NE5532 vs TL072

TL072TL072

TL072 is also a very popular op amp, which often used to compare with NE5532, trying to know which one of them is quieter.

 

Well, the NE5532's bipolar transistor inputs draw input current and are not the same as the TL072's JFET inputs, which have no input current. As a result, if the source impedance is extremely low (specified at 20 ohms), the NE5532 is three times quieter.


However, when the source impedance is around 18.5k ohms, they have equal noise levels because the input current noise adds to the NE5532's input voltage noise. The TL072 is quieter when the source impedance is greater than about 18.5k. A NE5532 is frequently seen as a phonograph cartridge, tape head, or microphone preamp with a massive input coupling capacitor that takes nearly forever to charge. The large input cap's low impedance keeps the input current noise to a minimum.

 

The NE5532, which has bipolar transistors on its input, has "popcorn" noise below 30Hz, whereas the TL072 has much less.

 

The NE5532 has back-to-back protection diodes on its inputs that cause many circuits to fail, and it consumes significantly more supply current than a TL072.

NE5532 Application Circuit

This is a novel OCL power amplifier circuit with bootstrap function, and its circuit principle is shown in the attached drawing. It is composed of NE5532 (other operational amplifiers can also be used) and two high-power NPN transistors. BG1/R4/R5/R6/R7 make up the driving stage, and R4/R7 determines the gain of the subsequent stage circuit. BG2/BG3/D1/D2/R8/R9/C7 constitute the output stage.

The characteristic of this circuit is that a certain voltage is applied to the output tube in a static state to make it in a Class A bias state. Such a circuit has low distortion, high power and high efficiency.

How to debug: adjust R6 in static state to make BG3 collector voltage 0.6V.

Some applications require differential signals. The Figure below shows a simple circuit to convert a single-ended input of 2 V to 10 V into differential output of ±8 V on a single 15-V supply. The output range is intentionally limited to maximize linearity. The circuit is composed of two amplifiers. One amplifier acts as a buffer and creates a voltage, VOUT+. The second amplifier inverts the input and adds a reference voltage to generate VOUT– . Both VOUT+ and VOUT– range from 2 V to 10 V. The difference, VDIFF, is the difference between VOUT+ and VOUT–.
