage-driven oscillator used in a phase-locked loop, it is a crucial requirement that the voltage to frequency curve is monotonic, i.e. it always shifts in the same context, usually increasing voltage frequency. If ti alters, as can generally occur in some instances due to spurious resonances, etc., this can cause the loop to become unstable. This must therefore be avoided if the phase-locked loop is to work satisfactorily. This curve shows a slight dip which will result in an unstable phase-locked loop.Phase noise efficiency: In some PLL applications, the phase noise performance of the voltage regulated oscillator is of particular importance - particularly where it is used in frequency synthesizers. Outside of the PLL loop bandwidth, the phase noise output of the voltage-regulated oscillator is the dominant factor in phase noise. While the operation of the PLL reduces close-in noise, there is no reduction in VCO phase noise outside the loop bandwidth. These are some of the main specifications that must be understood from the outset of the VCO design. Careful optimization of the tuned circuit Q, especially the use of variable diodes with as high a Q as possible, selection of the active system, optimization of the oscillator feedback.Ⅵ Voltage Controlled Oscillator FeedbackA VCO can be considered, like any oscillator, as an amplifier and a feedback loop. It is possible to denote the amplifier's gain as A and the feedback as B. For the circuit to oscillate, 360 ° must be the complete phase shift around the loop and unity must be the gain. Signals are fed back around the loop in this manner so that they are addictive and, as a result, any slight disturbance in the loop is fed back and builds up. Because the feedback network is frequency-dependent, the signal is based on one frequency, the feedback network is resonant, and a single frequency signal is produced. A typical emitter circuit is used by many oscillators and thus by VCOs. This in itself generates a 180° phase shift, leaving a further 180° to be given by the feedback network. A typical base circuit where there is no phase shift between the emitter and collector signals (assuming a bipolar transistor is used) can be used by other oscillator or VCO circuits and the phase shift network must provide either 0 ° or 360 °. The device requires a resonant circuit for the oscillator to oscillate on a given frequency to ensure that the oscillation happens on a given frequency. The resonant circuit may be one of a variety of LC resonant circuit configurations, depending on the circuit, or a quartz crystal, etc., in either series or parallel resonance.Ⅶ Colpitts & Clapp Voltage Controlled Oscillator CircuitsThe Colpitts and Clapp oscillator circuits are two commonly used formats for the VCO. Of the two, the most commonly used is the Colpitts circuit, but both are somewhat similar in their configuration. These circuits serve as oscillators because an active device such as a bipolar transistor with capacitors positioned between the base and the emitter (C1) and the emitter and the ground (C2) has been found to fulfill the requirements needed to provide adequate feedback for the output of the oscillator in the correct step. The C1:C2 ratio must be greater than one for the oscillation to take place. The resonant circuit is rendered between the base and ground by adding an inductive function. This consists of only an inductor in the Colpitts circuit, while an inductor and capacitor in series are used in the Clapp circuit. The resonance conditions are that:The capacitance for the overall resonant circuit consists of a series of combinations of the two C1 and C2 series capacitors. The capacitor in the series with the inductor is also used in the series with C1 and C2 in the case of the Clapp oscillator. The capacitance of the series is thus:It is important to change the resonant point of the circuit to make the oscillator tune. This is better accomplished in the case of the Colpitts oscillator, by inserting a capacitor across the indicator. Alternatively, the capacitor may be in series with the inductor for the Clapp oscillator. A circuit where the inductive reactance is located between the base and ground is often favored for high-frequency applications because it is less vulnerable to spurious oscillations and other anomalies.Ⅷ Voltage Controlled Oscillator Varactor IssuesIn order to ensure that the drive frequency in the tuned circuit is not too high, caution must be taken in the design of the circuit when varactor diodes are used inside a voltage-driven oscillator. If this is the case, then the varactor diodes, reducing the Q and increasing the number of spurious signals, can be forced into forwarding conduction. Within a VCO, there are two main types of varactor diode that can be used-the name refers to the diode junction and this impacts their output.8.1 Abrupt: Abrupt diodes have a relatively sharp transition between the areas of the diode, as the name implies. They are able to give a higher Q than their hyper-abrupt relatives, while abrupt varactor diodes do not offer such a high tuning range or linear transfer characteristic. This results in a better oscillator phase noise output regulated by voltage. The other point to note is that in order to have the appropriate tuning range, abrupt varactor diodes may need a high tuning voltage, as certain diodes may need a tuning voltage for the VCO to differ up to 50 volts or slightly more. This can cause problems with supplying the drive circuits with a voltage supply with a sufficiently high voltage.8.2 Hyper-abrupt: There is a relatively linear voltage for hyper-abrupt diodes: the capacitance curve. As a consequence, in some applications, they give a very linear tuning characteristic that may be needed. They can also tune over a wide range, and can normally tune over an octave range with less than a 20-volt tuning voltage shift. They do not give an especially high Q standard, however. Since this will deduct from the tuned circuit's overall Q, this will mean that the output of the phase noise is as good as that which can be obtained using an abrupt varactor diode. Despite the apparent simplicity of the circuit, the voltage-controlled oscillator design is far from trivial. A design would also involve careful optimization of the levels of input coupled with the system and layout. The VCO's design will need to carefully balance the requirements of sometimes conflicting requirements, such as a large tuning range and low noise phase. The standards of efficiency that can be achieved are surprisingly good once the design has been completely configured and the design has been completed.Ⅸ FAQ1. What is a Voltage Controlled Oscillator?A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is an electronic oscillator whose oscillation frequency is controlled by a voltage input. The applied input voltage determines the instantaneous oscillation frequency. 2. What is the use of VCO in PLL?VCO stands for Voltage Controlled Oscillator. PLL operation is simple. VCO creates a high-frequency clock that is divided by some factor. This divided frequency is compared against a stable, reference, frequency using a phase comparator and difference (in-phase or frequency) is converted into voltage and fed back into VCO.Depending on voltage difference VCO frequency will be higher or lower. For example, let’s suppose we have VCO generating 10000 at 5V and divide by 100 dividers. The reference frequency is 90. The phase comparator will subtract two frequencies, 100 - 90 = 10 and will produce some voltage proportional to the frequency difference. This voltage is fed back into VCO and will increase 5V to 6V. Voltage increase will result in frequency drop. The process will continue as long as VCO generated frequency is equal to reference, in our case 9000.From above we see PLL output frequency is: Out = Ref * DividerVCO in RF is produced using varicap diodes - diodes which capacity depends on reverse voltage. Varicap diodes are available with capacities ranging from 1pF up to 500pF and capacity change 2 - 20. How PLL is stable depends on the reference clock and a phase comparator. In the simplest case phase comparator are the XOR gate and RC filter. 3. Why is VCO better than DCO?Of course, the real answer depends on the application. But one important application for a VCO is to implement a so-called phase-lock-loop. In that application, the smoothly continuous frequency vs voltage characteristic of a VCO would allow the VCO to track some variable reference frequency much more precisely. A 'typical' DCO in the same application could only achieve a step-wise approximation to tight tracking. Another, historically more important, application of a VCO is as the primary component of an FM broadcast transmitter. Using a conventional DCO in this application would typically produce an unacceptable amount of weird, noisy distortion in the demodulated audio as the DCO control input attempted to track the audio signal. But yes, it is possible to conceptualize, and even practical to design, a DCO whose frequency control steps are so fine and rapid that, used in an FM broadcast transmitter, the listener would not notice the step-wise tuning of the carrier. 4. What is the function of a VCO voltage-controlled oscillator?A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is an electronic oscillator whose oscillation frequency is controlled by a voltage input. The applied input voltage determines the instantaneous oscillation frequency. 5. How does voltage control oscillator work?A voltage-controlled oscillator is an oscillator with an output signal whose output can be varied over a range, which is controlled by the input DC voltage. It is an oscillator whose output frequency is directly related to the voltage at its input. The oscillation frequency varies from few hertz to hundreds of GHz. 6. How do you make a voltage-controlled oscillator? To make a VCO, the oscillator needs to be tuned by a voltage. This can be achieved by making the variable capacitor from varactor diodes. The tuning voltage for the VCO can then be applied to the varactors. 7. What is the output of VCO?The VCO has an output power level of -3 dBm into 50 Ω with phase noise of -101 dBc/Hz typical at 100 kHz offset. The control voltage range is 0.4 to 2.4 volts, and load pulling is typically 0.75 MHz, pk-pk. Power supply pushing is 280 kHz/volt (typical). 8. What is the VCO tuning range? The VCO is linearly tunable from 806 to 1,113 MHz with a 34% tuning range controlled linearly by the tuning voltage. The phase noise of the VCO is -100.4 dBc/Hz at 100-kHz offset frequency from a 903 MHz carrier. 9. What is VCO phase noise?Characterizing Phase Noise. The term phase noise is widely used for describing short-term random frequency fluctuations of a. signal. Frequency stability is a measure of the degree to which an oscillator maintains the same value. 10. Which is the input terminal in a VCO?It generates the square wave at the output whose frequency is determined by a control voltage. The first op-amp works as an integrator. The control voltage is applied at the input terminal and due to the voltage divider arrangement, half the control voltage is applied at the positive terminal of the first op-amp.

How to Test a Diode in Circuit with a Multimeter?

IntroductionSemiconductor diode, also known as crystal diode, has obvious unidirectional conductivity. It is a kind of electronic components widely used in electrical equipment for protection, rectification, switching, and many other applications. So it is pretty common to see diodes in daily electronic circuits, such as Zener diodes, light-emitting diodes, photodiodes, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to know how to test whether a diode is properly working or not.How to Test a Diode Using a MultimeterCatalogIntroductionⅠ Diode Basics1.1 To Figure Out Diode Anode and Cathode1.2 What Would Cause a Diode to Fail?1.3 Common Diode Failures AnalysisⅡ How to Test Diode with a Multimeter?2.1 Digital Multimeter and Analog Multimeter2.2 Common Diodes Testing Rules2.3 Testing Methods of Types of DiodesⅢ Example Analysis3.1 Test a Diode in Circuit3.2 Power-off and Power-on Testing Methods3.3 ConclusionⅠ Diode Basics1.1 To Figure Out Diode Anode and CathodeThe anode and cathode of diode can be distinguished by screen printing on PCB board, which are as shown in the following:1) The notched end is the cathode of diode.2) The end with a horizontal bar is the cathode.3) The end with white parallel bars is the cathode.4) One end of the triangle arrow is the cathode.5) The small end of the plug-in diode is the cathode, and another big end is the anode.1.2 What Would Cause a Diode to Fail? The common reasons for a diode failure are open circuit, short circuit and unstable voltage regulation. Among these three types of failures, there may be signs. For example, the power supply voltage rises, the supply voltage drops to zero or the output is unstable. Therefore, specific problems must be analyzed in detail for the diode test. The common measurement tool for diode is a multimeter, including on-circuit measurement (the diode is on the circuit board) and off-circuit measurement (the diode is not on the circuit board). As for the basic principle of diode measurement, the forward resistance and the reverse resistance of the PN junction are measured, and the basic judgment is based on the values of them. Therefore, to do a good job in diode test, it is necessary to understand the basic structure and working principle of diodes, and then to understand the main fault characteristics of the diode. 1.3 Common Diode Failures Analysis1) open circuitThis means that the positive and negative electrodes of the diode have been disconnected, and the forward and reverse resistance of the diode have become infinite. After the diode is open, the circuit is in an open state.2) voltage breakdownThis means that there is a path between the positive and negative electrodes of the diode, and the forward and reverse resistance are as large as or close to each other(but not infinite). After a diode breaks down, the action between the positive and negative electrodes may always exit, because there are different manifestations in different circuits.3) forward voltageIf the forward resistance of the diode is too large, the voltage drop of the signal on the diode will increase, which will cause the output signal to decrease, and the diode will be damaged due to the heat. After the forward resistance becomes larger, the unidirectional conductivity of the diode will become poor.4) reverse voltageThe reverse resistance of the diode becomes smaller, which means the unidirectional conductivity of the diode be effected.5) performance degradationUnder this circumstance, the diode does not have obvious failures such as open circuit or breakdown. However, when the situation is getting worse, the stability of the circuit will deteriorate or the output signal voltage of the circuit will drop. Ⅱ How to Test Diode with a Multimeter?2.1 Digital Multimeter and Analog MultimeterWhen using a digital multimeter to test a diode, the red probe connects with the anode and the black probe connects with the cathode. At this time, the measured resistance is the forward conduction resistance of the diode, which is just the opposite of the test result of an analog multimeter. 2.2 Common Diodes Testing Rules(1) The forward resistance of the low-power germanium diode is 300Ω~500Ω, and the silicon diode is lkΩ or more. The former reverse resistance is tens of thousand ohms, and the latter is above 500kΩ (the value of high-power diode is smaller).(2) The polarity of the diode can be judged according to the resistance values (small forward resistance and large reverse resistance). Set the multimeter to the ohm block (Usually use R×100 or R×1k block, do not use R×1 block or R×10k block. The R×1 block is in a large current, it is easy to burn the tube, while using R×10k block may cause the tube broken down with high voltage). Connect the two polarities of the diode with the test probes respectively, and measure the two resistance values. When the measured resistance value is smaller, the end connected to the black lead is the anode. In the same way, when the measured resistance value is larger, the end connected to the black probe is the cathode. If the measured reverse resistance is small, it means that the diode is short-circuited, on the contrary, if the forward resistance is large, it means that the tube is open. In both cases, the diode can’t be work normally.(3) Silicon diodes generally have a forward voltage drop of 0.6V~0.7V, and the forward voltage drop of a germanium diode is 0.IV~0.3V. By measuring the forward voltage of the diode, it can be judged that the tested diode is a silicon tube or a germanium tube. This method is to connect a resistor (lkΩ) behind the power supply, and then connect with the diode according to the polarity characteristic to make the diode forward conducting. At this time, use a multimeter to measure the tube voltage drop. In addition, it is more convenient if it is used in energized dynamic measurement. 2.3 Testing Methods of Types of DiodesZener DiodesHow to test a Zener diode? The following here is to give some ideas.(1) Generally use the low-resistance block to test the Zener diode with a multimeter. Since the battery in the meter is 1.5V, this voltage is not enough to make the Zener diode reverse breakdown. So the forward and reverse resistance should be the same as a normal diode.(2) Measurement of the voltage stabilization value Vz of the Zener diode. When measuring diode, the power supply voltage must be greater than the stable voltage of the tube under test. In this way, the high-resistance block of the multimeter (R×10k) must be used. At this time, the battery in the meter has a higher voltage. When the multimeter's range is set to high barrier, measure diode reverse resistance. If the measured resistance is Rx, the voltage regulation value of the Zener diode is:In the formula, n is the override of the gear used. For example, if the highest electrical barrier ofR0 is the central resistance of the multimeter.E0 is the highest battery voltage value of the multimeter used.Example: Use an MF50 multimeter to measure a 2CW14 diode.R0=10Ω, the highest electrical barrier is R×10k.E0=15V, the measured reverse resistance is 75kΩ, then its voltage regulation value is:If the measured resistance is very large (close to infinite), it means that the voltage Vz under test is greater than E0, therefore, tube will not break down. If the measured resistance is very small (0 or only a few ohms), it means that the test probes are connected reversely, and then just swap the test probes. Light-emitting Diodes (LED)A light-emitting diode is a semiconductor device that converts electrical energy into light energy. It has the characteristics of small size, low working voltage and low working current.(1) There is a PN junction inside the light-emitting diode, so LED has the same characteristic of unidirectional conductivity. Its detection is similar to the measurement of ordinary diodes.(2) Use the R×1k or R×10k gear, and the forward and reverse resistance values are measured. Generally, the forward resistance is less than 50kΩ, and the reverse resistance is greater than 200kΩ.(3) The working current of the light-emitting diode is an important parameter. If the working current is too small, the light-emitting diode will not light up, and it is too large, the light-emitting diode will be easily damaged.(4) The forward turn-on voltage of the light-emitting diode is 1.2V ~ 2.5V, and the reverse breakdown voltage is about 5V. PhotodiodesPhotodiode is a semiconductor device that can convert light intensity into electrical signals.(1) There is a window on the top of the photodiode that can inject light, and the light irradiates the die through it. Under the excitation of the light, a large number of photoelectric particles are generated in the photodiode, which greatly enhances its conductivity and reduces internal resistance.(2) The photodiode is similar to the Zener diode. It also works in the reverse state, with reverse voltage.(3) The forward resistance of the photodiode does not change with the light. Its reverse resistance is larger when there is no light, and becomes smaller when it is exposed to light. That is, the stronger the light, the smaller the reverse resistance. Without light, the reverse resistance will return to the original value.(4) According to the related principle, use a multimeter to measure the reverse resistance of the photodiode. Change the light intensity when measuring, and observe the change of the reverse resistance of the photodiode. If there is no change or less change of the reverse resistance when light changes, it indicates that the tube has failed. High-speed Switching DiodesThe method of detecting high-speed silicon switching diodes is the same as that of ordinary diodes. The difference is that the forward resistance of this tube is relatively large. Measuring with Rxlk block, the forward resistance value is 5k ~ 10k in general, and the reverse resistance value is infinite. Fast Recovery Diodes / Ultrafast Recovery DiodesDetecting fast recovery and ultra-fast recovery diodes with a multimeter is basically the same as that of detecting plastic-encapsulated silicon rectifier diodes. That is, first use the Rxlk block to test its unidirectional conductivity. Generally, the size of forward resistance is about 4 ~ 5k, and the reverse resistance is infinite. And then use the Rxl block to repeat the test, at this time, the forward resistance is several ohms, and the reverse resistance is still infinite. DIAC (Diode for Alternating Current) DiodesUse the Rxlk block, and measure the forward and reverse resistance values of diac, which should be infinite. If the test probes are exchanged to measure, the pointer swings to the right, which indicates that the test tube has a leakage fault. Another method is placing the multimeter in the DC voltage block. During the test, shake the megohmmeter, and the voltage value indicated by the multimeter is the VBO value of the tube. Then change the two pins of the tested tube, and measure the VBR value in the same way. Finally, compare VBO and VBR. The smaller the difference between the absolute values of the two, the better the symmetry of the diac diode. TVS DiodesFor the dual TVS, resistance values between the two pins should be infinite when the red and black test probes of multimeter are exchanged at random. Otherwise, the tube has poor performance or has been damaged. High-frequency Varistor Diodesa. Identify Diode PolarityThe difference between high-frequency varistor diodes and ordinary diodes is that their color code is different. It is generally black of ordinary diodes, while high-frequency varistor diodes’ is light. Its polarity rule is similar to that of ordinary diodes. That is, the end with the green ring is the cathode, otherwise it is the anode.b. Measure Forward and Reverse ResistanceThe specific method is the same as the method of measuring ordinary diodes. Using the Rxlk block of a AM-500 multimeter, the forward resistance is 5k~55k, and the reverse resistance is infinite. Varactor DiodesUsing Rx10k block, no matter how the red and black test leads are exchanged for measurement, the resistance between the two pins of the varactor diode should be infinite. During the measurement, if the multimeter swings slightly to the right or the resistance value is zero, it means that the varactor diode under test has a leakage fault or has been broken down. No matter the loss of varactor diode capacity or internal open-circuit fault, it is impossible to detect them with a multimeter. When necessary, the replacement method can be used for inspection to make judgment. Infrared Light Emitting Diodes (IRED)Put the multimeter in the Rxlk block and measure the forward and reverse resistance of the IRED diode. Generally, the forward resistance should be about 30k, and the reverse resistance should be above 500k. It means the tube can work normally. The larger the reverse resistance, the better. IR Receiver Diodesa. Appearance Identification: Diode Cathode / Anode(1) Common infrared receiving diodes are black in appearance. In addition, there is a small oblique plane at the top of the tube body of the infrared receiving diode. Usually, the pin with one end of the oblique plane is the negative pole and the other end is the positive pole.(2) Use the Rxlk block to test the resistances between two pins. When a diode works normally, the resistance value of two pins are different. And exchange the test leads several times to get some pairs of values. According to the smaller resistance value, the pin connected to the red probe is the cathode, and the pin connected to the black probe is the anode.b. Performance DetectionUse a multimeter to measure the forward and reverse resistance of the infrared receiving diode. According to the resistance values, whether the diode is damaged can be judged preliminarily. Laser DiodesUse the Rxlk block of multimeter, and determine the order of the pins of the laser diode according to the method of detecting ordinary diodes. Because the forward voltage drop of the laser diode is larger than that of the ordinary diode, when detecting the forward resistance, the pointer of the multimeter is slightly deflected to the right, and the reverse resistance is infinite. Unijunction Transistor (UJT)a. Discrimination of ElectrodesBased on the R×1k block, use two meter pens to measure the forward and reverse resistance between any two of the three electrodes ( base B1 and base B2, and emitter E) of the ujt diode. The measured resistance values between the two electrodes are both 2~10kΩ, in addition, B1 and B2 will be different.b. Performance JudgmentThe performance of an ujt diode can be judged by measuring whether the resistance between its pins is normal. Use the R×1k barrier, the black test lead connect to the emitter E, and the red test lead connect to the two base electrodes in turn. Normally, a resistance value should be several thousand to ten thousand ohms. On the contrary, the red test lead connects to the emitter E, and the black test lead connects to the two base electrodes in turn, and the resistance should be infinite under normal conditions. The forward and reverse resistance values between the two bases are both in the range of 2~10kΩ. If they differ greatly from the normal value, the diode is damaged. Ⅲ Example Analysis3.1 Test a Diode in Circuita. Diode Test UsingAnalog MultimeterThe following measurements are all based on silicon diodes. If it is a germanium diode, the forward and reverse resistance of the diode will decrease.1) Measure forward resistance FRThe following figure is a wiring schematic diagram for measuring the forward resistance of a diode with an analog multimeter:Give the result as follows:IndicatorDescriptionUse the R×1k block to measure the diode, the forward resistance is several thousand ohms, and the pointer indicates stability. If the pointer swings slightly, it indicates that the thermal stability of the diode is poor.If the pointer indicates hundreds of kiloohms when measuring the forward resistance, it means that the diode is open.If the pointer indicates tens of kiloohms, it indicates that the diode has a large forward resistance and poor diode performance. Description of measurement of forward resistance:Forward Resistance (FR)DescriptionThousands of ohmsNormalZero or much less than a few thousand ohmsBreakdownHundreds of kilosLarge FR, the diode is openDozens of kilohmsLarge FR, bad forward characteristicsThe pointer is unstablePoor stability 2) Measure reverse resistance RRThe following figure is a wiring schematic diagram for measuring the reverse resistance of a diode with an analog multimeter:Give the result as follows:IndicatorDescriptionWhen measuring the reverse resistance, the value should be several hundred kiloohms. The larger the resistance value is, the better the indicator should be stable. If the reverse resistance is only a few thousand ohms, it means that the diode has broken down and has lost its unidirectional conductivity. Description of measurement of reverse resistanceReverse ResistanceDescriptionHundreds of kilosNormalZeroBreakdownMuch less than a few hundred thousand ohmsDiode’s reverse characteristic is not good.Pointer does not moveThe diode is open. Note: The reverse resistance of some diodes is very large, at this time, it is not certain that the diode is open, so that its forward resistance should be measured. If the value is normal, it means that the diode is not open.Pointer is unstableThe pointer cannot be stabilized at a certain resistance value during measurement, indicating that the diode has poor stability. 3.2 Power-off and Power-on Testing MethodsDiode in-circuit measurement is divided into two situations: Power-off and Power-on statea. Power-off MeasurementThere are something should be noted the method of this test. The influence of the external circuit on the test result is the same as the resistance and capacitance measured of internal circuit. And the influence of the measured forward resistance by the external circuit is lower than the reverse resistance. If there is any doubt about the measuring result, the diode should be removed from the circuit and measured separately. b. Power- on MeasurementWhen the circuit board is powered on, the test point is the tube voltage drop. Because the diode has a very important characteristic: when it is turned on, the tube voltage drop is basically unchanged. So the voltage drop is normal after being turned on, that is to say, the diode is normal.Measurement method: The diagram below shows the connection diagram of the tube voltage drop after the diode in the DC circuit. Setting multimeter in DC voltage 1 V block, the red probe is connected to the cathode of the diode, and the voltage indicated is the forward voltage drop of the diode. Diode forward voltage drop measurement results are analyzed as follows:DiodeDescriptionSilicon diode0.6VThe diode is normal and in a forward conducting state.> 0.6VThe diode is not in the conducting state.Close to 0The diode is in a breakdown state, the current in the loop will increase.Germanium diode0.2VThe diode is normal and in a forward conducting state.> 0.2VThe diode is off or is faulty.Close to 0In the breakdown state, the loop current increases significantly, without unidirectional conductivity. 3.3 ConclusionThe following points should be noted when measuring diodes:1) The diode in AC is in the cut-off state, because the diode is in the reverse state, and the reverse voltage at both ends is very large. The average voltage across the diode measured by the DC block is negative at this time.2) Use different blocks of the same multimeter to measure positive and negative resistance of one diode, their values will different. The forward and reverse resistances of the same diode measured with different multimeters are also different.3) When measuring the forward resistance of a diode, if the pointer cannot stop at a certain resistance value and constantly swings, it indicates that the thermal stability of the diode is not good.4) Some multimeters will provide a “diode check” function that displays the actual forward voltage of the diode when its conducting current. Such meters typically indicate a slightly lower forward voltage than what is “nominal state” for a diode, due to the very small amount of current used during the measurement. Frequently Asked Questions about Diode Test1. What is a diode test?A diode is best tested by measuring the voltage drop across the diode when it is forward-biased. ... A multimeter's Diode Test mode produces a small voltage between test leads. The multimeter then displays the voltage drop when the test leads are connected across a diode when forward-biased. 2. How do you test a rectifier diode?Touch the red (positive) probe of the multimeter to the positive terminal of the diode closet to the welder case interior. Touch the black (negative) probe of the multimeter to the negative terminal of the same diode. The multimeter should read a resistance between 0 and 1 ohm, or the diode is faulty. 3. How can you tell if a diode is positive or negative?Sometimes it's easiest to just use a multimeter to test for polarity. Turn the multimeter to the diode setting (usually indicated by a diode symbol), and touch each probe to one of the LED terminals. If the LED lights up, the positive probe is touching the anode, and the negative probe is touching the cathode. 4. How do you test a Schottky diode?Connect the red positive test lead to the anode of the Schottky diode and the black common test lead to the cathode of the diode. Listen for a “beep” or a “buzz” from the multimeter. If the Schottky diode responds as expected, the multimeter will sound a tone. 5. Can I test a diode in circuit?A diode is best tested by measuring the voltage drop across the diode when it is forward-biased. A forward-biased diode acts as a closed switch, permitting current to flow. A multimeter's Diode Test mode produces a small voltage between test leads. ... Voltage may be present in the circuit due to charged capacitors. 6. How do you check a diode?Diode PolarityThe polarity of both diodes is indicated with a stripe on one end of the body. The stripe corresponds to the line in the schematic symbol, indicating the cathode. The other end (no stripe) is the anode, indicated by the triangle in the schematic symbol. 7. What happens when a diode fails? However, a failed diode can short out too. In this case, the diode will exhibit a small resistance in both directions. The common reasons for a diode failure are excessive forward current and a large reverse voltage. Usually, large reverse voltage leads to a shorted diode while overcurrent makes it fail open. 8. How can you tell if a diode is blown?Turn the dial to “diode test” mode. This level of current is high enough to produce a reading, yet not so high that the diode will fail. It may also be labeled as “diode check” on your multimeter and is usually indicated by a small diode symbol. The diode symbol will look like a triangle pointing towards a line.

LED Drivers Tutorial: Failure Analysis and Maintenance

IntroductionLED lights cannot directly use the conventional mains grid voltage, because of the characteristics of LED lighting. In order to meet the special voltage and current requirements of LEDs, a specially designed voltage conversion device must be used to make LEDs work normally. This device is an LED driver. LED drivers are usually switching mode devices that convert the input voltage (Typically 120-220 VAC or 12 VDC) into a voltage at which the current drawn by the LED's is equal to its drive current. The drive current is regulated for optimum brightness, led service life, and battery life. A drive current lower than the maximum drive current of an LED can greatly prolong service life. As a key part of LED lighting, the quality of LED drivers directly affects the performance of LED lighting.Choose the Correct LED Drivers For LED LightsNo matter how good the quality of the LED driver is, failure and maintenance are inevitable. This article will analyze the 10 failures in LED lighting design and its application based on the relevant technology and practical experience of the LED driver.CatalogIntroductionⅠ LED Driver Failure Analysis1.1 Forward Voltage Drop (Vf) Range1.2 Power Margin and Derating Requirements1.3 LED Working Characteristics1.4 Test Session1.5 Different Load with Different Test Results1.6 LED Driver Circuit Problem1.7 Wrong Phase Wring1.8 Grid Fluctuation1.9 Frequent Line Trips1.10 Drive CoolingⅡ LED Driver Maintenance2.1 Multimeter to Detect LED Driver2.2 Identify LED Power SupplyⅢ LED Driver Circuit Modulation3.1 Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)3.2 Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM)3.3 Sliding-Mode ModulationⅣ One Question Related to LED DriverⅠ LED Driver Failure AnalysisThe LED driver is measuring current passing through LEDs using sense resistor and then increase or decrease the voltage to maintain constant current continuously. LEDs are kind of diode so they need DC voltage to operate so most of the LED drivers are boost and can vary output supply in wide range (example, 16V to 38V). They also have dimming control by PWM signal from microcontroller OR by having a manual potentiometer to change sense resistor. According to them, LED driver failures are complex, but we can follow the steps below to analyse.1.1 Forward Voltage Drop (Vf) RangeLED lamp load end is generally composed of a number of LEDs connected in series, and its working voltage Vo=Vf×Ns, where Ns represents the number of LEDs. And the Vf of an LED varies with temperature. Generally, at a constant current, Vf becomes lower at high temperatures and becomes higher at low temperatures. The LED lamp load working voltage is VoL at high temperature, and VoH represents a value at low temperature. When selecting an LED driver, consider that the driver output voltage range is greater than VoL~VoH.If the maximum output voltage of the LED driver is lower than VoH, the maximum power of the lamp may not reach the actual power required at low temperature. If the minimum voltage of the selected LED driver is higher than VoL, the output of the driver may exceed the working range at high temperature. And LED driver will work unstable, making the lights flicker.Considering the overall cost and lamp efficiency, don’t blindly pursue the ultra-wide output voltage range of the LED driver. Because the driver voltage is only in a certain range, its efficiency is the highest. When the range is exceeded, the efficiency and power factor (PF) will deteriorate. In addition, if the design of the driver output voltage range is too wide, high costs and unoptimized efficiency will be made. 1.2 Power Margin and Derating RequirementsIn general, the nominal power of the LED driver refers to the data measured under the rated environment and rated voltage. Taking into account different applications, most LED driver suppliers will provide power derating curves in their product specifications (common load vs. ambient temperature derating curves and load vs. input voltage derating curves). As shown in Figure 1, the red curve represents the power derating curve when the input is 120Vac, and its load varies with the ambient temperature. When the ambient temperature is lower than 50℃, the LED driver is allowed to be 100% full load. When the ambient temperature is as high as 70℃, the LED driver can only be derated to 60% of the load. When the ambient temperature changes between 50℃~70℃, the driver load varies with the temperature linearly.Figure 1. Power Derating Curve (Load vs Ambient Temperature)The blue curve represents the power derating curve when the input is 230Vac or 277Vac, and its load varies with the ambient temperature. The principle is similar to the above mentioning. As shown in Figure 2, the blue curve represents the derating curve of the LED driver when the ambient temperature is 55°C, its output power varies with the input voltage. When the input voltage is 140Vac, the load of the driver is allowed to be 100%, and the input voltage will be adjusted downward. If the output power remains the same, the input current will rise, resulting in input terminal loss and lower efficiency. When the device temperature rises, exceeding the rated temperature, which may cause the device to fail.Figure 2. Power Derating Curve (Load vs Input Voltage)Therefore, when the input voltage is less than 140Vac, the output load of the LED driver is required to linearly decrease as the input voltage decreases. According to the above derating curve and corresponding requirements, when choosing a LED driver, actual applying needs are important, as well as the derating margin. 1.3 LED Working CharacteristicsWhen the required input power is a fixed value, such as a fixed error of 5%, the output current can only be adjusted to the specified power for each lamp. Due to different working ambient temperature and different lighting time, the power of each lamp will vary greatly.Although there are considerations for marketing and business factors. However, the volt-ampere characteristic of the LED lamp determines that the LED driver is a constant current source, and its output voltage varies with the series voltage Vo of the LED load. When the efficiency of the driver is basically unchanged, its input power changes with Vo. And meanwhile, the overall efficiency of the LED driver will increase after thermal equilibrium. Under the same output power, the input power will decrease compared to the boot time. Therefore, when formulating requirements, LED driver users should first understand the operating characteristics of LEDs. Avoid suggesting indicators that do not meet the principles of operating characteristics, and indicators that far exceed actual requirements, resulting in excess quality and cost waste. 1.4 Test SessionSample test problems, for example, multi-brand LED driver samples all failed during the test. The reason is that a self-dual voltage regulator is used to directly power the LED driver for testing. After power on, the voltage regulator is gradually adjusted from 0Vac to the rated operating voltage of the LED driver. This kind of test operation can easily make the LED driver start and work with the load when the input voltage is very small, but this situation will cause the input current to be far greater than the rated value. And the internal input terminal related components, such as fuses, rectifier bridges, thermistors, etc. will fail due to excessive current or overheating, damaging the LED driver. The correct test method is to adjust the voltage regulator to the rated operating voltage range of the LED driver, and then connect the driver to power-on test. Of course, technically improving the design can also avoid the failure caused by this kind of test misoperation. That is, a starting voltage limit circuit and an input undervoltage protection circuit are set at the input of the driver. When the input does not reach the start-up voltage set by the driver, the driver does not work. When the input voltage drops to the input undervoltage protection point, the driver enters the protection state. Although the driver has a self-protection function and will not fail, you must carefully understand whether the purchased LED driver product has this protection before testing (considering the actual application environment of the LED driver, most LED drivers currently do not have this set). 1.5 Different Load with Different Test ResultsOn the one hand, when the LED driver is tested with LED lights, the result is normal; on the other hand, when driver tested with an electronic load, the result may be abnormal. Usually this phenomenon has the following reasons:1) The output instantaneous voltage or power of the driver exceeds the working range of the electronic load instrument. (Especially in CV mode, the maximum test power should not exceed 70% of the maximum power of the load. Otherwise, the load may instantaneously have overpower protection when loading, causing the driver to fail to work.)2) The characteristics of the electronic load instrument used are not suitable for measuring constant-current device. And the load voltage gear jumping, result in the drive to fail to work.3) Because there is a large capacitor inside the input of the electronic load meter. The test is equivalent to connecting a large capacitor in parallel with the driver output, which may cause the driver's current sampling work to be unstable. As we all known, the LED driver is designed to meet the working characteristics of LED lamps. The most practical test method is to use the LED lamp as a load, and connects an ammeter and a voltmeter in series to test. 1.6 LED Driver Circuit ProblemThe following conditions often cause damage to the LED driver:Connect AC to the DC output terminal of the driver, causing the driver to fail.Connect AC to the DC/DC output or input of the driver, causing the driver to fail.Connect the output terminal of the constant current to the dimming light, causing the driver to fail.Connect the phase wire to the ground wire causing the driver has no output and the housing is charged. 1.7 Wrong Phase WringTake an international example: the rated working voltage between each phase line and the neutral line is 220V, and the voltage between the phase line and the phase line is 380V. If the driver is connected to two phase wires, after power on, the LED driver input voltage exceeds the rated range, which cause the product to fail.As shown in Figure 3, V1 represents the first phase voltage, V2 represents the second phase voltage, and R1 and R2 respectively represent the drivers normally installed on the line. When the neutral line (N) on the circuit is disconnected, the drivers R1 and R2 on the two branches are connected to the 380V voltage after being connected in series. Because of the difference in input internal resistance, when one of the drivers is charged to start, the internal resistance becomes smaller. Most of the voltage may be applied to another driver, causing the overvoltage damage. Therefore, it is recommended that switches or short-circuiters on the same distribution branch should be disconnected together, not just cut off the neutral line. What’s more, do not put the power distribution fuse on the neutral line to avoid bad effect of the neutral line on the circuit.Figure 3. Neutral Line Open Circuit Diagram 1.8 Grid FluctuationWhen wires of a transformer grid branch is too long and there is large power equipment on the branch, the grid voltage will fluctuate sharply when the large equipment starts and stops. It even causes the grid to be unstable. When the grid voltage exceeds 310V, the drive may be damaged (even if there is an LED lightning protection device, it is useless. Because the lightning protection device is to deal with pulse spikes of tens of uS level, and the fluctuation of the grid may reach tens of mS, or even hundreds of mS) . Therefore, special attention should be paid when there is large electric machinery on the street lighting branch power grid. It is best to monitor the fluctuation range of the power grid or to supply power to the grid transformer separately. 1.9 Frequent Line TripsToo many lights are connected on the same branch, which leads to overload on a certain phase and uneven power distribution among the phases, resulting in frequent line trips. 1.10 Drive CoolingAlthough the LED has high luminous efficiency, only a small part of the energy flowing through the LED is radiated in the form of visible light. And most of the remaining energy is consumed in the LED in the form of heat, so the LED generates more serious heat. When the driver is installed in a non-ventilated environment, the driver housing should be in contact with the lamp housing as much as possible. If possible, apply thermal glue or a thermal pad on the contact surface between the housing and the lamp housing to improve the heat dissipation of the LED driver and ensure the reliability of the driver.Ⅱ LED Driver Maintenance2.1 Multimeter to Detect LED DriverMeasuring the output voltage of the no-load LED driver with a multimeter, if the output voltage is not detected, does it mean that the driver is broken? Look at the following steps:1) The voltage of the non-isolated LED power supply in the no-load state is about 300V tested with a multimeter, and it is about 220V with a PFC.2) Isolating the LED power supply, the voltage in the no-load state, tested with a multimeter, is about 3-5V more than the total voltage of the rated LED series. However, although the output voltage can be tested under no load, it does not mean that it can be normal under load. At this time, it is necessary to connect the corresponding LED light board to see the performance of the LED lighting. If there is no flicker, the output voltage is also equal to the total voltage of LED lights in series connection. This situation can be considered normal, otherwise it fails. If there is no output voltage at no load, the power supply must be broken. 2.2 Identify LED Power SupplyThe LED power supply is widely used in many applications. So how to distinguish the quality of LED power supply is particularly important. A few methods are briefly introduced below. LED Driver ICThe power of IC drive, the quality of IC directly affects the whole power supply. The lighting manufacturer should understand the IC design solution and calculate the cost of the driver, so as to purchase power products at a reasonable price. TransformersThe control chip can be regarded as the brain center of the power supply, while the transformers determine the power and temperature resistance. The transformer is responsible for the transfer of "AC to DC". However, the energy overload will damage the device. The core of the transformer is the magnetic core and the wire package. Electrolytic Capacitors and Ceramic CapacitorsThe quality and life requirements of input electrolytic capacitors are important. However, people tend to ignore the quality requirements of the output capacitor. In fact, the life of the output capacitor also has a great impact on the life of the power supply. The output end has a switching frequency of up to 60,000 times per second, which causes the parasitic resistance of the capacitor to heat up and produce substances similar to scale. Finally, the electrolyte heats up and bursts. Ceramic capacitors: The materials are divided into X7R, X5R and Y5V, and the actual capacitance value of Y5V can only reach 1/10 of the actual value. In addition, the nominal capacitance value only refers to when a capacitor works at 0V. Therefore, this tiny chip with poor options will also lead to a price difference in cost and greatly shorten the life of the power supply. Circuit Design and Welding ProcessJudgment of the pros and cons of the design: Aside from the professional point of view, it can be distinguished by some intuitive methods, such as the neat layout of the components, and soldering points. As for flying leads and manually adding components, it is a serious lack of techniques and efficiency. As we all know, the quality of mechanized production of wave soldering process is definitely better than manual welding. Because the machining process is more neat and uniform. Identification method: whether there is red glue on the back board. The flashing phenomenon of the lamp after a period of use is basically caused by the power supply or the weak welding of the lamp beads. However, it is extremely difficult to detect the virtual welding of products through aging, so AOI must be used to detect the quality of the power supply. Batch Inspection of Aging Racks and High Temperature Aging RoomsNo matter how good the power products are controlled by materials and production processes, they still need to be tested for aging. Because the incoming inspection of electronic components and transformers is difficult to control. Only through the aging of the entire batch of power supplies and the high temperature sampling inspection of the high temperature room. This is a wide-ranging screening to determine whether the materials have safety hazards. Ⅲ LED Driver Circuit ModulationThe LED driver circuit is divided into constant-voltage type and constant-current type according to the power supply to the LED. Constant-current switch type LED driver circuit samples the current flowing through the LED lamp, and gives the output control signal to control the on and off of the switching power tube, which aims to adjust the output current as the set value. The dimming control circuit mainly includes SCR dimming circuit, pulse width modulation (PWM), pulse frequency modulation (PFM), sliding mode control, PWM_PFM, PSM, etc. Let's take pulse width modulation (PWM), pulse frequency modulation (PFM), and sliding mode modulation to introduce in detail below. 3.1 Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)Pulse width modulation, shown in the figure below, refers to the stability of the output voltage by changing the on-time of the switching power tube in each cycle at a specific frequency. That is adjusting the duty cycle to obtain stable output voltage. When the output voltage changes due to the working environment, noise and other factors, the error amplifier samples the voltage change and sends the signal to the control circuit. The control circuit adjusts the duty cycle of the switching power tube signal to maintain the stability of the output voltage.Figure 4. PWM Modulation Based on BUCK StructureFigure 4 (a). Voltage ModeFigure 4 (b). Peak Current ModeFigure 4 (c). Average Current Mode3.1.1 Advantages of PWM(1) The PWM modulation method has high efficiency under heavy load, and has a good dynamic response to load changes.(2) The output ripple voltage is small and the linearity is high.(3) The frequency is stable, the duty cycle adjustment is not restricted, the control is simple, and both the current control mode and the voltage control mode are applicable.3.1.2 Disadvantages of PWM(1) The efficiency of PWM modulation method decreases at light load.(2) The transient response is slow during constant-voltage driving, and a more complicated compensation circuit is required.(3) Accurate current detection circuit is required for constant-current driving. 3.2 Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM)The pulse frequency modulation is shown in the figure below. Under the condition of a certain on-time of the switching power tube, the output voltage can be controlled by adjusting the off time. When the output voltage changes, the error amplifier samples the feedback signal and sends the output signal compared with the reference signal to the control circuit. The control circuit analyzes the error signal and generates a square wave signal with constant pulse width and varying frequency to control the switch power tube to maintain the stability of the output voltage.Figure 5. Pulse Frequency Modulation Based on BUCK Structure3.2.1 Advantages of PFM(1) The PFM modulation has very high efficiency, better frequency characteristics and higher voltage regulation rate at light load.(2) The PFM modulation has a relatively high transmission signal-to-noise ratio and a good anti-interference ability.(3) The output voltage has a large adjustable range and low power consumption.3.2.2 Disadvantages of PFM(1) The efficiency of the PFM modulation will decrease under heavy load.(2) The frequency spectrum of the output ripple is scattered and irregular.(3) The load adjustment range is very small, resulting in high filtering costs. 3.3 Sliding-Mode ModulationSliding-mode modulation mode, the full name is sliding mode variable structure control,  is a discontinuous control. As shown in Figure 6, the sliding mode makes the system structure change purposefully according to its current state, which force the system to make small amplitude and high frequency up and down movements along the designed trajectory under response conditions. That is, sliding mode movement. Reduce the system's sensitivity to disturbances and load jumps.Figure 6. Sliding Mode Control Based on BUCK Structure3.3.1 Advantages and Disadvantage of Sliding ModeIt has the advantages of fast dynamic response, strong robustness and wide stability range, but it also has a problem that the operating frequency is not fixed. Ⅳ One Question Related to LED Driver4.1 QuestionHow long do LED drivers last?4.2 AnswerWhile the light function of an LED may last for years, drivers can give out much sooner. This is why we recommend name brand LED bulbs for the home, especially those with 25,000 hour rated lives. In general, high power white LEDs use much more current, and need of more complicated drivers. Frequently Asked Questions about LED Drivers Failure Analysis and Maintenance1. What is a LED driver IC?They are configured as either inductorless (charge pump) or switching regulator-based LED drivers that support driving white LEDs in series, parallel or combination. ... Topologies include boost regulator, buck regulator, buck/boost, SEPIC topology LED drivers, and more. 2. What is a LED driver used for?LED drivers are electrical devices that prevent damage to LEDs by regulating the forward voltage (VF) of the LED that changes with temperature, avoiding thermal runaway while delivering a constant current to the LED. LED drivers also aid efforts to meet new energy requirements (e.g., Energy Star). 3. How do I choose an LED driver?Use an LED driver with at least the same value as your LED(s). The driver must have a higher output power than your LEDs require for extra safety. If the output is equivalent to the LED power requirements, it is running at full power. Running at full power may cause the driver to have a shorter life span. 4. Why do LED drivers fail?LED FailureThe LEDs usually fail, because they have been connected to a constant LED driver in parallel. If the LEDs have failed you may want to also replace the LED driver. We usually recommend using a model with an adjustable output, and trimming down the output voltage slightly, to avoid over powering the LEDs. 5. How long do LED drivers last?Namely, the life of the driving circuit expires prior to when the LED stops emitting light or has its brightness dropped. The typical nominal lifetime of these elements is often times less than 25,000 hours, while the lifetime of LED itself could be as long as 50,000-100,000 hours. 6. Why do my LED drivers get hot?If the LED driver is trying to draw DC (not a balanced load circuit) then that can also cause the transformer to overheat.7. What is the difference between a transformer and an LED driver?LED drivers and electronic transformers for retrofit LED lighting are not interchangeable. They differ in output and load compatibility i.e. which LED lights they will work with. The fundamental difference between the two is that LED drivers output DC while electronic halogen transformers output 12VAC.

AGM vs.Gel Batteries: What's the Difference in Design?

I OverviewValve regulated lead acid battery (VRLA battery) is generally divided into gel battery and AGM battery. Figure 1. Classification of VRLA BatteryGel battery is a valve regulated lead acid battery made by gel technology which not only refers to whether the battery contains gel electrolyte, but also includes the battery design ideas, structural characteristics, manufacturing technology and other technical measures to ensure the corresponding performance of the battery.Figure 2. Gel BatterySimilarly, for AGM battery, it also refers to valve regulated lead acid batteries manufactured by AGM technology. To hold the sulfuric acid in the battery with AGM separator is only one of the technical features of AGM battery.Figure 3. AGM BatteryBecause the two technologies are completely different, there is a great difference in performance between gel battery and AGM battery. In order to better understand the performance difference between gel battery and AGM battery, this article deeply discusses their differences in terms of battery design.Sealed Lead Acid Battery Recovery(The man in the vedio shows how to clean, open, refill, desulfate and test a totally dead sealed lead acid battery.)CatalogI OverviewII AGM vs. Gel Batteries: Electrolyte Fixation TechnologyIII AGM vs. Gel Batteries: ElectrolyteIV AGM vs. Gel Batteries: Polar Group4.1 AGM Battery has Excellent LargeCurrent Discharge Performance4.2 Make Full Use of Active Substances4.3 Conducive to the Transmission of Oxygen4.4 Prevent the Battery from Entering the Life Decline Period RrematurelyV AGM vs. Gel Batteries: Oxygen CycleVI AGM vs. Gel Batteries: CostVII ConclusionVIII AGM vs.Gel Batteries QuizII AGM vs. Gel Batteries: Electrolyte Fixation TechnologyBecause both gel battery and AGM battery adopt cathodic absorption maintenance-free technology based on internal oxygen cycle, there is no essential difference in maintenance-free technology, only in the way of fixing electrolyte. For the AGM battery, the AGM manufacturing technology is adopted, and the electrolyte in the battery, which is dilute sulfuric acid, can be held in the glass separator. The electrolyte is fixed by making use of the porosity of the glass separator, which has a strong adsorption, allowing the electrolyte to become immobilized. Its principle is similar to the principle of water absorbing sponge.Figure 4. Water Absorbing SpongeBecause dilute sulfuric acid is made of pure sulfuric acid and water, the density of pure sulfuric acid is 1.84g/cm3, and the density of pure water is 1.0g/cm3. In the backup battery, the storage battery is kept stationary for a long time. Due to the effect of gravity, the dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte will stratify, that is, the sulfuric acid density at the bottom is high, while the sulfuric acid density at the top is low. In high-type batteries, this delamination phenomenon is particularly evident. Therefore, in conventional batteries, the height of the battery generally does not exceed 400 mm.Figure 5. Delamination of ElectrolyteThe layering of the electrolyte will make the active material on the top of the electrode plate unable to release the capacity it should have because of insufficient acid, and it will be overcharged during charging. And the bottom will be difficult to charge because the sulfuric acid concentration is too high. At the same time, due to the delamination of the acid, concentration polarization back-EMF will also be generated in the upper and lower parts of the electrode plate, which ultimately reduces the operating voltage and capacity of the battery. Furthermore, excessively high sulfuric acid at the bottom will also accelerate the corrosion of the bottom grid and the sulfation of the plates, thereby shortening the battery life. For gel battery, it adopts gel manufacturing technology, and the electrolyte in the battery is fixed in the silicon gel. The fixation of the electrolyte is due to the silicone space network structure formed by the polymerization of gel gel particles to effectively fix the sulfuric acid electrolyte. The principle is similar to the use of jelly to fix the sulfuric acid electrolyte. In the space network, the silica gel is the skeleton supporting the entire network, and the sulfate ion can move freely at a certain level, which can ensure the smooth progress of the battery chemical reaction, that is, the smooth charge and discharge of the battery.Figure 6. Gel Battery ElectrolyteBecause the spatial network structure of silica gel is rich in a large number of silicon oxidation bonds, it can form hydrogen bonds with hydrogen in the sulfuric acid molecule. Due to this weak chemical action, the silica gel easily adsorbs and releases sulfuric acid molecules. Even if the electrolyte is not moved for a long time, due to the existence of this effect, it can basically offset the effect of gravity, so that the diluted sulfuric acid electrolyte is evenly distributed up and down, and it is not easy to cause delamination. Furthermore, the average pore size of the gel itself is about 100 times smaller than the average pore size of the AGM separator, and the comparative area of the gel itself is much larger than the specific surface area of the AGM separator. The small pores or micropores can be better keep sulfuric acid electrolyte. In the gel battery, since the electrolyte is not layered, the active materials on the upper and lower parts of the inner electrode plate of the battery can be fully utilized, so the battery has a long life span and can also be manufactured as a high-type battery.Figure 7. NO Delamination of ElectrolyteIII AGM vs. Gel Batteries: ElectrolyteThe AGM battery uses an AGM separator to fix the sulfuric acid electrolyte. In order to make the oxygen generated in the positive electrode in the later stage of charging easy to pass through the separator to the negative electrode and be absorbed by the negative electrode, a lean liquid design must be adopted to ensure the smooth progress of the internal oxygen cycle. The so-called lean electrolyte design takes the sponge's liquid absorption as an example. Under normal conditions, a sponge can be 100g of water. The actual design is only to allow the sponge to absorb 80~90g of water. This design is a lean electrolyte design. Therefore, the amount of sulfuric acid electrolyte in the AGM battery is relatively small. In lead-acid batteries, the sulfuric acid electrolyte is involved in the electrochemical reaction of the battery. In order to ensure the discharge performance of the battery (the amount of sulfuric acid needs to be sufficient), it can only be achieved by increasing the sulfuric acid concentration. Therefore, AGM batteries generally use higher density/concentration sulfuric acid.Due to the small amount of electrolyte in the AGM battery, the high concentration of sulfuric acid has a series of adverse effects on the battery itself. Since the amount of electrolyte in the AGM battery is relatively small and the heat capacity of the battery is also small, the AGM battery is sensitive to temperature. For batteries with the same capacity that can be fully charged, if the same amount of electricity is charged, the temperature rise of the AGM battery is significantly greater than that of the gel battery. For AGM batteries, due to the use of higher concentration of sulfuric acid, the grid corrosion is faster, and it is easier to produce inert lead sulfate, which makes the battery's charge acceptance worse, and the battery is more difficult to charge. That is, AGM batteries are more prone to early capacity decay. With the extension of battery life, the AGM battery continuously loses water due to overcharging, and the sulfuric acid concentration in the battery rises slowly, which is more serious. In batteries, the sulfuric acid saturation of the AGM separator is usually 95% to 85%. Compared with a fully saturated separator, when the saturation is 85%, the effective internal resistance of the battery increases by 90%. When the sulfuric acid saturation of the separator in the battery is less than 85%, the battery life will quickly end due to excessive tail current, lack of acid and excessive internal resistance. Therefore, for AGM batteries, the battery loses 10% of its water, and the life of the battery is reduced by more than 50%.Figure 8. Influence of AGM Battery Lean Liquid Design on Battery PerformanceThe development of the gel battery itself is based on the improvement of the flooded battery. Because the sulfuric acid electrolyte is fixed by silicon gel, the gas transmission inside the gel battery is completed through the channel formed by the cracks generated by the gel cracking. The amount of electrolyte does not affect the gas transmission channel. Therefore, there is no strict limit on the amount of electrolyte, and the liquid-rich design is usually adopted to ensure that the battery has better performance. Therefore, the amount of electrolyte in the gel battery is relatively large. For large-density batteries, the amount of rich liquid is about 20%, and for medium-density batteries, the amount of rich liquid is about 15%. Gel batteries generally use a lower concentration of acid than AGM batteries. At a lower acid density, the corrosion rate of the grid is lower, and the battery's charge acceptance is also significantly improved, thereby extending the battery's life span. Secondly, the gel battery has more electrolyte. The more electrolyte, the greater the heat capacity of the battery, so the gel battery is not very sensitive to temperature. The high temperature has relatively little effect on the performance and life span of the gel battery. In addition, due to the high voltage or maintenance operations such as equalizing or overcharging the battery during long-term use, the battery may lose water. The gel battery has more electrolyte and a small amount of water loss, which has little effect on the life of the battery. Therefore, the life span is longer and the battery stability is better. How a lead-acid battery works(The man in this vedio explains the essential principles of a lead-acid battery. )IV AGM vs. Gel Batteries: Polar Group In AGM batteries, the assembly compression ratio of the pole group has a very important impact on the battery performance and battery life.Appropriately increasing the pole group assembly pressure of the battery has the following benefits:4.1 AGM Battery has Excellent LargeCurrent Discharge PerformanceThe AGM battery adopts a tight assembly structure, so that the distance between the positive and negative plates is smaller, and the distance of ion conduction in the battery is shorter. Thereby reducing the internal resistance of the battery. Furthermore, with the tight assembly structure, the electrode plate and the separator maintain good contact, and the contact resistance between the separator and the electrode plate is also reduced. These make AGM batteries more conducive to large current discharge.4.2 Make Full Use of Active SubstancesBecause the AGM separator not only plays the role of isolating the positive and negative plates, but also plays the role of storing and maintaining the electrolyte. Adopting a tight assembly structure, the polar plate is close to the AGM separator, which allows the electrolyte to impregnate the entire polar plate, so that the active material is fully utilized, and the use capacity of the battery is increased.4.3 Conducive to the Transmission of OxygenWith a tight assembly structure, the polar plate is in close contact with the AGM separator, which is conducive to the smooth diffusion of oxygen through the separator to the negative electrode. Because the polar plate is under a large pressure, the AGM separator is compressed, and the micropores in the AGM separator perpendicular to the direction of the separator become larger, making oxygen easily penetrate the separator from the positive electrode to the negative electrode. On the other hand, because the AGM separator is compressed, the pores parallel to the direction of the separator plate become smaller, thereby suppressing the escape of oxygen generated in the positive electrode along the plane direction of the separator.4.4 Prevent the Battery from Entering the Life Decline Period RrematurelyTo prevent the battery from entering the life decline period prematurely, AGM separator has a strong liquid absorption performance and a high porosity. It is a separator made of hydrophilic glass fibers and does not contain a binder. The separator itself has poor strength. The material of the AGM separator is shown in Figure 9 below.Figure 9. Glass Fibers Put the AGM separator in boiling water for 1 hour, the AGM separator may disintegrate into pure glass fiber. If the AGM battery is loosely assembled, the escape of oxygen generated at the end of the battery charge may change the microstructure of the AGM separator, making the battery prone to early capacity decay. The tight assembly structure can effectively suppress the softening and shedding of the positive electrode active material, thereby greatly extending the life span of the AGM battery. Therefore, the AGM battery must adopt a tight assembly design. This structure not only makes the oxygen circulation in the battery more smoothly, but also ensures that the AGM battery has excellent large current discharge performance and better life span.In a gel battery, the viscosity of the gel electrolyte is much greater than that of dilute sulfuric acid, so if the assembly is too tight, it is not conducive to the gel electrolyte entering the pole group. Therefore, the assembly of the pole group is relatively loose. The separator used is usually a microporous plastic separator containing ribs to facilitate the gel electrolyte to enter the pole group and the inside of the separator. The separator of the gel battery mainly serves to isolate the positive and negative plates. The gel battery itself is developed on the basis of the rich liquid battery, and basically maintains the characteristics of the original rich liquid battery, and there is no strict requirement for the assembly pressure of the battery pole group. In the gel battery, due to the loose requirements for the assembly of the pole group, the distance between the positive and negative plates is relatively large, and the ion conduction distance in the battery is long, so the internal resistance of the gel battery is usually large, which is more suitable for medium current and small. When the current is discharged, the large current performance of the battery is relatively poor. V AGM vs. Gel Batteries: Oxygen Cycle In VRLA batteries, oxygen is transferred from the positive electrode to the negative electrode, where it is compounded. According to the principle of oxygen circulation, the recombination of oxygen at the negative electrode mainly occurs at this three-phase interface. There are two ways of oxygen transmission: one is vertical transmission, that is, the oxygen generated by the positive electrode first moves to the periphery of the pole group, and then reaches the negative electrode plate. The second is horizontal transmission, that is, the oxygen generated by the positive plate directly penetrates the separator to reach the negative electrode. In VRLA batteries, the gas channel that generates oxygen circulation not only occurs in the separator between the positive and negative plates, but also occurs in the outer space of the pole group. In AGM sealed batteries, the gas generated from the positive electrode needs to grow from small bubbles to larger bubbles at the end of charging or during the float charging process. As the bubbles continue to grow, they expand into the AGM separator, and the sulfuric acid electrolyte in the large pores in the separator is discharged to form a gas channel, and oxygen is transferred from the positive electrode to the negative electrode.Figure 10. VRLA BatteryTherefore, only when the oxygen pressure generated by the positive electrode reaches a certain level, a number of oxygen channels will be formed in the AGM separator. After the gas is transferred to the negative electrode, it is absorbed by the negative electrode, and the discharged sulfuric acid liquid will reoccupy the gas channel in the AGM separator until the bubbles generated on the surface of the positive electrode grow again to form a gas channel. Therefore, in the AGM battery, the gas passage from the positive electrode through the separator to the negative electrode may be unstable or discontinuous. In the AGM battery, due to the fact that after the sulfuric acid electrolyte is added to the separator, the assembly pressure is greatly reduced, and the surface of the electrode plate and the separator is uneven, so that there is always a relatively large gap between the electrode plate and the separator. The direct transmission of oxygen from the positive electrode to the negative electrode is difficult, so in AGM batteries, a considerable amount of oxygen is transferred vertically. Since the pore size of the polar plate is smaller than that of the AGM separator, more electrolyte is retained in the polar plate. The lead and negative electrodes on the side plates of the battery pole group are not covered with colloids, etc., and it is easy to form a three-phase interface of gas, liquid, and solid. In the AGM battery, the reaction between lead and anode and oxygen not only occurs on the surface between the positive and negative plates, but a considerable amount of oxygen circulation also occurs on the negative plates outside the pole group. The rapid recombination of oxygen on the side panel of the pole group also makes the total pressure of the gas chamber inside the battery lower than that of the gel battery. It is reported that stiffening strips on the inner wall of the battery tank can greatly increase the efficiency of oxygen circulation.Figure 11. AGM BatteryIn the study of the gel battery, it was found that in the gel battery, with the extension of the use time and the formation of micro-cracks in the colloid, the total gas chamber pressure in the gel battery is higher than the total gas chamber pressure of the AGM battery at equilibrium, vertical oxygen transmission in the direction is suppressed. In the gel battery, with the extension of use time, the silicone gel will dry crack, forming fine cracks, thereby forming a channel for oxygen to be transferred from the positive electrode to the negative electrode. In a gel battery in normal operation, since both the positive and negative plates are covered with gel, the oxygen compound reaction rate on the negative plate on the side of the pole group is extremely low. The compound reaction of oxygen on the negative electrode mainly occurs on the negative electrode plate corresponding to the positive electrode plate. That is, horizontal transmission is mainly used. Furthermore, in the gel battery, the electrolyte saturation has an important influence on the oxygen transmission mode. When the saturation is higher than 91.5%, the transmission mode is mainly vertical transmission; when the saturation is lower than 91.5%, mainly horizontal transmission. In the oxygen cycle of the gel battery, the transmission of oxygen in the vertical direction is slower than in the AGM battery; Compared with the AGM battery, the gel battery is more conducive to the horizontal transmission of oxygen. In the gel battery, since it is a gas channel formed by dry cracking of the gel, the gas transmission channel is basically stable. VI AGM vs. Gel Batteries: CostThe cost of gel batteries is higher than that of AGM batteries in terms of equipment, separators, and materials:First, the cost of equippment. In the production of gel batteries, not only the equipment for glue distribution but also the special equipment for glue filling is needed. Due to the use of gel electrolyte, the gelation phenomenon may occur due to the high viscosity of the gel electrolyte, so the production process control requirements are completely different from the production process of the AGM battery, the process is more complicated, and the technology is difficult to master.Second, the cost of separators. The gel battery uses a microporous plastic separator, which requires high porosity, good strength, and thin thickness. The cost of a high-quality microporous separator is relatively high. For AGM batteries, the separator is made of ultra-fine glass fiber, and the manufacturing process is relatively simple and the cost is low.Third, the cost of materials. The design margin of the electrolyte of the gel battery is generally larger. Not only does it increase the silicone gel material, it also requires more sulfuric acid electrolyte. The total weight of sulfuric acid electrolyte and silica gel is heavier and the material cost is higher. Therefore, the overall cost of the gel battery is high. As for AGM battery, the production process is relatively simple, the process is better controlled, and the battery is lighter, so the cost is lower than gel battery.Figure 12. AGM vs. Gel Batteries: CostVII ConclusionFrom the foregoing comparative analysis, it can be seen that AGM batteries and gel batteries are two types of batteries manufactured using different design ideas. For AGM batteries, AGM separators are used to fix the electrolyte, which is generally designed with a lean electrolyte and a tight assembly structure, which makes the battery lighter and has better large current discharge performance. Due to the low amount of acid, high-density sulfuric acid is required. The life span of AGM batteries is relatively short, and the manufacturing cost is relatively low.For the gel battery, it adopts a rich-liquid design, the amount of sulfuric acid electrolyte used is large, the density of sulfuric acid is relatively rare, the battery performance is more stable, the life span is longer, and the manufacturing cost is higher. VIII AGM vs.Gel Batteries QuizFigure 13. Quiz1. What is a gel battery?A gel battery (often referred to as a gel cell battery) is a lead-acid battery that is valve regulated. When the electrolyte is mixed with sulphuric acid and silica, it becomes a relatively stationary gel substance. 2. What is better AGM or gel battery?AGM batteries are comparably cheaper than Gel batteries, but they present a longer life span and offer bigger bursts of amps when needed. These batteries work best in high-power usage, such as sports vehicles. 3. What are the advantages of a gel battery? These types of batteries will operate effectively between an incredible -40 degrees Fahrenheit and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, their gel make-up makes them better able to withstand corrosion, shock, and vibration. Slower discharging for a longer lifespan. 4. Is AGM a gel battery?AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) and gel batteries are both examples of VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead-Acid) batteries. ... In common parlance, the term gel battery is used to indicate both AGM and Gel batteries. AGM batteries may also be called “membrane”, “starved electrolyte” or “dry” batteries. 5. Is an AGM battery worth the extra money?Definitely worth the price. The biggest perk is they hold their charge. You can charge it in the fall, come spring it's still 100% charged. I know mine has lasted quite a bit longer than my old lead batteries…that said, I never spent the money on lead then I now do on AGMS.

The Basic Introduction to Light-emitting Diode

I IntroductionThe light-emitting diode is a commonly used light-emitting device, which emits energy through the recombination of electrons and holes. It is widely used in the field of lighting. Light-emitting diodes can efficiently convert electrical energy into light energy. Light-emitting diodes have a wide range of uses in modern society, such as lighting, flat panel displays, and medical devices.Light Emitting Diode (LED) Working PrincipleThis kind of electronic component appeared as early as 1962. In the early days, it could only emit low brightness red light. Later, other versions of monochromatic light were developed. The light that can be emitted today has spread to visible light, infrared light, and ultraviolet light. Initially,  the light-emitting diodes were used as indicator lights, display panels, etc. With the continuous progress of technology, light-emitting diodes have been widely used in displays and lighting.CatalogI IntroductionII Parameters of Light-emitting Diode2.1 Significance of Limit Parameters2.2 Significance of Electrical ParametersIII Working Principle of Light-emitting DiodeIV Types of Light-emitting DiodeV Materials of a Light-emitting Diode5.1 Wafer5.2 Bracket5.3 Silver glue 5.4 Gold wire 5.5 Epoxy resinVI Applications of Light-emitting Diode6.1 Display Screen and Communication Signal Display6.2 Automotive Industry6.3 LCD Backlight6.4 LED Lighting6.5 Other ApplicationsVII Trends of LED Lighting TechnologyII Parameters of Light-emitting Diode2.1 Significance of Limit Parameters(1) Allowable power consumption Pm: the maximum value of the product of the forward DC voltage applied to both ends of the LED and the current flowing through it. If this value is exceeded, the LED becomes hot and damaged.(2) Maximum forward DC current IFm: the maximum forward DC current allowed to be added. Exceeding this value can damage the diode.(3) Maximum reverse voltage VRm: the maximum reverse voltage allowed to be applied. Above this value, the light-emitting diode may be damaged by the breakdown.(4) Working environment topm: the ambient temperature range where the LED can work normally. Below or above this temperature range, the light-emitting diode will not work properly and the efficiency is greatly reduced.2.2 Significance of Electrical Parameters(1) Spectral distribution and peak wavelength: the light emitted by a certain light-emitting diode is not a single wavelength, and its wavelength is generally shown in Figure.Figure 1. Spectral Distribution and Peak WavelengthIt can be seen from the figure that the light intensity of a certain wavelength λ0 in the light emitted by the light-emitting tube is the largest, and this wavelength is the peak wavelength.(2) Luminous intensity IV: The luminous intensity of the light-emitting diode usually refers to the luminous intensity in the direction of the normal. When the radiation intensity in this direction is (1/683) W / sr, it emits 1 candela (symbol cd). Since the general LED has a low luminous intensity, the luminous intensity is usually measured in candela (mcd).(3) Spectral half-width Δλ: It represents the spectral purity of the light-emitting tube. It refers to the interval between the two wavelengths corresponding to the 1/2 peak light intensity in Figure 3.(4) Half value angle θ1 / 2 and viewing angle: θ1 / 2 refers to the angle between the direction in which the luminous intensity value is half of the axial intensity value and the luminous axis (normal direction). Two times the half-value angle is the viewing angle (or half-power angle).Figure 2. Angle Distribution of Luminous Intensity of the LEDFigure above shows the angular distribution of the luminous intensity of two different types of LEDs. The coordinates of the perpendicular (normal) AO are the relative luminous intensity (ie, the ratio of the luminous intensity to the maximum luminous intensity). Obviously, the relative luminous intensity in the normal direction is 1. The larger the angle away from the normal direction, the smaller the relative luminous intensity. From this graph, the half-value angle or viewing angle value can be obtained.(5) Forward working current If: It refers to the forward current value when the light-emitting diode is normally emitting light. In actual use, the IF should be selected below 0.6·IFm.(6) Forward working voltage VF: The working voltage given in the parameter table is obtained under a given forward current. Generally measured at IF = 20mA. The forward working voltage VF of the light-emitting diode is 1.4 ~ 3V. When the outside temperature increases, VF will decrease.(7) V-I characteristics: The relationship between the voltage and current of the light-emitting diode can be represented in the figure below.Figure 3. The Relationship between the Voltage and Current of the LEDWhen the forward voltage is less than a certain value (called a threshold), the current is extremely small and does not emit light. When the voltage exceeds a certain value, the forward current increases rapidly with the voltage and emits light. From the V-I curve, parameters such as the forward voltage, reverse current, and reverse voltage of the light-emitting tube can be obtained. The forward leakage current IR of the LED tube is less than 10μA.III Working Principle of Light-emitting DiodeThe core part of the light-emitting diode is a wafer composed of a P-type semiconductor and an N-type semiconductor. There is a transition layer between the P-type semiconductor and the N-type semiconductor, called a PN junction. In the PN junction of some semiconductor materials, the injected minority carriers and majority carriers will release excess energy. The energy is in the form of light, thereby directly converting electrical energy into light energy. The reverse voltage is added to the PN junction. Minority carriers are difficult to inject, so they do not emit light. This kind of diode is called a light-emitting diode, commonly known as LED. When it is in the forward working state (that is, the forward voltage is applied to both ends), and when the current flows from the anode to the cathode of the LED, the semiconductor crystal emits light of different colors from ultraviolet to infrared. The intensity of the light is related to the current. The principle of light-emitting diode needs to be analyzed from the following three situations:When no voltage is applied across the diode, the electrons in the N-type material will move along the PN junction between the layers. The electrons fill the holes in the P-type material and form a depletion region. In the depletion region, the semiconductor material returns to its original insulation state. That is, all holes are filled, so there is neither free electrons nor space for electrons to move in the depletion region, and the charge cannot flow.Figure 4. No Voltage is Applied Across the DiodeWhen a forward voltage is applied to the light-emitting diode, the holes injected from the P region to the N region. And the electrons injected from the N region into the P region within a few microns near the PN junction. They recombine with electrons in the N region and holes in the P region respectively. Therefore, they produce spontaneously emitted fluorescence. Different semiconductor materials have different energy states for electrons and holes. The more energy released, the shorter the wavelength of the emitted light. Diodes that emit red, green, or yellow light are commonly used.Figure 5. Apply a Forward Voltage to the LEDWhen a reverse voltage is applied to the light-emitting diode, the P-type terminal is connected to the negative electrode of the circuit, and the N-type terminal is connected to the positive electrode. And the current will not flow. Negatively charged electrons in N-type materials will be attracted to the positive electrode. Positively charged holes in P-type materials will be attracted to the negative electrode. Since holes and electrons move in the wrong direction. No current will flow through the PN junction, and the depletion region will also expand.Figure 6. According to the materials used, there are gallium phosphide (GaP) light-emitting diodes, phosphorous gallium arsenide (GaAsP) light-emitting diodes, gallium arsenide (GaAs) light-emitting diodes, phosphorous indium gallium arsenide (GaAsInP) light-emitting diodes and gallium arsenide aluminide (GaAlAs) light-emitting diodes.According to its packaging structure and packaging form, there are metal packaging, ceramic packaging, plastic packaging, resin packaging, and leadless surface packaging. It can also be divided into additive color scattering package (D), colorless scattering package (W), colored transparent packaging (C), and colorless transparent packaging (T).Figure 7. Kinds of Light-emitting DiodeAccording to its package shape, it can be divided into circular, square, rectangular, triangular, and combined shapes. The figure shows the shape of several light-emitting diodes.Plastic light-emitting diodes are divided into red, amber, yellow, orange, light blue, green, black, white, transparent, and colorless according to the color of the tube body. The outer diameter of the round light-emitting diode is from ¢ 2 to ¢ 20mm. According to the light-emitting color of the light-emitting diodes, it can also be colored light and infrared light. Colored lights include red light, yellow light, orange light, green light, and so on. In addition, light-emitting diodes can be divided into ordinary monochrome light-emitting diodes, high-brightness light-emitting diodes, ultra-high-brightness light-emitting diodes, color-changing light-emitting diodes, flashing light-emitting diodes, voltage-controlled light-emitting diodes, infrared light-emitting diodes, and negative resistance light-emitting diodes.V Materials of a Light-emitting DiodeWafer, bracket, silver glue, gold wire, and epoxy resin are the five LED raw materials of light-emitting diode5.1 WaferThe structure of the wafer: it consists of a gold pad, P-pole, N-pole, PN junction, and a back gold layer (the double-pad wafer has no back gold layer). The wafer is composed of P-layer semiconductor elements and N-layer semiconductor elements. They are rearranged and combined by electron movement. It is this change that enables the wafer to be in a relatively stable state. When the positive electrode is applied to the wafer with a certain voltage, the holes in the positive P region will continue to swim toward the N region. And the electrons in the N region will move to the P region relative to the holes. While the electrons and holes move relatively, the electron holes pair with each other, exciting photons and generating light energy. The main classification of wafer: surface-emitting type: most of the light is emitted from the surface of the wafer. Five-sided light-emitting type: there is more light emitted on the surface and side.5.2 BracketThe structure of the bracket is 1 layer of iron, 1 layer of copper (good conductivity, fast heat dissipation), 1 layer of nickel (anti-oxidation), 1 layer of silver (good reflectivity, easy to solder wire)5.3 Silver glue Take H20E as an example. Silver glue is also called white glue, milky white. The role of silver glue is to conduct and bond materials (baking temperature: 100°C / 1.5H). Storage conditions: Silver glue manufacturers generally store silver glue at -40°C, and application units generally at -5°C. Single-agent is 25°C / 1 year (dry, ventilated place), mixed agent 25°C / 72 hours. Baking conditions: 150°C / 1.5H. Stirring conditions: Mix for 15 minutes in one direction.5.4 Gold wire Take φ1.0mil as an example. The gold wires used for LEDs are φ1.0mil and φ1.2mil. The material of the gold wire is generally 99.9% of the gold content of the gold wire for LED. The purpose of the gold wire: with its characteristics such as high gold content, soft, easy to deform, good conductivity and good heat dissipation, a closed circuit is formed between the wafer and the bracket. (Conversion relationship: 1 mil = 0.0254mm, 1 in = 25.4mm)5.5 Epoxy Resin Ttake EP400 as an example. Composition: A and B two parts: Glue A: it is the main agent, which consists of epoxy resin + defoamer + heat resistance agent + thinner. Agent B: it is a curing agent, consisting of acid, mold release agent, and accelerator.VI Applications of Light-emitting Diode6.1 Display Screen and Communication Signal DisplayLED lamp has the characteristics of shock resistance, fast light response, power-saving, and long life, etc. It is widely used in various indoor and outdoor displays. It is divided into full-color, three-color, and monochrome displays that are developed and produced by more than 100 units nationwide. Traffic lights mainly use ultra-high-brightness red, green, and yellow LEDs. Because LED lights are energy-saving and reliable, the traffic lights are gradually being replaced throughout the country and the speed of promotion is fast.Figure 8. Traffic Lights6.2 Automotive IndustryAutomotive lamps include dashboards, audio indicators, backlights for switches, reading lights and external brake lights, tail lights, sidelights, and headlights. Incandescent lamps for automobiles are not resistant to shock that require frequent replacement. Due to the fast response speed of the LED, the driver can be reminded of the brakes early to reduce the rear-end accident. In developed countries, the central rear high-position brake light made of LED has become a standard part of the car. The LED car tail light model launched by the American HP company in 1996 Groups can be combined into various car taillights at will. In addition, the light sources in the car dashboard and other various lighting parts can be used as ultra-high brightness light-emitting lamps. In recent years, an annual output value of 1 billion yuan will be formed, and within 5 years, an annual output value of 3 billion yuan will be formed.Figure 9. Automotive Headlight6.3 LCD BacklightLED backlights are most noticeable with high-efficiency side-emitting backlights. As an LCD backlight application, LEDs have the characteristics of long life, high luminous efficiency, no interference, and high-cost performance. They have been widely used in electronic watches, mobile phones, BP, computers, electronic calculators, and credit card machines. With the increasing miniaturization of portable electronic products, the LED backlight has more advantages.  The backlights manufacturing technology will be developed to thinner, low power consumption, and uniformity. LED is the key device of a mobile phone. An ordinary mobile phone needs about 10 LED devices, while a color screen and a mobile phone with camera function need to use about 20 LED devices. At present, the amount of mobile phone backlight is very large. 3.5 billion LED chips are used a year.6.4 LED Lighting  Early lighting products have low luminous efficiency. The light intensity can only reach a few to dozens of mcd, which is suitable for indoor occasions, such as home appliances, instrumentation, communication equipment, microcomputers, and toys. At present, the direct goal is to replace incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps with LED light sources. This substitution trend has started to develop from local application fields. To save energy, Japan is planning to replace the incandescent light-emitting diode project (called "illuminate Japan"). The budget for the first five years is 5 billion yen. If LED replaces half of the incandescent and fluorescent lamps, the annual savings can be equivalent to the energy of 6 billion liters of crude oil. That is equivalent to the power generation of five 1.35 × 106kW nuclear power plants. It can reduce the production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases and improve the living environment.6.5 Other ApplicationsFigure 10. LED Christmas LightsOther applications such as a kind of flash shoes popular with children, the built-in LED will flash when walking; the power indicator of electric toothbrushes; the popular LED Christmas lights. Due to the novel shape, rich colors, unbreakable and low-voltage safety Sexuality, LED Christmas light is generally welcomed by people. It is threatening and replacing the existing Christmas market of electric bulbs.VII Trends of LED Lighting Technology1. The mainstream light source of lighting will be converted to LED. At present, the luminous efficiency of high-power led commercial products has reached more than 150lm / W. The life span has reached more than 30,000 hours. The comprehensive performance of LEDs has exceeded other light sources. At the same time, in addition to large power, the price of LED lamps is close to lamps composed of other light sources. Therefore, LED already has certain advantages. At the same time, the light efficiency of LED laboratory products has reached more than 300lm / W. Through a reasonable heat dissipation design, the life span of more than 50,000 hours can be fully achieved. In principle, there is not much room for other light sources to improve light efficiency and life. Therefore, it can be expected that LED becoming the mainstream light source in the lighting market.2. The research of LED device technology will mainly focus on the improvement of green LED efficiency. The core device of semiconductor technology-LED, currently the red LED and the blue LED has high photoelectric efficiency, but the photoelectric efficiency of the green LED is very low. This limits the substantial application of LED spectral flexibility. Therefore, improving the light efficiency of green LEDs is the most important research topic of LED devices.3. Another study of LED technology will be the study of narrow-spectrum LED devices. The narrow spectral width of a single LED will help to truly achieve unlimited flexibility in assembling the LED spectrum. At the same time, one of the main applications of LEDs at present-LED displays, if the spectral width of monochromatic LEDs can be reduced, a larger color gamut space can be achieved.4. White LEDs for general lighting will gradually shift to RGB mode. The light sources used for general lighting are presented in the form of white light or near-white light. At present, the most comprehensive and cost-effective white LEDs on the market are also implemented by blue LEDs and YAG phosphors. However, the RGB method has higher light efficiency. It will enable the lamp to be dimmed, toned, and even adjusted the color rendering index. Therefore, with the improvement of green LED light efficiency, it is believed that the RGB method (further extended to 3 or more monochromatic LED mixed colors) will become the mainstream white LED mode.5. The characterization of the color rendering of the light source will be a long-term debate. The characterization in the form of the spectrum may be the ultimate result. The current parameter that characterizes the color rendering of the light source is the color rendering index. However, this is based on the limited spectral form of traditional light sources. The infinite flexibility of the LED spectrum will make this characterization problematic. It can be predicted that if the LED achieves true spectrum unlimited flexibility. Any single-parameter color rendering will actually be flawed, and the ultimate characterization method should be the spectrum itself.6. The application of light sources will include two basic aspects of visual applications and non-visual applications. The flexibility of LEDs in spectral assembly makes it possible to achieve various visual and non-visual optimized applications through spectral assemblies, such as agricultural lighting, medical lighting, LED Visible light communication, etc. But relatively speaking,  in the non-visual field, there are still many problems to be solved, including what kind of lighting conditions are optimized, the price of LED needs to be further reduced. The former is a scientific problem, while the latter is an industrialization problem.7. Lighting technology will be deeply integrated with information technology to create smart lighting. As a semiconductor device, LED is a good physical carrier of information technology because LED is easy to control plus the relevance of lamps and human life. Therefore, LED can be deeply integrated with information technology, and smart lighting will be born. This will be an important development direction for future LED lighting technology.8. The appearance of the lamps and lanterns will have great innovation potential. At present, most LED lamps and lanterns include LED bulbs, LED downlights, LED tubes, etc., all of which are designed to cater to people's consumption habits. Whether this is the best mechanical form of the lamp or not remains to be studied. At least, there is a lot of room for innovation in the future mechanical form of LED lamps.9. OLED will occupy an important position in the display field. Relative to LEDs that emit light similar to point light sources, OLEDs emit light in the form of surface light sources. Therefore, after LED occupies the vast majority of lighting applications in the future, OLED still has certain advantages in the display field.10. Natural lighting will be valued. In recent years, energy-saving lighting, health lighting, and ecological lighting have received great attention. The use of sunlight to achieve lighting naturally becomes the best choice. Therefore, with the advancement of technology, natural light lighting will receive more and more attention.Due to the great flexibility of LEDs in the three dimensions of scale, spectrum, and time, many innovative applications and concepts may be born in the future of LED development. This is the development trend of lighting based on artificial light sources. At the same time, as people continue to deepen the concept of green environmental protection, natural lighting will also get greater development. Frequently Asked Questions about Light-emitting Diode Tutorial1. What does light emitting diode mean?In the simplest terms, a light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits light when an electric current is passed through it. Light is produced when the particles that carry the current (known as electrons and holes) combine together within the semiconductor material. 2. What is a light emitting diode used for?Light emitting diodes, commonly called LEDs, are real unsung heroes in the electronics world. They do many different jobs in all kinds of devices. They form numbers on digital clocks, transmit information from remote controls, light up watches and tell you when your appliances are turned on. 3. What type of light does LED emit?LED lighting differs from incandescent and fluorescent in several ways. When designed well, LED lighting is more efficient, versatile, and lasts longer. LEDs are “directional” light sources, which means they emit light in a specific direction, unlike incandescent and CFL, which emit light and heat in all directions. 4. Why are LED lights so bright?LED lights are so bright because they have a high lumen/watt score. ... This is an enormous difference between the levels of light you are getting from each bulb and because the LED bulb is so much higher there is no way that you would need to replace a 40W incandescent bulb with the equivalent Watt in a LED. 5. What is the difference between diode and LED?The most significant difference between the LED and diode is that the LED emits the light while the diode allows the current to flow only in one direction and opposes the flow in the opposite direction. 6. What is the basic principle of LED?Working Principle: A light-emitting diode is a two-lead semiconductor light source. It is a p–n junction diode that emits light when activated. When a suitable voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. 7. Do LED lights give off UVB?Some in the lighting business have stated that LEDs do not produce UV radiation. However studies have shown that standard LEDs do create a small amount of UV. That said, the amount of UV they actually emit is even less. This is due to the phosphors within an LED lamp that convert the Ultraviolet light to white light. 8. What are the two basic types of LEDs?The two basic types of LEDs are indicator-type LEDs and illuminator-type LEDs. Indicator-type LEDs are usually inexpensive, low-power LEDs suitable for use only as indicator lights in panel displays and electronic devices, or instrument illumination in cars and computers. 9. What is LED and its advantages?Safety is perhaps the most often overlooked advantage when it comes to LED lighting. The number one hazard when it comes to lighting is the emission of heat. LEDs emit almost no forward heat while traditional bulbs like incandescents convert more than 90% of the total energy used to power them directly into heat. 10. What is the O in OLED?Organic contrastOLED stands for organic light-emitting diode. Each pixel in an OLED display is made of a material that glows when you jab it with electricity.
