How To Use SP3485?

The SP3485 is a member of the 3.3V low-power half-duplex transceiver family that complies with the RS-485 and RS-422 serial protocols' electrical requirements. The SP481, SP483, and SP485 devices from MaxLinear are pin-to-pin compatible with this device. The typical application diagram for the SP3485 is displayed in the image below.

SP3485 Diagram

SP3485 Driver

The SP3485's driver outputs are differential outputs that adhere to RS-485 and RS-422 standards. Without a load, the usual output voltage swing ranges from 0 to 3.3 volts.  The drivers can sustain voltage levels more than 1.5V with a load of 54 across the differential outputs. An active HIGH driver enable control line is present in the SP3485 driver. The differential driver outputs are turned on by setting DE (pin 3) to logic HIGH. The driver outputs will be tri-stated if the DE (pin 3) is logic LOW.

The SP3485 driver can handle speeds of up to 10Mbps. The 250mA ISC maximum limit on the driver output allows the SP3485 to withstand an infinite short circuit over the -7.0V to 12V common mode range without catastrophic damage to the IC.

SP3485 Receiver

The differential inputs of the SP3485 receiver have an input sensitivity of 200 mV. The receiver's input impedance is 12k minimum. The vast -7V to 12V common mode range allows for significant ground potential variances between systems. A fail-safe function included into the receiver ensures that even if the input is left unconnected, the output will always be in the HIGH state. The SP3485's receiver can handle up to 10Mbps of data.

An active LOW enable control line is included on the SP3485 receiver. The differential receiver will be activated by a logic LOW on RE (pin 2). The receiver of the SP3485 is turned off by a logic HIGH on RE (pin 2).

SP3485 Low Power Shutdown Mode

You can start the low-power shutdown mode by making both RE and DE high. The gadgets normally only need 50nA of supply current during shutdown. The part is guaranteed not to reach shutdown if RE is high and DE is low for less than 50 ns. RE and DE can be driven simultaneously. The parts are assured to undergo shutdown if the inputs remain in this state for at least 600 ns.

A low-power shutdown state is not assumed for enable times tPRZH, tPZH, tPRZL, and tPZL. Allowable timings tPRSH, tPSH, tPRSL, and tPSL imply that the components were turned off. Driver and receiver enablement from low-power shutdown mode (tPRSH, tPSH, tPRSL, tPSL) takes longer than it does from driver/receiver-disable mode (tPRZH, tPZH, tPRZL, tPZL).

SP3485 FAQ

What is the SP3485?

The SP3485 is a half-duplex, low-power RS-485 transceiver that operates on 3.3V and fully complies with TIA/EIA-485 standards. Both the driver and the receiver, which are both included in the SP3485, can be independently enabled and disabled. Both the driver and the receiver produce a high-impedance state when both are deactivated. 256 SP3485 transceivers can be connected to the same communication bus thanks to the SP3485's 1/8 load. Up to 12Mbps of error-free data transport is feasible.

How To Use SP3485?

The 3.3V low-power half-duplex transceiver family, which includes the SP3485, complies with the electrical specifications of the RS-485 and RS-422 serial protocols. This device is pin-to-pin compatible with the MaxLinear SP481, SP483, and SP485 devices.

What can the SP3485 be used to?

SP3485 component can be applied to industrial communication, automotive industry, and multi-node communication.

How many pins of SP3485?

8 pins.

A brief introduction of SP3485 Receiver

The SP3485 receiver's differential inputs have input sensitivity of 200 mV. The minimum input impedance of the receiver is 12k. Significant ground potential differences between systems are possible thanks to the broad -7V to 12V common mode range. The receiver has a fail-safe feature that makes sure the output is constantly in the HIGH state even if the input is left disconnected. The SP3485's receiver can process data at speeds of up to 10Mbps.
