LM7805 FAQ

Product Overview

The LM340 and LM7805 Family monolithic 3-terminal positive voltage regulators employ internal current limiting, thermal shutdown and safe-area compensation, making them essentially indestructible. If adequate heat sinking is provided, they can deliver over 1.5-A output current. They are intended as fixed voltage regulators in a wide range of applications including local (on-card) regulation for elimination of noise and distribution problems associated with single-point regulation. In addition to use as fixed voltage regulators, these devices can be used with external components to obtain adjustable output voltages and currents.

Considerable effort was expended to make the entire series of regulators easy to use and minimize the number of external components. It is not necessary to bypass the output, although this does improve transient response. Input bypassing is needed only if the regulator is located far from the filter capacitor of the power supply.

LM7805 is also available in a higher accuracy and better performance version (LM340A).

LM7805 FAQ

What is the advantage of LM7805 linear voltage regulator?

7805 voltage regulator ic does not require any component to balance or saturate their output voltage. The 7805 ic has built-in protection from the high current.

What is positive fixed voltage regulator?

A fixed voltage regulator can be a positive voltage regulator or a negative voltage regulator. A positive voltage regulator provides with constant positive output voltage. All those IC's in the 78XX series are fixed positive voltage regulators.

What is fixed regulator?

A fixed voltage regulator produces a fixed DC output voltage, which is either positive or negative. In other words, some fixed voltage regulators produce positive fixed DC voltage values, while others produce negative fixed DC voltage values.

How does an alternator regulator work?

An alternator regulator supplies current to the rotating part of the alternator. The rotating part is called the rotor, and when current is applied to it it becomes an electromagnet. Its rotation generates an alternating current in the fixed windings of the alternator, called the stator.

How does a Zener voltage regulator works?

Zener diodes are a special kind of diode which permits current to flow in the forward direction. Zener diodes will also allow current to flow in the reverse direction when the voltage is above a certain value. This breakdown voltage is known as the Zener voltage.
