SN6505BDBVT Product Overview

The SN6505BDBVT is a push-pull transformer driver with low noise and low EMI that was created especially for isolated power supply with a tiny form factor. It uses a DC power source ranging from 2.25 V to 5 V to drive low-profile, center-tapped transformers. By slew rate controlling the output switch voltage and using spread spectrum clocking, ultra-low noise and EMI are made possible (SSC). The oscillator and gate drive circuit of the SN6505BDBVT provide the complementary output signals needed to control ground-referenced N-channel power switches. The device has two 1-A Power-MOSFET switches to ensure that it can start up even when under a lot of load. When using several transformer drivers or for precise placement of switcher harmonics, the switching clock can also be given externally. A 1.7 A current limiter, an under-voltage lockout, a thermal shutdown, and break-before-make circuits are some of the internal protection measures. With its huge load capacitors and soft-start feature, the SN6505x avoids significant inrush current during power-up. Whereas SN6505B has a 420 kHz internal oscillator for applications that need higher efficiency and a smaller transformer size, SN6505A has a 160 kHz internal oscillator for applications that need to limit emissions. There is a tiny 6-pin SOT23/DBV package for the SN6505x. The operation of the device is described over a temperature range of -55°C to 125°C.

Pin Number Pin Name Description
1 D1 Open drain output of the first power MOSFETs. Typically connected to the outer terminals of the
center tap transformer. Because large currents flow through these pins, their external traces
should be kept short.
2 VCC This is the device supply pin. It should be bypassed with a 4.7 μF or greater, low ESR capacitor.
When VCC ≤ 2.25 V, an internal undervoltage lockout circuit trips and turns both outputs off.
3 D2 Open drain output of the second power MOSFETs. Typically connected to the outer terminals of
the center tap transformer. Because large currents flow through these pins, their external traces
should be kept short.
4 GND GND is connected to the source of the power MOSFET switches via an internal sense circuit.
Because large currents flow through it, the GND terminals must be connected to a low-inductance
quality ground plane.
5 EN The EN pin turns the device on or off. Grounding or leaving this pin floating disables all internal
circuitry. If unused this pin should be tied directly to VCC.
6 CLK This pin is used to run the device with external clock. Internally it is pulled down to GND. If valid
clock is not detected on this pin, the device shifts automatically to internal clock.
