Product Overview

The 74HC74D is a high speed CMOS D FLIP FLOP fabricated with silicon gate C2MOS technology. It achieves the high speed operation similar to equivalent LSTTL while maintaining the CMOS low power dissipation.

The signal level applied to the D INPUT is transferred to Q OUTPUT during the positive going transition of the CLOCK pulse. CLEAR and PRESET are independent of the CLOCK and are accomplished by setting the appropriate input to an "L" level.

All inputs are equipped with protection circuits against static discharge or transient excess voltage.

In this video we continue looking at the 7400 logic family: the 74HC74N a dual d-type flip-flop. This type of flip-flop is a latching flip-flop, the output only changes when the chip receives a clock pulse. So in a way it can be thought of as a 1-bit memory.

74HC74 FAQ

How does a 74HC74 work?

The SN74HC74 (7474) integrated circuit provides two independent D-type flip flops in a single package. The flip flop is triggered on the positive edge of a clock pulse. At the moment the clock pin (CLK) goes high, the state of the data pin (D) is captured and held as the output (Q).

How does an RS flip flop work?

RS flip flops find uses in many applications in logic or digital electronic circuitry. They provide a simple switching function whereby a pulse on one input line of the flip flop sets the circuit in one state. Further pulses on this line have no effect until the R-S flip flop is reset.

What is difference between latch and flip flop?

The major difference between flip-flop and latch is that the flip-flop is an edge-triggered type of memory circuit while the latch is a level-triggered type. It means that the output of a latch changes whenever the input changes.

What is clock in flip-flop?

A clock pulse is a time varying voltage signal applied to control the operation (triggering) of a flip flop. For example, if a clock pulse is of frequency 1 Hz, the voltage it will supply will oscillate between X Volts and Y Volts(X and Y are any dc voltages), and this change occurs every half second.

What is the difference between SR latch and SR flip-flop?

The basic difference between a latch and a flip-flop is a gating or clocking mechanism. A flip flop, on the other hand, is synchronous and is also known as gated or clocked SR latch. In this circuit diagram, the output is changed (i.e. the stored data is changed) only when you give an active clock signal.
