BNO055 Orientation Sensor: Datasheet, Adafruit, Pinout [Video&FAQ]

  • Contents

Product Overview

The BNO055 is a System in Package (SiP), integrating a triaxial 14-bit accelerometer, a triaxial 16-bit gyroscope with a range of ±2000 degrees per second, a triaxial geomagnetic sensor and a 32-bit cortex M0+ microcontroller running Bosch Sensortec sensor fusion software, in a single package.

The corresponding chip-sets are integrated into one single 28-pin LGA 3.8mm x 5.2mm x 1.1 mm housing. For optimum system integration the BNO055 is equipped with digital bidirectional I2C and UART interfaces. The I2C interface can be programmed to run with the HID-I2C protocol turning the BNO055 into a plug-and-play sensor hub  solution for devices running the Windows 8.0 or 8.1 operating system.

This blog will introduce BNO055 systematically from its features, pinout to its specifications, applications, also including BNO055 datasheet and so much more.

Video: Setting up the BNO055 Absolute Orientation Sensor | Automatic Addison

BNO055 Video Description: In this video, we'll set up the Adafruit BNO055 Absolute Orientation Sensor from scratch, step-by-step.

The BNO055 is actually three sensors in one device. It includes an accelerometer to measure acceleration forces, a gyroscope that uses Earth's gravity to help determine orientation, and a magnetometer that measures magnetism.

BNO055 Features

  • Includes all sensors, sensor hub and optimized software
  • Low power consumption, supports various power modes for switching sensors on and off and algorithm modules to speed code development
  • Advanced 9-axis sensor fusion algorithms
  • Fast background calibration of all sensors and calibration monitor while in use
  • Enhanced magnetic distortion detection and suppression
  • Real-time motion tracking due to built-in group delay compensation
  • Gyroscope drift cancellation
  • Supports multiple operating mode, i.e. 6-axis based applications (inertial measurement Units)

BNO055 Components

  • 3-axis accelerometer (14Bit)
  • 3-axis gyroscope (16Bit)
  • 3-axis geomagnetic sensor
  • 32 bit ARM Microcontroller
  • 2 x 3.8 mm² footprint
  • Bosch Sensortec Sensor Data Fusion with fast magnetic calibration (optimally integrated & tuned)

Solution provided functionality

  • Windows 8.1 compatible
  • High accuracy quaternion: 2-3 deg (static)
  • Low latency: 20 ms
  • Low calibration time: 2-3 s
  • Immune to magnetic distortions
  • Power consumption advantages through integration

What makes the difference?

  • Hardware and software co-design enables high performance with low power consumption
  • Quaternion communication is 10x more efficient than raw data
  • Integrated sensor fusion software reduces customer development costs and time
  • All components in one package leads to simplified system integration and faster time to market
  • Footprint is significantly reduced compared to discrete and system on board solutions

BNO055 FAQ

What is in an IMU?

Inertial measurement unit (IMU) The IMU is a sensor that measures triaxial acceleration and triaxial angular velocity. The IMU consists of an accelerometer, which can output linear acceleration signals on three axes in space, and a gyroscope, which can output angular velocity signals on three axes in space.

What three components are in an IMU?

An IMU is a specific type of sensor that measures angular rate, force and sometimes magnetic field. IMUs are composed of a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope, which would be considered a 6-axis IMU. They can also include an additional 3-axis magnetometer, which would be considered a 9-axis IMU.

How does inertial measurement unit work?

An inertial measurement unit works by detecting linear acceleration using one or more accelerometers and rotational rate using one or more gyroscopes. Typical configurations contain one accelerometer, gyro, and magnetometer per axis for each of the three principal axes: pitch, roll and yaw.

What is the BNO055 equipped with for optimum system integration?

Digital bidirectional I2C and UART interfaces.

What can the I2C interface be programmed to run with?

HID-I2C protocol.
