Product Overview

The L6472 device, realized in analog mixed signal technology, is an advanced fully integrated solution suitable for driving two-phase bipolar stepper motors with microstepping. It integrates a dual low RDS(on) DMOS full bridge with all of the power switches equipped with an accurate onchip current sensing circuitry suitable for non dissipative current control and overcurrent protection. Thanks to a new current control, a 1/16 microstepping is achieved through an adaptive decay mode which outperforms traditional implementations. The digital control core can generate user defined motion profiles with acceleration, deceleration, speed or target position, easily programmed through a dedicated register set.

All application commands and data registers, including those used to set analog values (i.e.: current control value, current protection trip point, deadtime, etc.) are sent through a standard 5-Mbit/s SPI.

A very rich set of protections (thermal, low bus voltage, overcurrent) makes the L6472 device “bullet proof”, as required by the most demanding motor control applications.

L6472HTR Video Description: This video describes full stepping, half-stepping and microstepping in stepper motor drivers. We will also show what the current waveform looks like for each type.

L6472HTR Manufacturer

STMicroelectronics is a French-Italian multinational electronics and semiconductors manufacturer headquartered in Plan-les-Ouates near Geneva, Switzerland. The company resulted from the merger of two government-owned semiconductor companies in 1987: "Thomson Semiconducteurs" of France and "SGS Microelettronica" of Italy. It is commonly called "ST", and it is Europe's largest semiconductor chip maker based on revenue. While STMicroelectronics corporate headquarters and the headquarters for  EMEA region are based in the Canton of Geneva, the holding company, STMicroelectronics N.V. is incorporated in the Netherlands.

L6472HTR FAQ

What is a microstepping driver?

Microstepping is driving a stepper motor at less the one full step per movement. Under usual operating conditions, a stepper motor operates by turning one full step with every pulse of current. A microstepping drive does not send a full pulse of current to the stepper motor to make it move.

What is the motor driver?

Motor drivers acts as an interface between the motors and the control circuits. So the function of motor drivers is to take a low-current control signal and then turn it into a higher-current signal that can drive a motor.

What is the difference between a motor driver and a motor controller?

Motor Driver VS Motor Controller

The main difference between a motor controller and a motor driver is, the motor controller is responsible for the controlling speed, torque, the direction of the motor whereas a motor driver is responsible to provide enough electrical power to the motor as per requirement.
