Understanding Feed Through Capacitors: An Essential Component in Noise Suppression

What Are Feed Through Capacitors?Feed-through capacitors are specialized passive components designed to filter noise in electronic circuits. Unlike standard capacitors that are connected in parallel or series, feed-through capacitors are integrated directly into the circuit pathway, allowing the signal to “feed through” the capacitor. This unique design enables them to effectively block high-frequency noise while allowing the desired signal to pass with minimal attenuation.Key features of feed-through capacitors include:High-Frequency Noise Suppression: Effective in filtering electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the GHz range.Low Insertion Loss: Ensures minimal signal degradation.Broad Application Range: Suitable for various uses, including power supplies, signal lines, and grounding applications. How Do Feed Through Capacitors Work?At its core, a feed-through capacitor provides a low-impedance path for high-frequency noise to ground, effectively preventing that noise from spreading through the circuit. This function is crucial in environments with strict electromagnetic interference (EMI) requirements, such as telecommunications, aerospace, and automotive electronics. When installed, the feed-through capacitor is typically mounted through a bulkhead or onto a circuit board, establishing a direct path for the signal. It acts as a bypass, directing unwanted high-frequency noise to ground. The effectiveness of this noise suppression relies on several factors, including the capacitance value, the capacitor's physical design, and the quality of the installation. Applications of Feed-Through CapacitorsFeed-through capacitors are crucial in various applications where noise suppression is essential. Here are some common uses:Power Supply Lines: Power supplies can generate significant electromagnetic interference (EMI). Feed-through capacitors filter out this noise to protect sensitive downstream components.Signal Lines: In high-speed data transmission, these capacitors help maintain signal integrity by filtering out high-frequency noise that could distort the signal.RF and Microwave Circuits: For radio frequency (RF) and microwave applications, where signal purity is vital, feed-through capacitors prevent interference effectively.Aerospace and Defense: Given the demanding noise suppression standards in aerospace, these capacitors are used in avionics and communication systems to ensure reliable operation under extreme conditions. Choosing the Right Feed-Through CapacitorSelecting the right feed-through capacitor for a specific application involves several considerations:Capacitance Value: This determines the frequency range over which the capacitor is effective. Higher capacitance values are generally better for lower frequencies, while lower values excel at filtering high-frequency noise.Voltage Rating: The capacitor’s voltage rating must be adequate to handle the maximum circuit voltage without failure.Insertion Loss: This metric indicates how much the signal is attenuated as it passes through the capacitor. Low insertion loss is crucial for applications prioritizing signal integrity.Physical Size and Mounting Configuration: The capacitor's size and shape should fit the circuit layout, especially in compact spaces like modern PCBs. Installation Best PracticesTo achieve optimal noise suppression, proper installation of feed-through capacitors is essential. Here are some best practices:Ensure Proper Grounding: The effectiveness of a feed-through capacitor hinges on its connection to ground. A low-impedance ground path is vital for maximizing noise suppression.Minimize Lead Lengths: Long leads can introduce inductance, reducing the capacitor's ability to filter high-frequency noise. Short, direct connections are preferable.Avoid Crosstalk: In multi-line setups, care must be taken to prevent crosstalk between adjacent lines. Shielding or spacing the capacitors can help mitigate this issue. Advantages of Feed-Through CapacitorsFeed-through capacitors offer several benefits over traditional EMI filtering methods:High Efficiency: By integrating directly into the signal path, they provide efficient noise suppression with minimal impact on the desired signal.Compact Design: Their ability to be mounted through bulkheads or circuit boards makes them ideal for space-sensitive applications.Versatility: These capacitors are effective in a wide range of scenarios, from low-frequency power lines to high-frequency RF circuits.Improved Signal Integrity: By filtering out unwanted noise, they help maintain the integrity of high-speed signals, which is crucial in modern digital and RF systems. Challenges and ConsiderationsWhile feed-through capacitors are highly effective, some challenges and considerations must be kept in mind:Cost: High-performance feed-through capacitors can be more expensive than standard options, especially in applications requiring custom specifications.Thermal Management: In high-power applications, these capacitors can generate heat, which needs to be managed to avoid damage.Environmental Factors: Harsh conditions, such as extreme temperatures or humidity, can impact performance and lifespan. It's important to choose capacitors rated for specific operating environments. Future Trends in Feed-Through CapacitorsAs electronic devices grow more sophisticated, the demand for effective EMI suppression solutions like feed-through capacitors is likely to increase. Future trends include:Miniaturization: As components become smaller, there will be a need for compact feed-through capacitors that effectively suppress noise without taking up valuable PCB space.High-Frequency Performance: With the rise of 5G and other high-frequency applications, capacitors with enhanced high-frequency performance will be in greater demand.Advanced Materials: Research into new dielectric materials could lead to capacitors with higher capacitance values, better temperature stability, and lower insertion loss.Integration with Other Components: Combining feed-through capacitors with inductors and resistors may result in more efficient and compact EMI suppression solutions. ConclusionFeed-through capacitors play a vital role in ensuring the reliability and performance of modern electronic systems. Understanding Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Resettable Fuses: A Comprehensive Guide

IntroductionIn the world of electrical safety and circuit protection, PCT resettable fuses have gained attention as the primary support for a complete set of safety features that protect electronic devices from the damages caused by overcurrent and short circuit conditions. Innovative self-repairing devices that caused a stir in the market and became the trend in consumer electronics and auto driving are among the examples of such applications. This guide covers PTC resettable fuses from A to Z, explaining their derivate purpose, capabilities, areas of application, and physical characteristics, aiding with knowledge on the subject by professionals and hobbyists. Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Resettable FusesThe Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) fuse is a resettable fuse for overcurrent fault protection that instantly resets after a fault condition occurs and is cleared. In contrast to a standard fuse that will be discarded after being used to break a circuit, the PTC fuse is in the normal state and can be used again. The electric fuse unites this specific property into its unique performance principle. This PTC thermistor means that the more heat the fuse is exposed to, the higher its resistance, and so does the capacity of the current flow limit in the case of an overcurrent. Types of Resettable FusesThere are two main types of resettable fuses: such as radial and surface mount leads. Each type has its unique characteristics and applications:Radial Leaded: These PTC parts are recommended for a hole drilled through which they are installed on a printed circuit board (PCB). They are found in the power supplies, chargers, and a lot of electronics products.Surface Mount: Surface mount resettable fuses are built for automatic assembly on the printed circuit board (PCB) through surface mount technology (SMT). They are small in size and can provide maximum current condition. The surface mount PTC units are commonly seen in high-density electronic applications, like smartphones and tablets. How Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Resettable Fuses WorkThe core operation principle of a PTC fuse is based on the PTC thermistor material, consisting of a polymer or ceramic blend. In a normal state of operation, the fuse is characterized by low resistance in a way that will not interrupt the passing of current through the circuit. However, in case of an overcurrent or short circuit, the thermistor's resistance suddenly increases due to the generated heat. This rise of the resistance is sufficient to reduce the currents to safe levels so that this activity will not harm circuitry devices. Undoing the fault, the machine gets a hold, and thus, the resistance falls back to a level position, most probably allowing the normal flow of current to pass. What are the Specifications of a Resettable Fuse? Holding Current:the most amount of electricity flow the non-resettable fuse can handle and operating modes – from a low resistance state (during regular operation) to a high resistance state (after the maximum current has caused it to trip). The purpose of a fuse is that it holds a current higher than the maximum amount of electricity in a circuit, so it doesn’t trip during regular operation. Trip Current:the level of fullness that the fuse will burst, and then the circuit will be closed. They have high instantaneous currents that engage magnetic circuits, which jump in response to overcurrent conditions. The flow of the trip is usually more significant than the retentive force provided by the contact wires. Rated Voltage:the specified highest surgeable rating that a given fuse can tolerate before breakdown. The fuse voltage rating and the voltage being used must be the same, or the circuit voltage must be lower than the fuse voltage rating. Maximum Current:the maximum amount of electricity that will pass through a fuse, which limits the current to a certain level to avoid hazards. The rated maximum current is usually specified by thermistor manufacturers, taking into consideration the size, composition, and design of the thermistor developed. Max Time to Trip (MTT):the longest possible time it takes between the minimum and maximum of fast transition (a rapid switch from low-resistance state to high-resistance state) when an abnormal current appears. The trip time of the PPTC unit is defined as the duration from the initiation of a fault current till the device gets tripped. It depends on the degree and duration (details) of the fault current flowing and also on ambient temperature. Typical Power:the average amount of power usually could have been produced by a fuse when it tripped in steady air condition with an ambient temperature of 23°C. Advantages of Using Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Resettable FusesThe self-recovering feature of PTC fuses offers multiple advantages: Cost Efficiency:No more replacing the so-called equipment after a fault, less maintenance work will be done, and the times of downtime will be lessened as well. Enhanced Safety:Incorporates insulation reliable in noble protection of overcurrents and short circuits, enhancing electronic safety. Design Flexibility:PTC fuses are highly adjustable with multiple sizes and ratings, and this PTC fuse type can accommodate many applications. Ease of Use:It saves components in the design of the protective circuit as less number of components are required for overcurrent protection. Applications of Right Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Resettable FusePTC resettable fuses are versatile and find applications in multiple fields: Consumer Electronics:Used for current control in charging smartphones, laptops, and battery packs to avoid overcharging or circuit damage. Automotive Electronics:This feature prevents electrical overloads in the vehicle's electronic systems, including audio, lighting, and control units. Telecommunications:Ensure that the communication devices and infrastructure are functional by preventing the overcurrent assisting the damage. Industrial Automation:Prevents electrical faults from damaging industrial equipment and control systems and improves operational performance. Selecting the Right Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Resettable FuseChoosing the appropriate PTC fuse involves considering several factors: Rated Current: Current flowing through the device that the device is able to withstand before it becomes unstable. Therefore, it must be equal to or higher than the nominal working current of the circuit.Trip Current:The operating current that governs the transition of the device from a low-resistance state to a high-resistance state is the critical factor for the operation. It should be higher than the maximum average operating current but lower than the maximum working standard, which would be tiresome on the appliance.Voltage Rating:The maximum working voltage of the device should be given. Make sure you choose a resistor that offers the same or even higher DC voltage than your circuit's operating voltage.Time to Trip:The time the device takes to terminate the overcurrent condition. The time taken for this process of the device is called the time of limitation. It should be compliant and pass safety standards.Form Factor: Regarding the actual size and shape of the fuse, it would be required to verify if they would correspond with the boundaries of the demanded application. Installation and MaintenanceWhile PTC resettable fuses were built to assure longevity and reliability, proper installations should be deemed necessary to ensure they perform better. The installation algorithm should be used in compliance with the given supplier guidelines, including sun orientation and air gaps, to avoid overheating. Regular analysis of the elements can help anticipate the possible ones before they cause the circuits to fail up to date with the protection of your electronic system. ConclusionResettable PTC fuses are a considerable step forward in circuit protection technology. It is indeed a combination of safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Besides providing continuous protection of the grid, their auto-healing nature lessens both maintenance workload and cost thrust. Knowing how to use them, their advantages, and selection criteria, designers and engineers can integrate these devices among a variety of applications, from consumer electronics to automotive systems, and increase the safety and reliability of electronic gadgets.

New Temperature Sensor Could Extend the Battery Life of Wearable or Implantable Devices

Electrical engineers at the University of California San Diego have developed a temperature sensor that runs on only 113 picowatts of power -- 628 times lower power than the state of the art and about 10 billion times smaller than a watt. This near-zero-power temperature sensor could extend the battery life of wearable or implantable devices that monitor body temperature, smart home monitoring systems, Internet of Things devices and environmental monitoring systems.   The technology could also enable a new class of devices that can be powered by harvesting energy from low-power sources, such as the body or the surrounding environment, researchers said. The work was published in Scientific Reports on June 30.   "Our vision is to make wearable devices that are so unobtrusive, so invisible that users are virtually unaware that they're wearing their wearables, making them 'unawearables.' Our new near-zero-power technology could one day eliminate the need to ever change or recharge a battery," said Patrick Mercier, an electrical engineering professor at UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and the study's senior author.   "We're building systems that have such low power requirements that they could potentially run for years on just a tiny battery," said Hui Wang, an electrical engineering Ph.D. student in Mercier's lab and the first author of the study.   Building ultra-low power, miniaturized electronic devices is the theme of Mercier's Energy-Efficient Microsystems lab at UC San Diego. Mercier also serves as co-director for the Center for Wearable Sensors at UC San Diego. A big part of his group's work focuses on boosting energy efficiencies of individual parts of an integrated circuit in order to reduce the power requirement of the system as a whole.   One example is the temperature sensor found in healthcare devices or smart thermostats. While the power requirement of state-of-the-art temperature sensors has been reduced to as low as tens of nanowatts, the one developed by Mercier's group runs on just 113 picowatts -- 628 times lower power.   Minimizing power   Their new approach involves minimizing power in two domains: the current source and the conversion of temperature to a digital readout.   Researchers built an ultra-low power current source using what are called "gate leakage" transistors -- transistors in which tiny levels of current leak through the electronic barrier, or the gate. Transistors typically have a gate that can turn on and off the flow of electrons. But as the size of modern transistors continues to shrink, the gate material becomes so thin that it can no longer block electrons from leaking through -- a phenomenon known as the quantum tunneling effect.   Gate leakage is considered problematic in systems such as microprocessors or precision analog circuits. Here, researchers are taking advantage of it -- they're using these minuscule levels of electron flow to power the circuit.   "Many researchers are trying to get rid of leakage current, but we are exploiting it to build an ultra-low power current source," Hui said.   Using these current sources, researchers developed a less power-hungry way to digitize temperature. This process normally requires passing current through a resistor -- its resistance changes with temperature -- then measuring the resulting voltage, and then converting that voltage to its corresponding temperature using a high power analog to digital converter.   Instead of this conventional process, researchers developed an innovative system to digitize temperature directly and save power. Their system consists of two ultra-low power current sources: one that charges a capacitor in a fixed amount of time regardless of temperature, and one that charges at a rate that varies with temperature -- slower at lower temperatures, faster at higher temperatures.   As the temperature changes, the system adapts so that the temperature-dependent current source charges in the same amount of time as the fixed current source. A built-in digital feedback loop equalizes the charging times by reconnecting the temperature-dependent current source to a capacitor of a different size -- the size of this capacitor is directly proportional to the actual temperature. For example, when the temperature falls, the temperature-dependent current source will charge slower, and the feedback loop compensates by switching to a smaller capacitor, which dictates a particular digital readout.   The temperature sensor is integrated into a small chip measuring 0.15 × 0.15 square millimeters in area. It operates at temperatures ranging from minus 20 C to 40 C. Its performance is fairly comparable to that of the state of the art even at near-zero-power, researchers said. One tradeoff is that the sensor has a response time of approximately one temperature update per second, which is slightly slower than existing temperature sensors. However, this response time is sufficient for devices that operate in the human body, homes and other environments where temperature do not fluctuate rapidly, researchers said.   Moving forward, the team is working to improve the accuracy of the temperature sensor. The team is also optimizing the design so that it can be successfully integrated into commercial devices.     Ref. ADT7410TRZ-REEL DS18B20

Chip-scale sensor detects unprecedentedly small changes in environmental conditions at the nanoscale

Chip scale high precision measurements of physical quantities such as temperature, pressure and refractive index have become common with nanophotonics and nanoplasmonics resonance cavities. As excellent transducers to convert small variations in the local refractive index into measurable spectral shifts, resonance cavities are being used extensively in a variety of disciplines ranging from bio-sensing and pressure gauges to atomic and molecular spectroscopy. Chip-scale microring and microdisk resonators (MRRs) are widely used for these purposes owing to their miniaturized size, relative ease of design and fabrication, high quality factor, and versatility in the optimization of their transfer function. The principle of operation of such resonative sensors is based on monitoring the spectrum dependence of the resonator subject to minute variation in its surrounding (e.g., different types of atoms and molecules, gases, pressure, temperature).  Yet despite several important accomplishments, such optical sensors are still limited in their performances, and their miniaturization is highly challenging. Now, a team from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has demonstrated an on-chip sensor capable of detecting unprecedentedly small frequency changes. The approach consists of two cascaded microring resonators, with one serving as the sensing device and the other playing the role of a reference—thus eliminating environmental and system fluctuations such as temperature and laser frequency."Here we demonstrate a record-high sensing precision on a device with a small footprint that can be integrated with standard CMOS technology, paving the way for even more exciting measurements such as single particle detection and high precision chip scale thermometry," said Prof. Uriel Levy, Director of the Harvey M. Krueger Family Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a faculty member at the Department of Applied Physics in the Rachel and Selim Benin School of Computer Science and Engineering.Among the innovations that made this development possible are chip scale integration of reference measurement, and a servo-loop locking scheme that translates the measured effects from the optical domain to the radio frequency domain. These enabled the researchers to quantify their system capabilities using well-established RF technologies, such as frequency counters, spectrum analyzers, and atomic standards.Reference:TCRT1000GP2S60ITR8307/L24/TR8

Sensor technology could speed up blood test analysis

Researchers at the University of York have developed a sensor that is capable of detecting multiple proteins and enzymes in a small volume of blood, which could significantly speed up diagnostic healthcare processes. Currently tests to detect the presence of infection or disease require a sample of blood from a patient, which is later analysed in a laboratory to detect markers of disease. The presence of particular proteins can give an indication of a health condition and the best course of treatment, but only one type of protein can be identified per sample. If multiple tests are required, as is the case in the suspected presence of cancer cells or resistant infection, the delivery of results can take longer and the costs of testing increases. The team at York, however, have developed a biosensor that combines light and electricity, to detect multiple disease biomarkers in one smaller sample of blood. The technology could make blood tests more comfortable for patients and enable results to be processed quicker.Professor Thomas Krauss, at the University of York's Department of Physics, said: "These sensors can give fast, real time results and at low cost. The length of time and money that it takes laboratory technicians to identify just one protein in a patient sample is a real challenge for the NHS and can result in emotional distress for patients."Not only can this new technology speed the process up, but it can test for a number of proteins and enzymes together in just one sample, increasing the chances of a successful and timely diagnosis."Researchers are now looking to test the new technology in urine samples for urinary tract infections (UTIs), which has a high resistance to antibiotic treatment. If the biosensor can identify biomarkers of the infection and of resistance, it is more likely that the correct course of antibiotic treatment will be prescribed the first time around, rather than on repeat visits, which is often the case with UTIs.Dr Steve Johnson, from the University of York's Department of Electronics, said: "Combining light and electricity in silicon sensors has never been done before. This exciting new technology provides in-depth analysis of biological interactions and new ways of sensing on the micro-scale."The emergence of stratified and personalised medicines – the tailoring of treatments to the biology of the individual – has increased the demands on diagnostic technologies, particularly with healthcare challenges related to anti-microbial resistance.PhD student, Jose Juan Colas, who conducted the research at the University's Department of Physics, added: "This new diagnostic technique could have many applications and really pushes us forward in how we think about developing technologies for the future."By working together across multiple disciplines we have demonstrated a unique technology with the potential to make a real difference to health science, clinical practice, and basic science." The research, supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC), is published in the journal Nature Communications.Reference:KY0-LM50BIM3/NOPBKY45-LM61CIM3XKY45-TMP03FT9Z
