Product Overview

The ULN2001, ULN2002, ULN2003 and ULN 2004 are high-voltage, high-current Darlington arrays each containing seven open collector Darlington pairs with common emitters. Each channel is rated at 500 mA and can withstand peak currents of 600 mA. Suppression diodes are included for inductive load driving and the inputs are pinned opposite the outputs to simplify board layout.

The versions interface to all common logic families: ULN2001 (general purpose, DTL, TTL, PMOS, CMOS); ULN2002 (14 - 25 V PMOS); ULN2003 (5 V TTL, CMOS); ULN2004 (6 - 15 V CMOS, PMOS).

These versatile devices are useful for driving a wide range of loads including solenoids, relay DC motors, LED display filament lamps, thermal printheads and high-power buffers.

The ULN2001A/2002A/2003A and 2004A are supplied in a 16-pin DIP package with a copper leadframe to reduce thermal resistance. They are available also in small outline package (SO-16) as ULN2001D1/2002D1/2003D1/ 2004D1.

ULN2003 is also available in TSSOP16 package, for reduced application space.

ULN2004A Manufacturer

STMicroelectronics is a French-Italian multinational electronics and semiconductors manufacturer headquartered in Plan-les-Ouates near Geneva, Switzerland. The company resulted from the merger of two government-owned semiconductor companies in 1987: "Thomson Semiconducteurs" of France and "SGS Microelettronica" of Italy. It is commonly called "ST", and it is Europe's largest semiconductor chip maker based on revenue. While STMicroelectronics corporate headquarters and the headquarters for EMEA region are based in the Canton of Geneva, the holding company, STMicroelectronics N.V. is incorporated in the Netherlands.

ULN2004A FAQ

What is ULN2004A?

The ULN2002A, ULN2003A and ULN2004A are high voltage, high current Darlington arrays each containing seven open collector common emitter pairs. These devices are capable of driving a wide range of loads including solenoids, relays, DC motors, LED displays, filament lamps, thermal print-heads and high-power buffers.

What is the difference between ULN2003 and ULN2004?

Both the ULN2003 and the ULN2004 can switch a maximum voltage of 50 V, and a current of 500 mA. The main difference between the ULN2003 and the ULN2004 is the value of the resistor between input and base of the darlington transistor.

What is a Darlington array?

The Darlington transistor is a compound structure consisting of two bipolar transistors connected in such a way that the current amplified by the first transistor is amplified further by the second one. Microsemi's integrated Darlington transistors come packaged singly as an array of devices (eight or seven) in an IC.

What does a Darlington pair do?

The Darlington transistor pair is a very useful circuit in many applications. It provides a high level of current gain which can be used in many power applications. Although the Darlington pair has some limitations, it is nevertheless used in many areas, especially where high frequency response in not needed.

What is a Darlington driver?

A Darlington pair is two transistors that act as a single transistor but with a much higher current gain. This mean that a tiny amount of current from a sensor, micro-controller or similar can be used to drive a larger load.
