The function of all 5 pins of LM324 step down switching regulator are as follows:

Pin Number

Pin Name

Description

1

VIN

This is the positive input power of the IC switching regulator. There must be a suitable input bypass capacitor on this pin to minimize voltage transients and to supply the switching currents required by the regulator.

2

Output

This pin is an internal switch. The voltage on this pin is switched between approximately (+VIN-VSAT) and approximately -0.5 V, and the duty cycle is VOUT/VIN. In order to minimize coupling with sensitive circuits, the copper area of the PCB connected to this pin must be kept to a minimum.

3

4

Feed Back

5

ON/OFF

Enable pin, should be grounded for normal operation

How to use the LM2596 Regulator

It is quite easy to use LM2596, because it requires very few components. The unregulated voltage is provided to pin 1 (Vin) through the filter capacitor to reduce input noise. The ON/OFF or enable pin (pin 5) should be grounded to enable the IC. If set to high level, IC will enter shutdown mode and prevent leakage current. This function is very useful for saving input power when working on battery. The feedback pin is an important pin for setting the output voltage. It detects the output voltage and adjusts the switching frequency of the internal switch according to the value of the output voltage to provide the required output voltage. Finally, the output voltage is obtained through pin 2 through the LC filter. The complete circuit diagram is shown below, and you can usually find these circuits in the LM2596 DC converter module.

Advantages

The LM2596 series regulator is a monolithic integrated circuit with all the functions of a step-down switching regulator, capable of driving a 3A load through excellent line and load regulation. These devices provide fixed output voltages of 3.3 V, 5 V, and 12 V. These regulators require a minimum number of external components, are easy to use, and have internal frequency compensation and a fixed frequency oscillator.

The LM2596 series operates at a switching frequency of 150 kHz and requires fewer filter components than low-frequency switching regulators. Available in a standard 5-pin TO-220 package with several different lead bend options, and a 5-pin TO-263 surface mount package.

Features

  • 3.3-V, 5-V, 12-V, and adjustable output versions
  • Adjustable version output voltage range: 1.2-V to 37-V ±4% maximum over line and load conditions
  • Available in TO-220 and TO-263 packages
  • 3.0 A output load current
  • Input voltage range up to 40 V
  • Requires only four external components
  • Excellent line and load regulation specifications
  • 150-kHz Fixed-frequency internal oscillator

For high voltage input: HV version can be selected, such as LM2576HVT, LM2576HVS, the highest input voltage can reach 60V;

Heatsink for LM2596

LM2596 has two types of packages: TO-220(T); TO-263(S).

Generally, the LM2596 in the TO-220(T) package needs to be equipped with a heat sink. The size of the heat sink is determined by the input voltage, output voltage, load current and ambient temperature. The higher the ambient temperature, the higher the need for heat dissipation.

The LM2596 in the TO-263(S) package is a surface mount component to be soldered on the PCB board. Copper and PCB board contribute to the heat dissipation of this packaged device, such as freewheeling diodes and inductors.

The copper area on the PCB for soldering this packaged device must be at least 0.4 square inches. More copper area will improve the thermal characteristics, but when it is larger than 6 square inches, the improvement in heat dissipation is very small, so ventilation in the case of use.

FAQ

  • What is lm2596?

The LM2596 series of regulators are monolithic integrated circuits that provide all the active functions for a step-down (buck) switching regulator, capable of driving a 3-A load with excellent line and load regulation.

  • What is the difference between LM2596 and LM2595?

LM2596: The highest output current is 3A, 1PIN-VOUT, 2PIN-VIN;

LM2595: The highest output current is 1A, 1PIN-VIN, 2PIN-VOUT.

  • What is the voltage of each pin of LM2596-12? What is the function of each pin?

Pin 1 is the input terminal, 12V, the normal working voltage range should be 14V~37V under the output condition; pin 2 is the output terminal, here is the high-frequency oscillation output, not DC voltage, so there is no definite voltage; pin 3 is grounded, 0V ; Pin 5 is the enable control terminal, LM2596 works normally when connected to a low level, and no output is turned off when connected to a high level, usually directly grounded; Pin 4 is the feedback control signal input terminal, connected to the middle connection point of the proportional resistor, where the voltage It is proportional to the actual output.

  • Can LM2596 output negative voltage?

LM2596 can output negative voltage.

LM2596 has different application circuits, which can output positive voltage or negative voltage, but it has no boost function, and the absolute value of its output voltage must be less than the absolute value of the input voltage.

  • In the circuit with adjustable output voltage of lm2596, can the output voltage be greater than the input voltage?

The LM2596 switching voltage regulator is a step-down power management monolithic integrated circuit, which can output 3A drive current and has good linearity and load regulation characteristics. The output voltage will not be greater than the input voltage. If the output voltage is greater than the input voltage, it is best to use a step-up power chip. Such as XL6009, VT1050.
