Tunable Semiconductor Lasers: Advantages, Applications, Types, and Working Principle

Overview: This article describes the advantages, applications, and types of tunable semiconductor lasers. It explores how these lasers can be finely tuned to emit specific wavelengths, offering essential precision and control for various applications. What are tunable semiconductor lasers?A semiconductor laser that can be adjusted to emit wavelength within a specific range is known as a tunable laser. Several methods can change the semiconductor substance's optical characteristics to accomplish this tuning. The greatest advantage of the tunable laser is that in managing various applications, tunable lasers can replace 80 or 160 pieces of equipment with a few lasers. Additionally, tunable lasers open up the possibility for various services and allow for the easy remote addition or deletion of bandwidth without the need for a service expert. Advantages of Tunable Semiconductor laserAll these lasers provide greater advantages for a wide range of applications in the scientific and academic fields. They haveExtremely monochromatic and continuous beamImproved Power and Wavelength StabilityMinimal power consumptionSuperior efficiencyCompact sizeAffordable Tunable Semiconductor Laser TypesPrimary types of semiconductor lasers can be broadly classified based on their structural characteristics.Distributed feedback semiconductor lasers (DFBs)External cavity semiconductor lasers (ECLs)Distributed Bragg reflector semiconductor lasers (DBRs)Super-Structure Grating Distributed Bragg Reflector (SSG-DBR)Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) Distributed Feedback Semiconductor Lasers (DFBs)Distributed Feedback (DFB) lasers, as depicted in Fig. 1, are a particular kind of laser in which a diffraction grating or periodically structured element is located throughout the length of an active medium. A periodic arrangement called a grating allows certain wavelengths of light to flow through while reflecting others. It can operate in a single longitudinal mode and is less sensitive to changes in temperature. It generates signals with a single frequency and has a high modulation speed.  In DFB, the temperature of the laser cavity is a critical factor in determining the tuning wavelength. A single DFB laser cavity can only tune across a narrow range of wavelengths, usually less than 5 nm. Thus, several laser cavities are used in DFB lasers for extensive tuning ranges. External Cavity Semiconductor Lasers (ECLs)External cavity lasers comprise a laser diode and other external optical components within a large optical cavity. The optical components include reflective mirrors or lenses and diffraction grating. Using reflective mirrors, light is reflected back into the laser diode. A grating, or other wavelength-selective elements, are adjusted to regulate the laser output with the desired wavelength. Employing the external cavity with optical components enables efficient management of the laser's wavelength, linewidth, and output power. They have wide tuning ranges, which are more than 40 nm. Whereas they have relatively slow tuning speeds. Distributed Bragg Reflector Semiconductor Lasers (DBRs)A DBR laser usually consists of one or more Bragg reflectors that function as mirrors at the ends and an active medium where light is amplified, as shown in Fig. 2. Bragg reflectors have a periodic structure composed of several layers of alternating materials with differing refractive indices. They are wavelength-selective and reflect particular light wavelengths.  DBR lasers are much more stable in terms of output frequency. It enables the production of a single, steady wavelength of light. This selective reflection is essential to the laser's functioning. DBR lasers are widely used in many industries, including telecommunications, sensing, medical diagnostics, scientific research, etc., because of their consistent output and accurate wavelength control. Super-Structure Grating Distributed Bragg Reflector (SSG-DBR)One unique design in tunable semiconductor laser structures is the Super-Structure Grating Distributed Bragg Reflector (SSG-DBR). The laser typically comprises three parts:Active sectionGrating sectionPhase section The active region comprises a semiconductor material like InP/InGaAsP with electrons in a high energy state, which is responsible for stimulated emission and amplification of light. The superstructure grating that makes up the grating section allows for wavelength-selective reflection. Typically, this is achieved through many layers of dielectric materials that exhibit periodic structure. Two superstructure gratings, placed at the ends of the chip, enable it to be tuned over a wavelength range of about 40 nm. The phase section controls the laser's output wavelength, which adjusts the phase of the laser. The device exhibits numerous advantages, such asImproved flexibility and speed in wavelength switchingRapid tuning speed in the range of millisecondsSteady and high-power laser outputImproved wavelength tuning The wavelength of the emitted laser is mainly based on the current flow. The active region's current can be changed to fine-tune the optical gain and power to vary the output light's strength and intensity. The refractive index changes during the tuning process by introducing different currents into the grating section, resulting in a coarse wavelength adjustment. The phase section's current input variation enables accurate refractive index tuning. The multi-electrode tuning mechanism, where simultaneous grating and phase section tuning occurs, provides high-resolution wavelength tuning output. This specific laser chip is widely used in various fiber optic grating sensing devices. This laser can be extensively used in monitoring temperature, pressure, displacement, temperature, vibration, stress, and deformation. These applications, such as sensing and real-time monitoring devices, can be broadly employed in various domains listed below.Safety observation of expressways, high-speed railroads, and rail transportation networks.Structural safety alerts for large-scale structures like bridges and tunnels.Safety in wind power generationPower transmission networksOil industriesCoal mining Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs)All of the semiconductor lasers that were previously discussed emit light from the edges and are commonly referred to as edge-emitting devices. In contrast, the VCSEL laser, as seen in Fig. 3, emits light from the top surface of the device, where light is reflected up and down in a vertical direction due to mirrors reflecting on its top and bottom surfaces.  Unlike traditional edge-emitting lasers, (VCSELs) are a semiconductor laser diode that emits light perpendicular to the surface of the wafer. VCSELs are well-known for their high efficiency, circular beam output, and lower production costs. Summarizing the Key PointsTunable semiconductor lasers offer precise wavelength control, stability, and accuracy, making them essential in telecommunications, medical diagnostics, and scientific research.Compact, portable, and energy-efficient, tunable semiconductor lasers are versatile tools used in scientific research, academia, and industry for precise and continuous laser beams. This article provides insights into the working principles behind tunable semiconductor lasers, understanding how they can replace multiple pieces of equipment with their versatile capabilities. It highlights the practical applications of these lasers, showcasing their role in fiber optic grating sensing devices for monitoring temperature, pressure, displacement, vibration, and more. ReferenceKong, Ling, Wenjie Lv, Haijing He, Yibo Yuan, and Libin Du. “Design of Control Circuit for Tunable Semiconductor Laser for Fiber Sensing.” Hardware 1, no. 1 (November 24, 2023): 4–28. https://doi.org/10.3390/hardware1010003.Zhang, Linyu, Xuan Li, Wei Luo, Junce Shi, Kangxun Sun, Meiye Qiu, Zhaoxuan Zheng, et al. “Review of 1.55 Μm Waveband Integrated External Cavity Tunable Diode Lasers.” Photonics 10, no. 11 (November 20, 2023): 1287. https://doi.org/10.3390/photonics10111287.nptelhrd. “Semiconductor Laser - III Single Frequency Lasers.” YouTube, October 4, 2013. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqEHjTxNUe0.Bruce, Elizabeth. “Tunable Lasers.” IEEE Spectrum, February 9, 2023. https://spectrum.ieee.org/tunable-lasers.

LASER and Semiconductor Laser: Working Principles and Impact in Modern Applications

Overview: This article examines the fundamental concepts of absorption, stimulated emission, and the intricate working principles of lasers, it also highlights semiconductor lasers and discusses their transformative power across various technologies. Lasers are devices that provide precision to a great extent, making them valuable in various domains such as medicine, manufacturing, communication, and entertainment. From the precise cutting of materials to the delicate surgeries that restore vision, lasers have become an integral part of the technological infrastructure. Understanding the Basic ConceptsAbsorptionAbsorption is a process in which an electron in a lower energy state is excited by a photon of light and jumps to a higher energy state. For absorption, the photon's energy must be equal to the energy difference between the lower and higher energy states, neither less nor more. This process is the initial step toward achieving laser action, which is diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 1 Fig. 1 Illustration of absorption. Source: Rakesh Kumar, Ph.D. Stimulated EmissionStimulated emission happens when an excited atom in the higher energy state reacts with an incoming photon and descends to a lower energy state, giving off a second photon in the process. The emitted photon’s frequency, phase, polarization, and direction are the same as the incoming photon of light, as shown in Fig. 2. This step is very important and allows for the coherent amplification of light in a laser. Fig. 2 Illustration of stimulated emission. Source: Rakesh Kumar, Ph.D. Active mediumIt can be a gas, liquid, solid, or semiconductor that contains atoms or molecules that can be excited to higher energy levels, as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 Illustration of laser with active medium and optical cavity. Source: Rakesh Kumar, Ph.D.  Optical CavityAs illustrated in Fig. 3, the active medium is placed between two mirrors, forming an optical cavity. One mirror is fully reflective, while the other is partially reflective. The optical cavity allows light to bounce back and forth, amplifying it.Pumping MechanismThere are several ways to supply energy for a laser, including electrical current, flash lamps, or another light source. The pumping mechanism aims to excite the atoms to a higher energy state. When more atoms are in an excited state than in their ground state, it is known as a population inversion. What is a laser?Lasers are devices that emit powerful, highly collimated, monochromatic, and coherent beams of light, as seen in Fig. 4. The acronym is Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Fig. 4 Comparison of non-coherent and coherent beams of light produced by LED and LASER, respectively. Source: Rakesh Kumar, Ph.D. How does the laser work?A laser is produced when an active medium with abnormally many high-energy electrons placed in an optical cavity is pumped, emitting photons. The cavity acts as a resonator and reflects emitted photons back and forth within the active medium, stimulating more excited atoms to emit photons. This initiates cascaded stimulated emission, amplifying light and stimulating laser emission. The working principle is demonstrated in Fig. 5 Fig. 5 Diagrammatic illustration of working principles of laser. Source: Rakesh Kumar, Ph.D. What is a semiconductor laser?A wide variety of applications commonly use semiconductor lasers. They are made using semiconductor material. The most commonly used active mediums are indium phosphide or gallium arsenide. Usually, they operate in the 1310-nm or 1550-nm region of the spectrum. Semiconductor lasers are compact and have a greater degree of accuracy. Various methods are employed to create optical cavities in semiconductor lasers.CleavingMirrorDiffraction gratingCleavingThe semiconductor material is cleaved and polished on its edges to form mirrors. In contrast, the other method makes use of mirrors or diffraction gratings.Diffraction gratingIt comprises two dielectric materials layered in alternating order, each with a different refractive index. The main role is to reflect some light wavelengths while permitting others to pass through. Laser output can be tuned to the desired wavelength with the help of diffraction gratings, which are effective for selectively reflecting or transmitting light of particular wavelengths.Factors that Determine the Wavelength of Output LaserThe wavelength of the output laser is based on the following parametersThe length of the optical cavity, i.e., the distance between two reflective mirrorsTemperature inside the active mediumThe refractive index of the active mediumInjected electric currentApplicationsThese lasers are especially useful for applications likeSpectroscopyOptical communicationsWavelength division multiplexingEnvironmental sensingGrating demodulationMedical diagnosticsOptical communicationOptical fibers, which have a far higher data capacity than conventional copper cables, transfer data using lasers. It is defined as Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). This procedure is a crucial component of the infrastructure supporting various applications.Environmental sensing and grating demodulationOptical fiber sensing is a technology that measures changes in the physical characteristics of light and efficiently demodulates or decodes the data to determine the extent of the changes brought about by external stimuli. These optical fiber properties are crucial for a variety of sensing applications. There are several ways to demodulate light parameters, but using a tunable semiconductor laser is the most crucial and successful one. Demodulating such signals and accurately identifying the degree of changes requires a tunable laser with a large tuning range, excellent stability, and precise linewidth. Tunable lasers are an indispensable element and are widely utilized in several fields, including air, temperature, pressure, position, biomedical sensors, etc.,Medical diagnosticsLasers provide a wide range of medical applications. What are Fiber Optic Sensing and Fiber Bragg Grating?

Overview: The article overviews fiber optic sensing technology, discusses principles and sensor classifications, highlights the concept of Bragg reflectors and Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors, and discusses their applications in various domains. Fiber optic sensing technology in engineering has grown significantly and marks substantial progress in the measuring and monitoring domains. What is an optical fiber? It is a versatile medium for light transmission. Optic fiber, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises,Core: Thinner than human hair and transmits light signalsCladding: Confines the light inside the coreCoating: Made of silica or plasticFig. 1: Cross section of optic fiberFiber Optic SensingUsing optical fibers, fiber optic sensing is a method that monitors changes in pressure, temperature, strain, and other characteristics. It works by measuring the degree to which intrinsic light parameters are modulated by external environmental factors that impact the way light waves move through optical fibers. It can function as single-mode fiber or multimode fiber.Principles of Optic Fibers SensingTotal internal reflection is the principle by which optic fibers work. When light is coming from a denser medium into a rarer (less dense) medium, it is reflected back into the original medium if the angle of incidence of the light is smaller than the critical angle. The reflected light is then analyzed to determine its physical properties. The optical fiber experiences variations in temperature, pressure, and strain, which can alter its electromagnetic wave characteristics like amplitude, frequency, phase, and polarization. The pivotal role of optic fiber sensors is decoding, or demodulating, and determining the level of pressure, strain, and temperature that is being applied to the fiber, as shown in Fig. 2. This facilitates the sensing of different physical quantities in the immediate surroundings. These core features of optical fiber and cable make them useful for addressing various issues in the real world.Fig. 2 Diagrammatic illustration of optic fibers sensing technology AdvantagesCompared to conventional sensing methods, optical fiber sensors provide several benefits. These advantages include:Remain unaffected by high temperatures, strain, and pressureThe capacity to multiplex several sensors along a single fiberResistance to electromagnetic interferencesEasily available componentsNon-destructiveCompact sizeNon-invasiveClassification of Optical Fibers SensorsFiber-optic sensors can be classified asIntrinsic sensorsExtrinsic sensorsIntrinsic SensorIntrinsic sensor sensing happens inside the optical fiber itself. Fiber indicates the variations caused by external stimuli by measuring the level of changes in the light's internal characteristics, like wavelength, polarization, intensity, phase, and transit time. There are several uses for intrinsic sensors, including measurement of temperature, pressure, strain, and other applications. Large-scale distributed sensing is something they can offer, which is very helpful for applications that need to monitor across vast distances or in difficult circumstances.Extrinsic SensorWhen sensing occurs outside the optical fiber, it is called an extrinsic sensor. The optical fiber in these sensors serves as a channel for light to go and come from the external sensing device. After exiting the fiber cable, the light beam interacts with the object being measured and is carried by optic fiber to a photodetector, which detects the changes in light. What is grating?Generally, a grating is any regularly spaced group of parallel, elongated, almost similar fragments. What is a Bragg reflector?A Bragg reflector, as shown in Fig. 3, is a form of optical reflector that is commonly utilized in optical fibers and many laser applications. It is made up of two separate dielectric materials layered in alternating order, each with a different refractive index. The Bragg reflector's main role is to reflect some light wavelengths while permitting others to pass through.Fig. 3: Illustration of Fiber Bragg Grating Fiber Bragg GratingIn the field of optical engineering, a particular kind of grating is called Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG). A brief section of optical fiber is used to create a distributed Bragg reflector, which transmits all other light wavelengths while reflecting specific ones. This is accomplished by giving regular fluctuations in the refractive index of the optic fiber. FBGs are employed in wavelength-specific sensing applications to block certain wavelengths. The reflected wavelength is also referred to as the Bragg wavelength.Interrogation TechniquesThe important step in FBG sensors is finding the shift in the Bragg wavelength that reflects the change in the physical parameter. Various methods of inquiry have been devised to precisely and effectively demodulate the Bragg wavelength shifts. The following are some essential methods:Spectrometer-Based Interrogation TechniqueFBG sensor wavelength interrogation is done using an optical spectrum analyzer. OSAs are precision instruments and essential tools in environmental sensing. However, they are costly, which makes them less attractive for certain functions.Tunable Laser-Based InterrogationWhen examining FBG sensors, a laser with adjustable wavelengths is used to scan the reflected Bragg wavelength from the FBG. This technique is known as tunable laser-based interrogation. The intensity of the reflected light is tracked. An observable peak in reflected intensity occurs when the laser wavelength and the Bragg wavelength coincide. The precise location of this peak makes it possible to measure the physical modifications that resulted in the shift in the Bragg wavelength. Tunable laser-based interrogation devices can be costly and difficult despite their advantages.Matched Edge Filter ConfigurationThis technique uses matching edge filter interrogation, which can be an affordable way to do sensing without compromising measurement precision.Application of FBG SensorsFBG sensors have a wide variety of applications in various domains, including:EnergyWind turbinesSolar panelNuclear plantsElectrical equipmentOilMedical and BiotechPhysiological parameter monitoring includes cardiac activity, respiratory activity, etc.Invasive surgeryStructural Health MonitoringStrain and defect detector in civil structureElectrical instrumentsTransportationAerospaceRailwaysShipSpacePerimeter sensingSecurityMilitaryGeotechnical monitoringLandslideSeismic activity In conclusion, the evolution of fiber optic sensing technology has significantly enhanced monitoring and measurement capabilities across various industries. Bragg reflectors and interrogation methods like tunable laser-based methods have improved as sensor types, and Fiber Bragg Grating sensors have found more uses in the energy, medical, transportation, and structural health monitoring fields. These innovations underscore the importance of fiber optic sensing in enabling precise and reliable data collection for critical operations, paving the way for further advancements in the field of optical fiber sensing. Summarizing the Key PointsFiber optic sensing technology offers precise monitoring of pressure, temperature, and strain using optical fibers, revolutionizing measurement capabilities in various industries.Sensor classifications include intrinsic and extrinsic sensors, each serving distinct purposes in detecting external stimuli within or outside the optical fiber.Bragg reflectors, such as Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors, utilize regular refractive index fluctuations to reflect specific wavelengths, enabling wavelength-specific sensing applications. These fiber optic sensing technology advancements have diverse applications in the energy, medical, transportation, and security sectors, enhancing monitoring and measurement efficiency in real-world scenarios. ReferencePendão, Cristiano, and Ivo Silva. “Optical Fiber Sensors and Sensing Networks: Overview of the Main Principles and Applications.” Sensors 22, no. 19 (October 5, 2022): 7554. https://doi.org/10.3390/s22197554.Kersey, A.D., M.A. Davis, H.J. What is Laser Displacement Sensor? Basic Overview

Introduction The laser displacement sensor is a device that uses laser technology for measuring. It consists of a laser, a laser detector and a measuring circuit. It is a new type of measuring instrument. For example, it can accurately measure the position and displacement of a object in a non-contact method. The laser has the excellent characteristics of good straightness, so the same laser displacement sensor has higher accuracy than the known ultrasonic sensor. However, the laser generating device is relatively complex and large in size. Therefore the application range of the laser displacement sensor is strict. Catalog Introduction Ⅰ Basic Working Principle 1.1 Measurement Objects 1.2 Measurement Methods Ⅱ Measurement Applications in Product Line Ⅲ Laser Displacement Sensors Advantages Ⅳ Alternative Types of Laser Displacement Sensor Ⅴ Laser Displacement Sensors Suppliers Ⅵ FAQ Ⅰ Basic Working Principle 1.1 Measurement Objects The laser beam emitted by the laser diode is irradiated to the surface of the object to be measured, and the reflected light passes through a set of lenses and is projected onto the photosensitive element matrix. The photosensitive part can be a CCD(charge-coupled device), CMOS(complimentary metal oxide semiconductor) or a PSD(position-sensitive detector) element. And the intensity of the reflected light depends on the surface characteristics of the measured object. The laser displacement sensor can also measure thickness, vibration, distance, diameter and other geometric quantities of the detected object. displacement sensor working state" width="294" height="222" /> Figure 1. Laser Displacement Sensor Working State 1.2 Measurement Methods According to the measurement principle, there are laser triangulation method and laser echo analysis method. The former method is generally suitable for high-precision and short-distance measurement, while the latter method is used for long-distance measurement. The following are the details of there methods.🔺Triangulation MethodThe simplest triangular displacement measurement system is to emit a beam of light from the light source to the surface of the object, and observe the position of the reflection point through imaging in the other direction, so that the displacement of the object can be detected. Since the incident and reflected light form a triangle, this method is called triangulation. According to the relationship between the angle between the incident light and the surface of the object to be measured, it can be divided into direct type and inclined type. The light emitted by the laser, after being focused by the condenser lens, is vertically incident on the surface of the measured object, and the movement of the object or the surface change causes the incident light spot to move along the incident optical axis. Receive the scattered light from the incident point of the lens and image it on the sensitive surface of the position detector (such as PSD, CDD) of the light spot. However, the laser beam of the sensor is perpendicular to the measured surface. So there is only one accurate focus position, and the images at the other positions are in different degrees of high focus state. In addition, high focus will cause the dispersion of the image point, thereby reducing the measuring accuracy. Figure 2. Light Path (direct-injection type) In order to improve accuracy, θ1 and θ2 must meet: tgθ1=Utgθ2In the formula, U is the lateral magnification. At this time, the side points within a certain depth of field can be imaged on the detector in focus to ensure accuracy. If the displacement of the light spot on the imaging surface is x', using the proportional relationship between the sides of similar triangles. The displacement of the measured surface can be obtained according to the following formula: In the formula, α is the distance from the intersection of the laser beam optical axis and the receiving optical axis to the front main surface of the receiving lens, and b is the distance from the rear main surface of the receiving lens to the center point of the imaging surface. θ1 is the angle between the optical axis of the laser beam and the optical axis of the receiving lens, and θ2 is the angle between the measured normal line and the optical axis of the receiving lens. Figure 3. Light Path (inclined type) The light emitted by the laser is incident on the measured surface at a certain angle with the normal direction of the measured surface, and the scattered light or reflected light of the measured surface of the light spot is also received by the receiving lens. The conditions should be satisfied at: tg(θ1+θ2)=Utgθ3If the image of the light spot moves x'on the sensitive surface of the detector, using the proportional relationship of similar triangles, the moving distance of the object surface along the normal direction is: Where, θ1 is the angle between the optical axis of the laser beam and the normal of the measured surface. θ2 is the angle between the optical axis of the imaging lens and the normal of the measured surface. θ3 is the angle between the optical axis of the detector and the optical axis of the imaging lens. The laser transmitter shoots the visible red laser light to the surface of the object to be measured through the lens. The laser light scattered by the surface of the object passes through the receiver lens and is received by the internal CCD linear camera. According to different distances, the camera can be set at different angles to trace this light spot. Based on this angle and the known distance between the laser and the camera, the digital signal processor can calculate the distance between the sensor and the measured object. And meanwhile, the position of the light beam at the receiving element is processed by analog and digital circuits, and the corresponding output value is calculated by the microprocessor analysis. Finally, the standard data signal is output proportionally in the analog window set by the user. If the switch output is used, it will be turned on within the set window and turned off outside the window. In addition, the analog quantity and the switch quantity output can set up the detection window independently. The maximum linearity of the laser displacement sensor adopting the triangulation method can reach 1um, and the resolution can reach the level of 0.1um. For example, the ZLDS100 type sensor can achieve high resolution of 0.01%, high linearity of 0.1%, high response of 9.4KHz, and can adapt to harsh environments. 🔺The Echo AnalysisThe laser displacement sensor uses the principle of echo analysis to measure the distance to achieve a certain degree of accuracy. The inside of the sensor is composed of a processor unit, an echo processing unit, a laser transmitter, and a laser receiver. The laser displacement sensor emits one million laser pulses per second through the laser transmitter to the detection object and returns to the receiver. The processor calculates the time required for the laser pulse to meet the detection object and return to the receiver to calculate the distance. The output value is the average output of thousands of measurement results. It is measured by the so-called pulse time method. The laser echo analysis method is suitable for long-distance detection, but the measurement accuracy is lower than that of the laser triangulation method, and the farthest detection distance can reach 250m. Figure 4. Laser Displacement Sensor Application Ⅱ Measurement Applications in Product Line Laser displacement sensors are often used to measure physical quantities such as length, distance, vibration, speed, and orientation, and can also be used for flaw detection and atmospheric pollutant monitoring.1) Size determinationPosition identification of small parts, monitoring of the presence of parts on the conveyor belt, detection of material overlap and coverage, control of the robot position (tool center position), device status, device position (through small holes), liquid level monitoring, thickness measurement, vibration analysis, crash test measurement, automobile related test, etc.2) Thickness Measurement of Metal Flakes and Thin PlatesThe laser sensor measures the thickness of a thin metal sheet (thin plate). Detection of changes in thickness can help find wrinkles, small holes or overlaps to avoid machine malfunctions.3) Simultaneous MeasurementGetting more values includes angle, length, inner and outer diameter eccentricity, conicity, concentricity and surface profile.4) Stuff Length MeasurementPut the measured stuff on the conveyor belt at the designated position, the laser sensor detects the it and measures it simultaneously with the triggered laser scanner, and finally obtains the length.5) Inspection of UniformityPlace several laser sensors in a row in the tilt direction of the workpiece to be measured, and directly output the measurement value through one sensor. In addition, you can also use a software to calculate the measurement value and read the result according to the signal or data.6) Inspection of Electronic ComponentsUse two laser scanners to place the component under test between them, and finally read the data through the sensor to detect the accuracy and completeness of the component size.7) Inspection of Filling Level on the Production LineThe laser sensor is integrated into the manufacturing of the filling product. When the product passes the sensor, it can be detected whether it is full. The sensor uses the extended program of the laser beam reflection surface to accurately identify whether the filling product is qualified and the quantity of the product.8) Measuring the Straightness of the ObjectFirst, 2-3 laser displacement sensors are needed to perform combined measurement. Then install them on a straight line parallel to the production line, and determine the distance between the three laser displacement sensors according to the measurement accuracy you need. Finally, you need to make this object move in a direction parallel to the installation line. When the production line and the sensor installation line are parallel, the greater the difference between the distances measured by the three sensors, the worse the straightness of the object, and the smaller the difference between the distances measured by the three sensors, indicating the straightness of the object. A straightness percentage can be established based on the length of the object and the distance between the three sensors, so as to obtain a quantified signal output, which has got the quantified signal output of detecting the object straightness. Figure 5. Light Receiver of Laser Displacement Sensor Ⅲ Laser Displacement Sensors Advantages 1) High Resolution and RepeatabilityEven in a larger working range, the sensor can still maintain a higher resolution and repeatability.2) Stable PerformanceThe sensor is less affected by the material and surface characteristics of the measured object, and it can directly measure the highly reflective, diffuse reflective and rough surfaces of different materials without spraying developer powder (Except for a few special materials).3) Measurement of Holes and Complex Geometric SurfacesThe coaxiality of the laser sensor enables high-precision measurement of deep holes, narrow slots, grooves and blind holes.4) Large Measurable AngleThe maximum measurable angle range of the laser sensor is 170° (±85°) in space. This technology enables the sensor to truly restore every minute detail of the complex surface of the measured object without causing any damage to the measured object.   Ⅳ Alternative Types of Laser Displacement Sensor 1) Eddy Current Displacement SensorResolution: The maximum resolution of the eddy current sensor can reach 0.1um, which is basically equivalent to the laser displacement sensor.Linearity: The linearity of the eddy current sensor is generally low, about 1% of the range, and the high-end laser displacement sensor is generally 0.1%.Measurement Conditions: The eddy current sensor requires the measured object to be a conductor and non-magnetic, that is, a non-magnetic conductor, such as aluminum, copper, etc., The laser displacement sensor is suitable for whether the measured object is magnetic or conductive. There are intersections between the two.2) Capacitive Displacement SensorThe accuracy of capacitive displacement sensors is very higher than laser displacement sensors, but the range of them is very small and generally less than 1mm, and the range of laser displacement sensors can be up to 2m.3) Fiber Optical Displacement SensorThe measurement principle of the fiber optical displacement sensor is measuring the change of the light flux and light intensity reflected on the surface of the object due to the displacement. And the probe is composed of two parts: a transmitting fiber and a receiving fiber. For the displacement and vibration of small objects, the conventional non-contact displacement sensor is limited by the reflection area and the measuring result is not ideal, while the optical fiber displacement sensor can be made into a very small probe (minimum 0.2mm diameter). What’s more, it can also be made into a form of linear transmission and reception. The displacement value can be calculated by measuring the degree of obstruction of the optical fiber during the displacement process. The accuracy can reach 0.01um, and the range can be up to 4mm. The laser distance sensors of the LDM301 series use a measured time-of-flight principle to measure distances of 300 m for natural surfaces and 3,000 m for reflective surfaces. 7. What are the different laser sensors? The different types of laser sensors include charge-coupled devices (CCD), complimentary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS), position-sensitive detectors (PSD), and photoelectric sensors. 8. How do laser position sensors work? The laser emits a laser beam to the target as shown above. The light reflected off the target is concentrated by the receiver lens and forms an image on the light receiving element. When the distance changes, the concentrated light reflects at a different angle and the position of the image changes accordingly. 9. How can sensors be used to detect objects?Ultrasonic sensors use sound waves to detect objects. Most ultrasonic sensors detect objects and measure distance by listening for the return echo of an emitted sound wave reflecting off of a target or background condition. 10. How do position sensors work?In Hall-effect position sensors, a moving part is linked to a magnet housed with a sensor shaft thereby forming a Hall element. With the movement of the body or its part the magnet also moves which leads to the formation of magnetic field and hence Hall voltage.

The Best Tech Guide to Laser Diodes in 2021

What is a Laser Diode?A laser diode (injection laser diode, or diode laser) is a semiconductor device that can generate laser light, emitting a narrow light containing a single color, which is similar to a light-emitting diode (LED). The three conditions for generating laser light are: achieving particle number inversion, meeting threshold conditions and resonance conditions. Since laser diodes are extremely electrostatic sensitive, they should be used with care to prevent static electricity. They can be divided into homojunction laser, single heterojunction (SH) laser, double heterojunction (DH) laser and quantum well (QW) laser according to the different PN junction materials.Topics Covered in this GuideLaser Diode Tech Guide in 2021What is a Laser Diode?Laser Diode SpecificationsLaser Diode CharacteristicsLaser Diode ApplicationsHow Does a Laser Diode Work? What is the Laser Diode Symbol? What are the types of Laser Diode?Laser Diode Using TipsHow to Test a Laser Diode? How to Make a Laser Diode? How to Power a Laser Diode? How to Build a Laser Diode Driver Circuit? How to Wire a Laser Diode? How to Select the Right Laser Diode? How to Drive Pulse Laser Diode? What is Power Source of 532 Laser Diode? What is the Difference between Laser Diode(LD) and LED?What is the Wavelength Range of a Laser Diode? Is Diode Laser Permanent? Is LED a Laser Light? How Long do Diode Lasers Last? Can an LED be Used as a Laser? What are the Advantages of Using Laser Diode Instead of an LED?What is the Disadvantage of Laser?FAQsLaser Diode Specifications(1) Wavelength– It is the laser tube working wavelength, including 635nm, 650nm, 670nm, 690nm, 780nm, 810nm, 860nm, 980nm, etc, used for photoelectric switch laser.(2) Threshold Current– The current at which the laser tube starts to generate laser oscillation. For general low-power laser tubes, the value is about tens of mA, and the threshold current of laser tubes with multi-quantum well structure can be as low as 10mA or less.(3) Operating Current– It is the drive current that laser tube to achieve the rated output power, which is more important for the design and commissioning of the laser drive circuit.(4) Vertical Divergence Angle– It is the open angle that the laser diode's light-emitting band in the direction of the vertical PN junction, generally in the 15˚ ~ 40˚ or so.(5) Horizontal Divergence Angle– It is open angle that the laser diode's light-emitting band in the parallel direction with the PN junction, generally in 6˚ ~ 10˚ or so.(6) Monitoring Current– It is the current flowing on the PIN tube when the laser tube is at rated output power. Laser Diode CharacteristicsThe basic structure of the semiconductor laser diode is shown in the figure. A pair of parallel planes perpendicular to the PN junction surface form the Fabry-Perot resonant cavity, they can be the solution surface of the semiconductor crystal, but also can be polished plane. The remaining two sides are relatively rough to eliminate the laser action in other directions than the main direction. In addition, lasers consist of three main components: a lasing medium (solid, liquid or gas), a stimulating energy source (pump) and an optical resonator.Figure 1. Semiconductor Laser Diode StructureOne of the characteristics of laser diodes is the ability to modulate the intensity of their output light directly from current. Because the relationship between output optical power and input current is mostly linear, laser diodes can use analog or digital current to directly modulate the output light intensity, no need for expensive modulators, which makes the diode more economical to use.The most important characteristic of a diode is its unidirectional conductivity, and laser diodes, as one of the diode types, have the same features. In a circuit, current can only flow in from the positive terminal of the diode and out from the negative terminal. The following are specific descriptions.1) Forward FeatureIn electronic circuits, the diode conducts when the positive terminal of the diode is connected to the high potential terminal and the negative terminal to the low potential terminal. In terms of this connection, it called forward bias. In addition, when the forward voltage applied to both ends of the diode is very small, the diode still cannot conduct and the forward current flowing through is very small. Only when the forward voltage reaches a certain value (this value is called the "threshold voltage", about 0.2V for germanium tubes and 0.6V for silicon tubes), the diode can conduct. After it, the voltage across the diode remains basically unchanged (about 0.3V for germanium and 0.7V for silicon diode), which is called the "forward voltage drop".2) Reverse FeatureIn electronic circuits, the positive terminal of the diode is connected to the low potential terminal, and the negative terminal is connected to the high potential terminal. When there is almost no current flowing through the tube, the diode is in the cutoff state. This connection called reverse bias. Diode in reverse bias, there will still be a weak reverse current flow through, called leakage current. When the reverse voltage across the diode increases to a certain value, the reverse current will increase sharply, the diode will lose its unidirectional conductive characteristics, this state is called diode breakdown. Laser diode injection current must be greater than the critical current density, which is related to the temperature of the contact surface and indirectly affects the tube performance, to meet the residence reversal conditions and emit laser. When operating at high temperatures, the critical current increases, reducing efficiency and even damaging the component. Laser Diode ApplicationsAs the most common type of laser products, laser diodes have the advantages of high efficiency, small size and long life, but their low output power (generally less than 2mW), poor linearity and monochromaticity are not good for cable TV system applications, because they cannot transmit multi-channel and high-performance analog signals. Based on the advantages of laser diodes, they play a important role in many applications areas. For example, in the return module of bi-directional optical receivers, uplink transmission generally uses quantum well laser diodes as the light source. Also it is widely used in the computer on the CD-ROM drive, laser printer in the print head, bar code scanner, laser ranging, laser medical, optical communications, laser indication and other small power optoelectronic equipment. The lighting, laser surgery, laser welding and laser weapons and other high-power equipment have laser diodes too.Compared with LEDs, With different light source, lasers are more powerful and operate at faster speeds than LEDs, and they can also transmit light farther with fewer errors. They are also much more expensive than LEDs.Figure 2. Laser DiodeHow Does a Laser Diode Work?Light Emitting PrincipleLight emission in semiconductors is usually caused by carrier complexation. When a positive voltage is applied to the PN junction, it will weaken the PN junction barrier, forcing electrons to be injected into the P region from the N region, and holes to be injected into the N region from the P region. These non-equilibrium electrons and holes injected near the PN junction will be compounded, thus emitting photons of wavelength λ with the following equation.λ=hc/EgWhere: h - Planck's constant, c - speed of light, Eg - band gap width of the semiconductor. The above luminescence phenomenon due to the spontaneous compounding of electrons and holes is called spontaneous radiation. When the spontaneous radiation generated by the photon through the semiconductor, once the electron-hole pair has been emitted near, it can excite the two composite to generate new photons. This photon has been induced to excite the carrier compound and issued a new photon known as excited radiation. If the injection current is large enough, a carrier distribution opposite to the thermal equilibrium state will be formed, that is, the particle number reversal. When the carrier within the active layer in the case of a large number of inversion, a small amount of spontaneous radiation generated by the photons due to the resonant cavity two end reflect and then have induction radiation, resulting in frequency-selective resonance positive feedback, or a gain for a frequency. When the gain is greater than the absorption loss, a coherent light with good spectral lines can be issued from the PN junction, that is, the laser. How Laser Diodes Work?As for Laser diode light-emitting principle, the P-N junction in a laser diode is formed by two doped GaAs layers. It has two flat-ended structures, parallel to a end (highly reflective surface) and a partial reflection. Laser diodes emit coherent light in which all the waves are at the same frequency and phase. The wavelength of the light to be emitted is exactly related to the length of the junction. When the P-N junction is forward biased by an external voltage, the electrons move through the junction and recombine as in a normal diode. When the electrons are compounded with holes, photons are released. These photons hit the atoms, causing more photons to be released. As the forward bias current increases, more electrons enter the depletion region and cause more photons to be emitted. Eventually, some of the photons randomly drifting in the depletion region strike the reflecting surface vertically, thus reflecting back along their original path. The reflected photons are again reflected back from the other end of the junction. This movement of photons from one end to the other is continuous several times. During the photon motion, more atoms release more photons due to the avalanche effect. This process of reflection and production of more and more photons produces a very intense laser beam. Each photon produced in the emission process explained above is identical to the other photons in terms of energy level, phase relationship and frequency. Thus, the emission process gives a laser beam of a single wavelength. To produce a laser beam, the current in the laser diode must be made to exceed a certain threshold level. Currents below the threshold level force the diode to behave as an LED, emitting incoherent light. What is the Laser Diode Symbol? The laser diode symbol used is often the same one used for light emitting diodes in circuit diagrams. It uses the basic semiconductor diode symbol with arrows indicating the generation and emanation of light.Figure 3. Laser Diode Symbol What are the types of Laser Diode? There are several types of laser diodes:✔️Quantum well lasers✔️Quantum cascade lasers✔️External-cavity diode lasers✔️Interband cascade lasers✔️Separate confinement heterostructure lasers✔️DHL (double heterostructure lasers)✔️DFB-LD (distributed feedback laser diode)✔️DBR-LD (distributed bragg reflector laser)✔️FBG (FBG laser diodes laser diodes)✔️VCSEL ( vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser)✔️VECSEL(vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting-laser)✔️MOEMS-LD (micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems laser diode) Laser Diode Using Tips1) laser diode emitted laser light may cause harm to the human eyes. When using, don’t directly watch the light source. It requires warning signs.2) The device needs a suitable drive power supply, the instantaneous reverse current should not exceed 2uA, and the reverse voltage should not exceed 3V. In the power supply on and off, to prevent inrush current. When testing the drive circuit with an oscilloscope, disconnect the power supply and then connect the oscilloscope probe, if the probe is tested under power on, the inrush current may damage the device.3) The device should be stored or worked in a clean environment.4) Working at higher temperatures will increase the threshold current, lower conversion frequency and accelerate the aging of the device. When adjusting the amount of light input, use the optical power meter to detect to prevent exceeding the large rated output.5) The output power works higher than the specified parameters, which will accelerate the aging of the components. The following measures can be taken to slow down device aging.    a. Driving the laser diode with a DC constant current source.    b. Connect a current limiting resistor in series with a bypass capacitor to the laser diode circuit.    c. Since an increase in the temperature of the laser diode will increase the current flowing through it, the heat dissipation measures must be applied to ensure that the device operates within a certain temperature range.(4) To avoid the laser diode breakdown due to withstand excessive reverse voltage, it can be connected in reverse parallel on both ends of the fast silicon diode.(6) The machine needs to be fully dissipated or used under cooling conditions to prevent high temperature use. The output wavelength of the laser is affected by the operating current and heat dissipation, to maintain good heat dissipation conditions and reduce the temperature of the tube core when working.7) Diodes are electrostatic sensitive devices, to take appropriate anti-static measures.Figure 4. Injection Laser DiodeHow to Test a Laser Diode?a. Resistance measurement methodRemove the laser diode, use a multimeter R × 1k or R × 10k file to measure its positive and negative resistances. If normal, the forward resistance value is between 20~40kΩ, and the reverse resistance value is ∞ (infinity). If the measured forward resistance value has exceeded 50kΩ, it means that the performance of the laser diode has declined. If the measured forward resistance value is greater than 90kΩ, it means that the diode has been seriously aged, can no longer be used.b. Current measurement methodUse a multimeter to measure the voltage drop across the load resistor in the laser diode drive circuit, and then estimate the current value flowing through the tube according to Ohm's law. When the current exceeds 100mA, if the laser power potentiometer is adjusted, and no significant change in current, the laser diode can be judged to be seriously aged. If the current increases sharply and out of control, it means that the optical resonant cavity of the laser diode has been damaged.c. Pins DetectionThe laser diode has three pins: LD transmitter, PD receiver, LD-N common1) To distinguish between LD and PD. Use R × 1k block to measure the resistances of laser diode three pins. If a resistance value between the two pins reaches a few thousand ohms, at this time, the black pen is connected to the end of the PD anode, the red pen is connected to the pin for the common terminal, the remaining pin for the LD cathode, so as to distinguish the PD part (bc part of the figure) and LD part ( This distinguishes the PD part (bc part of the figure) and the LD part (ab part of the figure).2) Detect the PD part. PD part of the laser diode is essentially a photosensitive diode, using a multimeter test method is as follows: R × 1k block to measure its resistance, if the forward resistance of a few thousand ohms, the reverse resistance is infinite, it initially indicates that the PD part is good. If the forward resistance is 0 or infinity, it shows that the PD part has been bad. If the reverse resistance is not infinity, it means that the PD part has reverse leakage and the tube quality has become poor.3) Detect the LD part. Use the multimeter R × 1k block to measure the forward resistance of the LD part, that is, the black pen connected to the common terminal b, red pen connected to the a, the forward resistance should be between 10kΩ ~ 30kΩ, the reverse resistance should be infinity. If the measured forward resistance value is greater than 55kΩ, the reverse resistance value of 100kΩ or less, indicating that the LD part has been seriously aging, so the use of the effect will become worse. How to Make a Laser Diode?Step 1: Before made a laser diode, you should clear somethings firstly, including safety equipment, procedures, training in place, as well as disposal etc. Step 2: Build a working laser yourself you start with buying the diode. then you need a lens , and a heat sink , and a powersupply that won't blow it (they're very sensitive) .... all these components are on online, and that's quiet a tricky job ...much easier and cheaper to buy an assembled laser.Step 3: Spend a couple of pounds to purchase a laser pointer, and pull the diode & circuit out of that.Step 4: Don't power it up when it's direction is not firmly fixed away from your eyes, from anyone's eyes , and there might be reflective surfaces on the beam path nearby. Pay attention, do it legally where you are. How to Power a Laser Diode?Laser diodes are operated in forward conduction mode within a specified current range that is optimal for lasing operation, because they are current-driven devices. Laser diode power supplies can operate in one of two modes, constant current (CC) and automatic power control (APC). Most, but certainly not all, smaller laser diodes (5.6- and 9-mm packages) are operated in APC mode. For APC operation, the power supply must have a photodiode mounted inside the laser diode package. How to Build a Laser Diode Driver Circuit?Firstly, you should know that a laser diode driver circuit is a circuit which is used to limit the current and then supplies to the laser diode, and then follow the below steps:Step 1: Have a project with laser diode.Step 2: Find out all the useful parts and their parameters from your project.Step 3. Build the circuits according to the related project schematic.Step 4. Connect the Laser Diode and test it. How to Wire a Laser Diode?According to unidirectional conductivity, laser diodes only allow current to flow in one direction, and they're always polarized. First look at the positive and negative poles of the diode, and then the positive potential is connected to the anode of the diode, and the negative potential is connected to the cathode of the diode. How to Select the Right Laser Diode?Choose a laser diode for your application according to the following steps:Step 1: Turn application requirements into laser parametersStep 2: Selecting the laser typeStep 3: Selecting the laser materialStep 4: Make your final chart and go searching How to Drive Pulse Laser Diode?Laser Diode Driver is to provide current to the laser diode. With the amount of current controlled by the user or some automatic apparatus, you can drive a pulse laser diode. In addition, a laser driver can only regulate the current as long as the laser voltage stays within certain limits, so you should have a check the circuit parameters to select a proper diode driver. What is Power Source of 532 Laser Diode?Check the following table to find out the power source of 532 laser diode:532nm Green Laser DiodePowerPackageDescription0.004WTO-Can- Integrated Photodiode- Compact Size0.005WTurn-Key Module- Compact Size- Long Lifetime0.01WTurn-Key Module- Fiber-Coupled Output- Integrated Photodiode0.1WTO-Can- Integrated Photodiode- Compact Size0.2WTO-Can- Integrated Photodiode- Mode-Hop Supression0.4WButterfly- Integrated Photodiode- Integrated Heater0.5WButterfly- Internal Heater- Integrated PhotodiodeWhat is the Difference between Laser Diode(LD) and LED?LDs and LEDs both emit photons to produce light, but both of them have many differences according to the following table:ParametersLDLEDWorking PrincipleStimulated emissionSpontaneous emissionOmnidirectional emissionFull FormLight Amplification by Stimulated Emission of RadiationLight Emitting DiodeResponseFast response in comparison to LEDSlow responseDriving CurrentRanges from 5 to 40mARanges from 50 to 100mANature of Emitted LightCoherent and MonochromaticIncoherent and consists of various colors.Junction Area during ManufacturingNarrow and small JunctionWide Junction AreaBandwidth RangeRanges from 1MHz to 2MHZRange from10 to 50THzPower to light Conversion EfficiencyApprox 70 %Approx 30%Numerical Aperture of the obtained Light BeamExtremely low as compared to LEDs.Higher in LEDsCostHigh cost and thus used in the specific application.Low cost and thus economicalWhat is the Wavelength Range of a Laser Diode?Diode lasers deliver wavelengths ranging from 810 to 1064 nm. Diode lasers are compact and portable solid-state units. They are used strictly for soft tissue procedures and penetrate 2 to 3 mm or more into soft tissue, depending on the wavelength and tissue biotype. Is Diode Laser Permanent?Diode lasers use a single wavelength of light that has a high abruption rate in melanin. As the melanin heats up it destroys the root and blood flow to the follicle disabling the hair growth permanently. ... Diode lasers deliver high frequency, low fluence pulses and can be safely used on all skin types. Is LED a Laser Light?LEDs typically last longer than lasers, while lasers are faster. ... LEDs have a higher output with wider bandwidths, meaning that they can produce a broad range of less-concentrated light. Lasers have a lesser output and a small bandwidth, produced with a tiny pinpoint of light. How Long do Diode Lasers Last?Typical lifetime of laser diode modules are 25,000 to 50,000 hours. If the laser diode temperature continues to rise exceeding the maximum operating temperature, the diode can be catastrophically damaged or the long term performance may degrade significantly. Can an LED be Used as a Laser? The LED and laser emit light in a relatively narrow range of wavelengths. However, lasers put all their energy in a single wavelength, which emits from a tiny spot. LEDs spread the energy over more wavelengths and send that light from a larger spot into wide cone. What are the Advantages of Using Laser Diode Instead of an LED?It produces a very intense beam of light or infrared radiation which is having following properties. Laser diode used in optical fiber systems are made of gallium arsenide phosphide. The laser having size of grain of sand can produce power output of about 10 mWatt. ON/OFF switching speed of laser is faster than LED. What is the Disadvantage of Laser?Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Laser:It is expensive and hence more expenditure to the patients requiring laser based treatments. It is costly to maintain and hence more cost to doctors and hospital management. Increases complexity and duration of the treatment based on laser devices or equipments. FAQs1. Why do we prefer GaAs for laser diode?GaAs advantagesGaAs devices are relatively insensitive to overheating, owing to their wider energy band gap, and they also tend to create less noise (disturbance in an electrical signal) in electronic circuits than silicon devices, especially at high frequencies. 2. What is the advantage of laser over LED?The output power of a 1 watt LED can be < 100 milliwatts. Besides dramatic differences in total output, the laser also offers a significant advantage in terms of how usable that power is to the optical system. Specifically, the laser is a point source of coherent light that produces a well-behaved beam. 3. Why is laser light monochromatic?Monochromatic Laser LightThe light from a laser typically comes from one atomic transition with a single precise wavelength. So the laser light has a single spectral color and is almost the purest monochromatic light available. 4. What happens if the laser diode is forward biased?Forward bias injects charges into the junction, causing spontaneous emission of photons. When the diode is forward-biased, charges are injected into the active area of the junction, while electrons and holes recombine in the junction, creating spontaneous emission of photons. 5. Is a laser diode an LED?Light-emitting diodes (LEDs), like laser diodes, generate radiation via electrical current injection into a junction. LED light comes from spontaneous emission, whereas laser diode light arises from stimulated emission. Thus, LEDs generally have lower output powers and omnidirectional emission.

It has the advantages of wide measurement range, fast temperature measurement, high accuracy and high sensitivity. With the widespread use of infrared thermometers, some users have doubts about its working principle and accuracy. This article will introduce how the infrared thermometer works, and explain its accuracy and the factors that affect it.Figure1. Infrared ThermometerII What is Infrared?Infrared is an electromagnetic wave with a wavelength between microwave and visible light. The wavelength is between 1mm and 760 nanometers (nm), which is invisible light longer than red light. Anything above absolute zero (-273.15°C) can generate infrared rays. Modern physics calls it heat rays. Medical infrared can be divided into 2 categories: near infrared and far infrared. Containing thermal energy, the sun's heat is mainly transmitted to the earth through infrared rays. Infrared is a part of the many invisible rays of the sun's rays. It was discovered by British scientist Herschel in 1800 and is also called infrared thermal radiation. It has a strong thermal effect. He split the sunlight with a prism, and placed thermometers on the ribbons of various colors in an attempt to measure the heating effect of light of various colors. It was found that the thermometer located outside the red light warmed the fastest.  Therefore, it is concluded that in the solar spectrum, there must be invisible light outside the red light, which is infrared. Can also serve as a medium of transmission. The wavelength of infrared light in the solar spectrum is greater than visible light, with a wavelength of 0.75 to 1000 μm. Infrared can be divided into three parts, namely near infrared, with a wavelength between (0.75-1) to (2.5-3) μm; mid-infrared, with a wavelength between (2.5-3) to (25-40) μm; far infrared , The wavelength is between (25-40) ~ l500μm.Figure2. InfraredIII Theoretical Principle of Infrared Temperature MeasurementIn nature, when the temperature of an object is higher than absolute zero, due to the existence of internal thermal movement, it will continuously radiate electromagnetic waves to the surroundings, including infrared rays with a wavelength range of 0.75µm ~ 100µm. Its biggest feature is that at a given temperature and wavelength, the radiant energy emitted by an object has a maximum value.  This substance is called a black body, and its reflection coefficient is set to 1; the reflection coefficient of other substances is less than 1, and is called gray body. Because the black body's spectral radiant power P (λT) meets Planck's law between the absolute temperature T, it shows that at the absolute temperature T, the radiant power of the black body per unit area at the wavelength λ is P (λT). According to this relationship, the relationship curve can be obtained as shown in the figure below: (1) As the temperature increases, the stronger the radiant energy of the object. This is the basis of the theory of infrared radiation and the design basis of a single-band infrared thermometer. (2) As the temperature rises, the radiation peak shifts to the short-wave direction (to the left) and satisfies the Wien shift theorem. The wavelength at the peak is inversely proportional to the absolute temperature T, and the blue curve is the line connecting the peaks. This formula tells us why the high temperature thermometer works mostly in the short wave and the low temperature thermometer works mostly in the long wave. (3) The rate of change of radiant energy with temperature is larger at the short wave than at the long wave, that is, the thermometer working at the short wave has a relatively high signal-to-noise ratio (high sensitivity) and strong anti-interference. This is particularly important at wavelengths, especially for small targets at low temperatures.Figure3. Planck's Law of Blackbody RadiationIV The Working Principle of Infrared ThermometerThe infrared thermometer consists of the optical system, photodetector, signal amplifier, signal processing and display output. The radiation of the measured object and the feedback source is adjusted according to the modulator and input to the infrared detector. The difference between the two signals is amplified by the inverse amplifier and the temperature of the feedback source is controlled so that the spectral radiance of the feedback source is the same as that of the object. The display indicates the brightness temperature of the object being measured. How does an Infrared Thermometer work?V Differences in Accuracy of Different Types of Infrared Thermometers5.1 Three Categories of Infrared ThermometersAccording to different uses and accuracy, infrared thermometers can be roughly divided into medical-grade infrared thermometers, consumer-grade infrared thermometers, and industrial-grade infrared thermometers. Strictly divided, medical-grade infrared thermometers have the highest accuracy requirements. The accuracy needs to be between 0.1 and 0.2 degrees. High-precision infrared ear thermometers can meet the medical-grade temperature standards. However, to avoid cross-infection, hospitals use ear thermometers. One-time sheath is needed for warm guns; consumer grades are next, and accuracy around 0.5 can meet our daily temperature measurement needs. The accuracy is about 0.3 degrees, which belongs to the consumer-grade infrared thermometer; the industrial grade has the lowest, generally the maximum allowable error is more than ± 1 ° C, and the distance is far.5.2 Differences Between Mainstream Infrared ThermometersIn fact, whether it is a medical or industrial infrared thermometer, they use the same principle of receiving infrared waves from the human body, but the object distance ratio has been adjusted differently, and the surface temperature is measured. The normal forehead temperature is about 2-3 ° C lower than the temperature of the armpit, and the forehead is directly affected by the environment. It is for preliminary investigation and reference and cannot be used as a basis for medical diagnosis. In addition, the temperature of the ear and neck will be more stable than the temperature of the forehead and barely affected by the environment. This is one of the reasons why the ear thermometer is more accurate than the forehead.5.3 Infrared Temperature Gun The medical thermometer has been revised by software or the relevant range has been limited by the software before leaving the factory. The emissivity of a normal human body is 0.98 (the thermometer defaults to 0.95), so the measured result is about 34-35 ° C. All infrared products (infrared cameras) can correct the difference by changing the emissivity to 0.8 to avoid inaccurate body temperature when used by non-professionals; and industrial-grade thermometers provide more realistic feedback on temperature measurement. It shows the actual temperature detected.Figure4. Infrared Temperature GunVI Infrared Thermometer Accuracy And Factors Affecting Accuracy6.1 Precision of Infrared ThermometerThe accuracy of contact measurement is about 0.1 degrees. Compared with contact temperature measurement, the accuracy of non-contact temperature measurement is lower. The infrared thermometer with higher accuracy is about 0.2 degrees, and the worse temperature error is 1 degree. Even above 1 degree. In general, the accuracy of infrared thermometers is ± 2 ° C. Today, temperature measurement products such as handheld infrared thermometers on the market are easily affected by measurement distance and ambient temperature, and the measurement error is often around 1 degree.6.2 Factors Affecting The Accuracy of The Infrared Thermometer Measurement6.2.1 EmissivityAll objects reflect, transmit, and emit energy, and only the emitted energy can indicate the object's temperature. When the infrared thermometer measures the surface temperature, the instrument can receive all three kinds of energy. Therefore, all infrared thermometers must be adjusted to read only the emitted energy. Measurement errors are usually caused by infrared energy reflected from other light sources.  Some infrared thermometers can change the emissivity, and emissivity values for many materials can be found in published emissivity tables. Other instruments have a fixed pre-set emissivity of 0.95. The emissivity value is the surface temperature of most organic materials, paints or oxidized surfaces, which is compensated by applying a tape or flat black paint to the measured surface. When the tape or lacquer reaches the same temperature as the base material, measure the temperature of the surface of the tape or lacquer, which is its true temperature.Figure5. Emissivity6.2.2 Ratio of Distance To Light SpotThe optical system of the infrared thermometer collects energy from a circular measurement spot and focuses it on the detector. The optical resolution is defined as the ratio of the distance from the infrared thermometer to the object to the size of the measured spot (D: S). The larger the ratio, the better the resolution of the infrared thermometer and the smaller the spot size to be measured. 6.2.3 Field of ViewMake sure the target is larger than the spot size of the infrared thermometer. The smaller the target, the closer it should be. When accuracy is particularly important, make sure the target is at least 2 times the spot size.Figure6. Field of ViewVII Factors to Consider When Choosing An Infrared Thermometer(1) Temperature rangeThe temperature measurement range is actually the range of the infrared thermometer, and the range of different thermometers will be different. The temperature measurement range is generally -50 ~ 360 ° C, -30 ~ 380 ° C, -18 ~ 280 ° C, -32 ~ 450 ℃, -32 ~ 650 ℃, -32 ~ 1050 ℃, etc., and the range for measuring body temperature is generally 35 ~ 42.5 ℃. You need to choose the appropriate range according to the temperature range of the measured object. (2) Measurement accuracyMeasurement accuracy is the only indicator to ensure the accuracy of the measurement, and it is also a key indicator to determine the performance of the infrared thermometer. Accuracy is usually expressed as ± X ℃ or ± X%. The smaller the value, the higher the accuracy. (3) Display resolutionThe display resolution is the last digit of the temperature display, usually 0.1 ° C or 0.1 ° F. (4) Optical resolutionThe optical resolution is the ratio of the distance D from the thermometer to the target to the diameter S of the measurement spot, that is, the ratio of the distance to the spot diameter D; S, D: S, the greater the accurate temperature measurement distance. In order to obtain accurate temperature readings, the distance between the thermometer and the test target must be within a suitable range. If the pyrometer must be measured away from the target due to environmental conditions, and a small target is to be measured, a pyrometer with high optical resolution should be selected. (5) EmissivityEmissivity is the ratio of the energy radiated by an object at a specific temperature to the energy radiated by an ideal radiator at the same temperature. Different objects have different emissivities. Some infrared thermometers have a fixed emissivity of 0.95, while others are adjustable. The emissivity of the infrared thermometer can be adjusted according to the material of the measured object to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results. (6) Response timeThe response time is the time it takes for the infrared thermometer to reach 95% of its final reading. It represents the speed at which the infrared thermometer responds to changes in the measured temperature. The response time of the new infrared thermometer can even reach 1ms. If the target moves fast or measures a fast-heated target, a fast-responding infrared thermometer should be selected; otherwise, a sufficient signal response cannot be achieved, which will reduce the measurement accuracy.Figure7. Infrared ThermometerVIII How To Make Infrared Thermometers More Accurate(1) Accurately determine the emissivity of the measured object;(2) Avoid the influence of high-temperature objects in the surrounding environment;(3) For transparent materials, the ambient temperature should be lower than the temperature of the measured object;(4) The thermometer should be vertically aligned with the surface of the measured object. Under no circumstances should the angle exceed 30 ° C.(5) Can be applied to the temperature measurement of bright or polished metal surfaces, and cannot be measured through the glass;(6) Correctly follow-off coefficient, the target diameter is full of field of view;(7) If the infrared thermometer is suddenly in a situation where the ambient temperature difference is 20 ° C or higher, the measurement data will be inaccurate, and then take the measured temperature value after the temperature is balanced. IX One Question Related to Infrared Thermometers9.1 QuestionWhat is infrared radiation?A. It's the transfer of energy by electromagnetic wavesB. The radiation given off by radioactive particlesC. Infrared radiation is a type of gasD. It is the reaction that occurs by freezing water9.2 AnswerA X FAQ1. How do you accurately use an infrared thermometer?Keep the Infrared Thermometer Close to the TargetThe Distance-to-spot ratio is the surface area being able to be detected compared to the distance taken from the target. As a rule of thumb, the closer you are to the target, the smaller the measurable surface area is, thus the more accurate the measurement. 2. How does the infrared temperature sensor work? These sensors work by focusing the infrared energy emitted by an object onto one or more photodetectors. These photodetectors convert that energy into an electrical signal, which is proportional to the infrared energy emitted by the object. 3. How accurate are thermal thermometers?Research has shown that, when used correctly, infrared or no-contact thermometers are just as accurate as oral or rectal thermometers. No-contact thermometers are popular among pediatricians, as kids often squirm around when trying to get a temperature read, but it also holds true in mass temperature screenings. 4. What is normal forehead temperature with an infrared thermometer?Normal forehead skin temperature can vary several degrees depending on your environment (indoors or out), exercise, perspiration, direct heat or air conditioning, etc. It would be normal to read an actual forehead skin surface temperature between 91F and 94F if using a general-purpose infrared thermometer. 5. Are infrared thermometers dangerous? As long as the Non-Contact Infrared Thermometers are used properly, they do not represent a risk of possible eye damage, as these Thermometers do not use lasers to measure body heat, the authorized thermometers measure infrared light; therefore they are not dangerous. 6. How far away should you hold an infrared thermometer?Usually, 6 inches is considered the ideal distance for using an infrared thermometer and correctly monitoring the temperature. 7. What is the benefit of using an infrared thermometer?IR thermometers are handy for use in measuring drafts and insulation breakdown. They can pick up hot spots in electrical systems and bearings and help monitor cooling systems. They are even used to measure food storage temperatures and can do this with no cross-contamination. 8. Are digital or infrared thermometers more accurate?Ranging from 0 to 600 Fahrenheit, the best IR Thermometer has a correct accuracy of about ±3.5 Fahrenheit. A digital thermometer could be used in three different ways. The accuracy of each might differ from one another. 9. What are the benefits of a non-contact infrared thermometer?• The non-contact approach may reduce the risk of spreading disease between people being evaluated.• Easy to use.• Easy to clean and disinfect.• Measures temperature and displays a reading rapidly.• Provides the ability to retake a temperature quickly. 10. How do I know if my digital thermometer is accurate?Add a little clean water until the glass is full and stir. Wait for about three minutes before inserting the sensor on the thermometer into the ice-filled water. Wait for about thirty seconds and check that the thermometer reads 32°F. If it does, then it is accurate, but if not, it requires calibration.
