Description

With LEDs being widely used in automotive applications, simple LED drivers are more and more popular. Compared to discrete solutions, a low-cost monolithic solution lowers system-level component counts and significantly improves current accuracy and reliability.

 

The TPS92611-Q1 device is a simple single-channel high-side LED driver operating from an automotive car battery. It is a simple and elegant solution, with LED diagnostics, to deliver constant current for a single LED string. Its one-fails–all-fail feature is able to work together with other LED drivers, such as the TPS9261x-Q1, TPS9263x-Q1, and TPS9283x-Q1 devices, to address different requirements.

What does the LED driver do?

 
In summary, LED drivers convert higher voltage, alternating current to low voltage, direct current. They also keep the voltage and current flowing through an LED circuit at its rated level. For the aforementioned reasons, every LED light source requires a driver.
 

Is LED driver necessary?

 
Because LEDs require a constant DC of 12v or 24v, LED drivers are required in all LED systems (except those which are specifically developed to be controlled by mains voltage power supplies such as mains voltage tape or LED bulbs).
 

How do I choose an LED driver for my LED?

 
Use an LED driver with at least the same value as your LED(s). The driver must have a higher output power than your LEDs require for extra safety. If the output is equivalent to the LED power requirements, it is running at full power. Running at full power may cause the driver to have a shorter life span.
