Description

The L6491 is a high voltage device manufactured with the BCD6 “OFF-LINE” technology. It is a single-chip half-bridge gate driver for N-channel power MOSFET or IGBT. The high-side (floating) section is designed to stand a voltage rail up to 600 V. The logic inputs are CMOS/TTL compatible down to 3.3 V for easy interfacing microcontroller/DSP. An integrated comparator is available for fast protection against overcurrent, overtemperature, etc.

FAQ

What does a gate driver do?

A gate driver is a power amplifier that accepts a low power input from a controller IC and produces the appropriate high current gate drive for a power device. It is used when a PWM controller cannot provide the output current required to drive the gate capacitance of the associated power device.

 

Why gate driver is used in MOSFET?

The Gate Driver works under the same principle as the MOSFET transistor. It provides an output current that provides a charge to the semiconductor by a control electrode. It is also simple to drive and has resistive nature for power uses.

 

How do I choose a gate driver?

1.The driver must be able to provide the necessary average output gate current and this must be higher than the calculated value for the selected IGBT module.

2.The maximum peak gate current of the driver must be more than the calculated value for the selected IGBT module.
