What is the difference between cable and wire?
The term "wire and cable" refers to materials used for electric, electrical and related transmission purposes. In a narrow sense, they are divided into wires and cables, and in a broad sense, they are generally referred to as cables. Wire is composed of one or several soft wires, wrapped with a light and soft sheath; cable is composed of one or several insulated wires, wrapped with a tough outer layer of metal or rubber. Cables and wires are generally composed of three components: the core, the insulating sheath and the protective outer skin. Each conductor of a cable can be counted as a strand of wire. This is the most straightforward difference between wire and cable.
